Tia is in the veterinary hospital.

Yesterday lunchtime Tia had a bad turn. It was not a fit as such that she was thrashing around but she became very dissorientated and one of her eyes was rolling back in her head. She couldn't stand on her own and was dribbling constantly. We managed to get her to lie down on her blanket. She had also lost control of her bladder.

After about 10 minutes she went to sleep and we were hoping that is was a fit and that she would sleep it off. She woke up after a while but had not improved so i called the emergency vet and they said to take her straight in. In the car she was sick and had also lost control of her bowels. It is only about a five minute drive to the vets but she seemed a bit more herself by the time we got there.

They took her straight in and put her on a drip because of the fluids she had lost through the salivating. They told us they would have to keep her in to do tests etc to find out the cause and would give me a call in the evening.

After they did the blood tests they called me and said that everything was normal with regards to her blood and therefore the problem is related to the brain. Which could mean epilepsy but could also be a brain tumour. They are very concerned because her pupils are different sizes which indicates more than epilepsy. She had another fit at the vets and they gave her Diazepam and said that she was now sleeping. They are going to monitor her over the next 48 hours and if she has any more fits they will treat them and see if they can bring them under control with medication. If they cant they will do an MRI scan on Monday to find out what the problem is.

I am so worried about her and i really fear it is a tumour.
I am waiting for the vet to call me again today to let me know how she is doing and whether she has had anymore fits and if so if she has responded to the treatment.

It was so horrible to see her in that way and not be able to do anything for her.

Kirei and Henry were wandering around looking for her last night and this morning i woke up to Kirei crying - she never cries. The house just doesn't feel right with Tia not around. But i know Tia is in the best place and they are now doing all the tests to try to find out what the problem is.

I will let you know what happens once i have heard from the vet again.

Oh my god Caroline how horrific for you all! Sounds absolutely awful, but you are right, she is in the best place now and at least they will be able to get to the bottom of it all.

I will keep my fingers crossed for some positive results for you and send lots of love for a speedy recovery for Tia.

Big kisses for Kirei and Henry too, they must miss her like mad.

Please keep us up-to-date - will be thinking of you.

All fingers crossed in South Wales for you all Caroline!! Sounds awful and poor Tia sounds like she has had a tough time of it.

Sounds like your vets are well equiped and on the ball, lets hope that they have good news and are able to control the fits.

Please let us know how you get on.

God bless and take care of all at your end.

Re: Tia is in the veterinary hospital.

Tia is home with us now. the vets called at about 11.30am and told us that her last fit was around 6pm last night and after that she had a really restful night. They gave us two options. The could either start her on Phenobarbitol today and we could see how she gets on with that or they could arrange an MRI scan immediately to find out the cause of the problem. Whichever we chose she would be able to come home today as she had not had any more fits. We had to wait a couple of hours though before we could collect her.

Three weeks ago we changed Tias pet insurance as Sainsburys wanted to triple her premium to 45.00 per month as she is over 5 years old so we changed to Direct line as they quoted 16.00 per month. This was before she had any problems at all. However because she had some fits within the first two weeks she is now not covered for this problem so we have to pay for everything seperately. ( I will never make that mistake again - in future i will ensure that i allow the insurance to overlap just incase - you just never expect anything to happen).

A scan is going to cost between 1000 and 2000 and as this is not done through our own vets but by referral we will have to pay the full amount immediately. Also the scan may not show up any problems which would therefore indicate epilepsy. I spoke to Brendan about it and we agreed that we would not be able to come up with that amount of money within a week so we have spoken to the vet and he agreed that we should start her on medication immediately and after she has her next set of blood tests in four weeks time look again at whether she needs the scan - depending on if she has any more fits. This will give us more time to get the money together and the vet agreed that if the medication starts working and reduces or stops the fits there will be no need for a scan anyway.

We picked Tia up at 2pm and we couldn't believe the difference - she was like a completely different dog. She looked really miserable as the vet bought her out to us but as soon as she saw us she was jumping all over the place. As Brendan walked her out to the car she was like a young puppy jumping up and skipping along. Kirei and Henry were all over her when we got home and i don't know who was happier - them two or Tia for being home. Brendan and i could not stop grinning ourselves. We were really expecting her to be drowsy and not really much better than she has been lately.

There is still the chance that she could have further seizures as the medication takes approx 2 weeks to build up to the correct levels in the blood and if she does have any more fits we have to take her straight back. If she does have any more fits we are definately going to send her for the scan but are keeping our fingers crossed.

The vets we took her to is part of the same group as our regular vet - The group is called Goddards and have quite a lot of surgeries in and around London - I am not sure about the rest of the country. they have their own lab and are therefore able to analyse the test results themselves rather than sending them off. They are also very friendly and reassuring.

Thank you all for your kind words - Tia is one of our babies and i was in pieces yesterday. After i came off the phone to the vet today it took me a moment before i could tell Brendan what he had said as i was so happy that she was coming home and seemed a lot better. I think we still have a long way to go with this but at least it is good news for now.:roundnround:

Will keep you all informed on her progress.:roundnround: :roundnround: :jump:

Re: Tia is in the veterinary hospital.

Good news about Tia being home - that makes everything easier to deal with immediately.

Lets hope the medication kicks in soon and she doesn't fit in the meantime - they really do sound horrendous and far worse that anything I dealt with with my last girl.

Sounds like a good plan to use the meds and then save up for a scan - how frustrating about the insurance, but it is so easy to do. But like you say, it may negate the need for a scan anyway.

Will be thinking of you - but glad Tia sounds so well improved.

Take care

Re: Tia is in the veterinary hospital.

