i am a previous boxer owner and have just purchased a new white boxer that i will be picking up at the end of feb.
i have always liked the white boxers. my last dog was a fawn. i am a little concerened about what i have been reading about the deafness in the white boxers. i know that i cant trust 95% of the stuff i read on-line so i have come here for a little help. if the dog is going to be deaf is this something that is found at an early age or can it happen at any time? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!! |

Not all white boxers are deaf but, the likelihood of deafness occuring, is higher in white dogs of any breed, not just boxers (direct quote Caroline sorry!!)
We have a small group of deaf whites on here, but more are "normal". Hearing tests are carried out on most pups at an early stage I believe? Ask your breeder if the pup is being tested and when and just take it from there!

the breeder does do a hearing test on all his dogs. he had one other white pup and he told me that it was deaf. i would not have any problem with a deaf dog. to me all dogs are great. my only worry is that i have three kids with the youngest being four. my fear would only be the dog becoming startled. but like all other boxers he would probably just turn around and start licking them to death. we are looking so forward to having another boxer in the family. my oldest two remember emmitt (boxer) and how much fun he was. they can not understand why we cant bring him home today!! |

Your breeder should know from pups are about 3 weeks old whether the pup is hearing or not. You wont regret getting a white baby. We have a red/white girl and white girl. Helen |

i was in as the unregistered guest yesterday that had these questions. i really appreciate everyones help what a cool website. the new boy is 19 days old now. the kids and i can't wait to get him home. i will speak with the breeder in the next couple of days to see about the hearing but from reading this site i do not think it matters. i do have a lot of trust in the breeder after spending a couple of hours with him and he did say if (Hogan) ?? the name my three daughters picked out, did have a problem that he would not hesitate to let me know. one more small question. living in Florida how much does sunburn need to be a concern and is there a good sunscreen to use. thanks again, troy |

Hi Troy,
 Even in "not so sunny" North East Scotland, we do get some sunny days, and I do put sun block on my Daz's ears and scrotum, these seem to catch the rays and have the least protection. It really is a little problem here, but you have a very different climate. I would treat them as you would kids. Let best judgement prevail. Ah! great picture, brings me back to when Daz was that age. He has no pigment at all, he will need sun block.  |

 Hogan looks so sweet - never seen one quite that young before, bless him. Sunburn is very much a problem for whites I am afraid and you do have to be careful with them. It tends to be their ears etc that suffer the most and a good quality/unperfumed/uncoloured sun lotion should be applied - or, if possible, Hogan kept in during the times when the sun is at its strongest. I do try and keep Sasha in as much as possible during the summer as she hates sun lotion and goes nuts when I come near her with it!! On the plus side - they don't get as hot as a black lab would, but then that means Sasha can lie out all day, whereas my red girl would lie in the shadow of a leaf if she thought she would get some relief!

yeah i have seen alot of boxer pups and had never seen one this young. he was just learning to walk. i felt very good about him as both mother and father were there for me to interact with. he has great looking parents.
i will have to use alot of sunscreen on him as he will be my new fishing buddy. i will take it slow at first to see how he handles it. |

Hi Troy
As per Karens comments, a good quality toddlers / childrens sunscreen / block of at least SPF25 ++ should be fine. Childrens sunblock is usually formulated to be safe for sensitive skin and does not contain perfumes etc. Try on a small area first to ensure that it does not react with Hogans skin, but it should be fine. Most sensitive areas tend to be Nose, ears and the backs of the rear legs where the skin is exposed due to very short hairs. Obvious things to do are provide shade and plenty of water when Hogan is out in the garden. But that said Tasha used to be a nightmare when she was younger as she used to just play in the sun for ages!! I bet you cannot wait to get Hogan home, the pic's are very, very cute. Can't wait to see more pic's of Hogans progress. Kind regards Paul |

Fishing has the hazzard of the water reflecting sunlight, so baby gets an extra dose.
Any hoo, will this be river/fly, beach casting or deep sea. Aberdeen has a history of each type, where/what will you be up to? |

Daz looks great!!
i live in fort myers, Florida on the southwest coast of Florida. peaple do flyfish but i do not. the type of fishing i do is flatsfishing. most fish are caught in less then 3 feet of water. i fish for redfish, snook, trout and tarpon. i do alot of what we call sightfishing. the redfish will have his tail up out of the water as he grubs the bottom for shrimp and crabs and you can quietly pole the boat within casting range and fool them with lures. what a rush!! and boy do they pull. |

u see am not sure if our boxer puppy, Heidi, is deaf or not.... most of the time she wont acknowledge the sounds, and when she is sleeping she is dead to the world! no amount of banging pots will wake her. But when at my mums house, she can hear her dogs, 3 yorkies barking. not sure if this is just selective hearing lol... she gets her injections and first vet visit on friday, so will get him to check it out. not that it would make any difference, i could never let her go for such a silly reason like deafness, besides i already have a pretty disfunctional horse! lol..... can anybody recommend a sure fire way for me to test her hearing?? cheers

 Open the fridge ............ Eat a sweetie ............ Eat a packet of crisps .......... All these are sure fire ways to find out if Heidi has selective hearing!!

When ours was with his brother you wouldn't know he was deaf. It was only when he was alone as they tend to follow other dogs reactions. It also depends what kind of floors you have ,if they move a little bit the dog will feel it and look to where the vibration was.Sometimes we do think ours can hear little bits but the vet said he is stone deaf.. not a problem though

Funny that, our white girlie has selective hearing too, or perhaps it's just the stubborn Boxer streak???
 The same with jumping into the back of the car, one morning she's like a spring lamb, pops in the back with no trouble.....next morning she'll be rooted to the spot, not budging an inch, like someones put a pair of concrete boots on her. I swear sometimes she's laughing at us.  Boxers.....who'd ave um???

lol. well we got wooden flooring in the living room and lino in the kitchen.... but even when we call her through to the other room or tap on her feed bowl, she wont budge. am pretty sure she is deaf but there is always something there that makes u think twice.... so do u think the vet will be able to tell on friday when she goes for the first check up?

To be honest I'm not too sure what the vet can do differently to any tests that you have done yourself. Our breeder told us she could tell by 3 weeks if the pups were deaf or not by watching their ears when they were asleep. She said she would come into the whelping box while they were asleep and she could see their ears twitching if they could hear her. She wouldn't touch them, but the sound of her moving mums feed bowls and stuff would get them stirring.
Saying that, I remember thinking Ray was deaf when we first got him, because he didn't seem to take any notice of us calling him, but it's easy to forget they don't know their name and the new surroundings. So keep this in mind too....... So perhaps see what happens when your moving around when Heidi is asleep. Probably best to do it if she falls asleep on the lino as she can feel the vibration through the wooden floor. She looks a real sweetie, and what a lovely name. Hope all goes well at the vets on Friday.

great thanks. she usually sleeps in her basket in the kitchen, ave just came in and started shouting and making noise, a got nothing lol.... the only thing that usually stirrs her is the draft from the door when u leave it open and she is asleep or when u touch her.... other than that nothing really phases her, she is the most active and lively pup ave known... lol but doesnt make any difference, other than her hearing, which could be fine, she might just be rubber earing me! there is defo nothing else wrong wi her, typical little boxer puppy, eating the plants and biting my feet! if u shout and say 'NO' she just barks at u... like she is laughing lol... cheeky little....
