Canny Collar

Has anyone used a Canny Collar? Does anyone know if they work as well as it's claimed? Both Duke and to a lesser extent Carrigan constantly pull on the lead when walking, nothing I've tried so far seems to stop them, Carrigan also attemps to jump at anyone who we meet while out. I've read the manufactures claims for the Canny Collar and if there claims are to be believed then they would be ideal for Duke and Carrigan but are they really that good?

Re: Canny Collar

Not heard of it Rob sorry!! Sasha used to jump up at kids in the playground and still does when she forgets herself.

I use a harness on her and have just trained her in the house that jumping isn't acceptable in a Victoria Stilwell kind of way (Ch 4 It's Me or the Dog??) although I don't look quite the same in my thigh high leather boots!!

I swear by the stones in the bottle trick and still use it if I have to, although it's less often now.

Sorry can't help with the Canny Collar - although I am sure someone on here has heard of it!

Re: Canny Collar

Yep I have heard of it and heard folk claim that it is marvellous - those that have used it. I havent. I used training harnesses to lead train mine. Im assuming that Carrigan is still young? As they mature they stop leaping at people. Katie at 17 months would still want to jump at folk if they stopped to talk to her when out walking. When approaching people I would shorten her leash and make her walk closely to heel and she has caught on really well that its not the done thing to leap on folk. Of course she is still a baby as far as Boxers go so cant expect much from her just yet.

I got my coupler today that I have wanted for ages so that will be fun to see how they walk together closely . Katie always wants to walk beside Rosie - Rosie couldnt care less! Seehow it goes.

Let us know how you get on with the Canny collar.

Helen

Re: Canny Collar

Have you tried a halti Rob????? Works a treat with molly, I also keep a standard collar on at the same time and ensure the lead is attached to both connecting eyes / loops on the collar and halti as she very occasionally has figured out how to slip her nose out of the halti.

I've not heard of these - but wwe do yuse the Halti's with ours.

Did you know that you can get an attachemnet for a couple of pounds Paul that connect the Halti to their own collar to prevent them slipping the lead. they are made by the same people who make the Halti's. It happened to me a couple of times and i always make sure that i use the connecting straps now.

Re: Canny Collar

I've thought about using a Halti, the Canny collar is a similar idea except it's a complete coller with a slip line which fits over the dogs nose and the lead is attached at the back of the head rather than under the neck, from what I understand about it when the dog pulls gentle pressure is applied to the nose rather than pulling the dogs head sideways which is how I believe the Halti works and the way they pull I'm worried they would hurt their necks if I used a Halti.

At the moment we use harnesses when walking them mainly because if I put the lead on their collars they would choke themselves, I did try once with Carrigan, (he had his harness on with a lead attached to it as well), and within a couple of minutes he was coughing and choking, obviously I took the lead off his collar but he was coughing for about five or six minutes.

Carrigan is three years old, well he will be in March, but when I said he jumps at anyone walking by, it is not in a friendly way, if he doesn't like the look of someone he will growl and snarl at them and try to attack them, the trouble is there seems to be very few people he likes the look of!!! Probably something to do with the area we live in lol We are trying hard to move to a different area but not many people seem to want to do a Council exchange to this area of Birmingham, (and I can't blame them either lol), I was working on his aggression to people but when he and Duke started fighting so much I'm afraid it moved down the list a bit.

As for taking two of them together - I wish, at the moment it's three seperate walks, theres only one of me and Elaine or the kids can't handle them because they pull so much, I find Xena is the easiest to walk but with Elaine she seems to forget how to walk and pulls as bad as Duke and Carrigan. I'm hoping that if the Canny collar works then maybe I'll get some assistance walking them, they'll then get longer walks and we might get a lawn back instead of the quagmire we have at the moment lol.

Re: Canny Collar

Hi Paul, the haltis now come with a little strap that attaches everything to the collar.

Rob, the halti just guides their heads rather than applying pressure to the nose, the idea being that your dog cant pull if their head isnt going in the same direction. I use one with Heskey and it works a treat though he often finds himself shoving his bum towards people instead of being able to jump up!

Re: Canny Collar

Hi Amanda, how sad watching rugby on a saturday night!!! You can get Haltis at New Pets or that one next to the Watt coffee shop. Heskey has a size 3 though you might be as well taking Chaos up to try them on (in which case New Pets is probably better) Also better if you can get the padded nose band as they dont rub on short noses! I have a spare non padded one if you want to try one first.

Re: Canny Collar

Hi Rob

I wouldn't worry too much about yours hurting their necks, as already mentioned the Halti does not rely on pressure rather turning the head, thus changing the dogs direction resulting in the dog stopping it's physco pulling behaviour!!!

Plus, if you think about the build of your average boxer they are very substantial and what their is of them tends to be muscle so the chances of them hurting themselves on a halti are probably far less than the damage they do whilst pulling like idiots on a collar - Molly half chokes herself on a normal collar!!!!

Try a Halti, go on, I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

Re: Canny Collar

Me being in Canada I am not sure about this but....I had a hard time with Eddie pulling badley for quite a long time, we ended up getting a collar called "The Gentle Leader" from our vet. Well, it was a miracle!!!!!!!!!! At first Eddie hated it and freaked out trying to get it off, which by the way, they can't slip out of the Gentle Leader. The vet told me that Eddie would not like it at first probably and to just put it on him without the leash and have it on him just in the house for short periods until he got used to it a bit. I put it on him occasionally for 2 days. Then the third day I attached the leash and headed outside...at first he tried to get it off by rubbing the grass with his face!! Then he stood up and just started walking with me! He pulled a bit and realized that it tightened around his nose and that was it!! He walked perfectly from then on! Just from that first day, thats all it took!!!!!
It sounds like my Gentle Leader and your Canny Collar may work in the same way??

Re: Canny Collar

I have heard very good reports about Canny Collars from people who have tried both the halti and the Canny Collar, I haven't tried one myself, but am thinking of getting one for my bull terrier. I have used a halti before but not with a boxer.

Re: Canny Collar

I've found they're not easy to get hold of without ordering online!! Well not around Birmingham anyway. But after contacting the manufacturers, (a UK company based in Cheshire), have been given the details of a fairly local 'dog trainer' who also sells Canny collars, (there are no suppliers in the Birmingham area, after all it's only Englands second largest City lol), so hopefully I'm going to collect one from the dog trainer tomorrow. I'll let you know how well we get on with it.

I've not seen the Gentle Leader so I'm not sure how it works, the Canny Collar has recently been launched in Canada but called the 'Champ Walk Master' and I think it is only being sold through vets and dog trainers.

Re: Canny Collar

We got a Canny Collar yesterday and all I can say is they're fantastic!!!!!

Carrigan was the first to try it and after about five minutes of trying to get the nose loop off stopped fighting it and started walking, no pulling at all, he even ignored people walking past, it was like walking a different dog!!

Duke was less receptive to the idea of having the loop over his nose but once again after getting use to it walked with no pulling at all.

Today neither put up any resistance to it and walked with no problems in fact Xena, who needs a size smaller than the one I've got and was therefore in her harness, was the worst of the three when being walked and she use to be the easiest!!!

I've only used it for two days but my first impressions are that it works really well, I can't compare it to the Halti as I've never actually used one .