Tia is back in the hospital again - she was so lively and back to normal when she came home yesterday but overnight she got worse again and started stumbling and crying out. Brendans brother was at our house at the time and he said they are the same symptoms that their boxer displays after a fit - (he was diagnosed with epilepsy about 6 months ago). However Tia was also dribbling constantly - not just the usual boxer dribble - it was streaming from her mouth. I don't think the hot weather is helping. It was 22 degrees Celsius overnight. We have kept a fan on their bed but it doesn't seem to be doing much good.

Brendan was up with her during the night and then when i got up for work this morning we decided that she needed to go back to the vets.

Brendan has just phoned me and told me that they have kept her in again for observation. The stumbling and crying are apparently to be expected until the medication starts working in about 10 - 14 days, however the dribbling is not normal and they are worried about her becoming dehydrated again and may put her back on a drip. Brendan will be phoning them back at 11.30 this morning to see how she is doing so we will just have to wait and see what they say then. I am at work now but i don't think there is much point me being here as all i can think about is Tia.

It is looking like the scan is becoming more urgent now to find out what the problem is. We are going to wait and see what the vet says later today and Brendan and i will have a chat this afternoon about what our options are regarding the scan. Tia is more important than anything else and it looks like we will haver to find the money from somewhere. I just really can't believe our bad luck regarding the insurance. I will let you know what the vet says later.

Re: Tia is in the veterinary hospital.

Tia passed away today just after 11am. She had a cardiac arrest and they were unable to save her.

The vet said it was most likely to have been a widespread brain tumour which would have been untreatable even if we had the scan done straight away. They offered us a post mortem but we said no as she is gone and we would rather leave her to rest in peace. Since Brendan took her in this morning she was very drowsy and she slept almost all of the time she was there.

I still can't believe she has gone. She was only five years old.

We have decided to have her cremated and to scatter her ashes in the field where we walked them. She loved to run around and play in the long grass in that field and like Brendan said she will be getting permanent walkies now!!

This is a picture i took of Tia and Kirei last night - I came down the stairs and Kirei was actually cuddling Tia.

Tia had a really good day with us yesterday - she seemed so happy and was running around and playing. We gave her some steak after her dinner and she had one of her favourite cheese strings. I can't believe that after all that she has now gone. I am so grateful for the day we had yesterday though as it gives us a happy memory of her last time with us. I will never forget the way she was jumping around like a puppy as we brought her home from the vets.

Thank you all so much for your support through this. It has really helped.

Caroline, Brendan , Kirei and Henry xxxx

I am so sorry to hear about Tia - what sad news.

I am very glad though, that the last moments you had with her were happy and that she was happy and bouncy, so good for you to have those happy memories to look back on.

My thoughts are with you and Brendan at this sad time. I like the idea of scattering her ashes on her favourite walk, that way you have somewhere happy to visit her.

Big kisses to Henry and Kirei, they will miss her too.

Big hugs to you all - my last memories will be the photo of the three of them in their kennel. Such a handsome brood together.

Re: Tia is in the veterinary hospital.

Caroline & Brendan, so so sorry to hear your sad news.

As you and others have said it was good that Tia was home with you yesterday - she was with the ones that loved her most and was able to spend quality time having cuddles with you all.

It was also good that you will always remember as you said seeing her jumping around like a puppy. Love the pic, it says it all really, how special are our boxer babies!!!!

Lynnes is crying her eyes out as I ave just showed her the update you posted, she sends all her love as do all of us.

I hope with time all the good memories come flooding back and you will once again smile at the good times you enjoyed with Tia.

Take care all, big hugs from South Wales

Re: Tia is in the veterinary hospital.

I am feeling a bit better today - it was strange this morning though as i got up to go to work. Usually the three of them are all jumping around in front of me as i open the back door to let them out - they were always so close to tripping me up. This morning though as it was only Kirei & Henry they didn't really get in my way at all and i really noticed Tia missing.

Yesterday afternoon Brendan and i went to the garden centre and bought two rose bushes to plant in memory of Tia. We picked them out because of their names. One was called lionheart - Brendan always used to say that Tia was like a little lion prowling around so it suited her perfectly. The other was called joy as she bought so much joy into our lives even though she was only here for a short time.

I said to Brendan yesterday that i think it was all because Tia was too clever and she used up her brain too young - I have never met another dog more clever than her. It's just a shame she couldn't tell us what was wrong.

Kirei definately seems to be missing her she was laying on the floor awake just looking around for ages yesterday and kept wandering to the front door. She is eating her food okay though!!!!! - we just need to keep things as normal as possible for them. When me and Brendan were upset yesterday Henry kept coming up and giving us big kisses and climbed up on the sofa to give us a cuddle - normally he wouldn't do that as he knows he is not allowed on the sofa. So we called Kirei up and all had a big cuddle together.

The picture of the three of them together in their kennel - i am going to get enlarged 2ft x 3ft to put up on the wall in our living room. We had a beautiful one of Brendan with Tia and Kirei before but had never got round to getting one done of the three of them. I think now is definately the time. Brendan was also looking at pictures of them last night and has decided he is definately going to get a tattoo done. He will get Tia done first and then have Kirei and Henry added afterwards.

Tia was a very special girl and although she may be gone from our lives physically she will always be in our hearts.

Caroline, Brenda, Kirei and Henry xxxx

I am so sorry to hear your news, you must all miss her terribly. I lost Jake through epilepsy and know how traumatic it is when everything happens so suddenly. I still miss him very much, and like Tia for you, he will always have a special place with me. As hard as it is, keep thinking of the good times, and know that she isnt suffering.
