House breaking - where am I going wrong?

Hi all,
Roxy has been home for nearly 5 weeks now and is as good as gold (touching a lucky charm as I type) except...

She always has access to the garden, and yet sometimes still pees on the floor inside.

When I catch her I tell her no and put her out, but it seems to be sheer laziness that means she doesn't get up and go out...

Any advice is gratefully received!

Well guessing you got her at 8 weeks would make her about 13 weeks? You will get the odd one that house trains very quick but for the most part you cant really expect very much under 6 months and sometimes more than that. Puppies are like babies. No two puppies will house train the same and no two babies wil be potty trained at the same time.

Its repitition - when she wakens, take her out, when shes eaten, take her out, after playing, take her out. Basically every couple of hours at this age. Now the crucial part is that you MUST stay out with her until she perform. Use a special word or phrase. We use "Wee wees" and when she does it, you make the biggest fuss of her. A puppy does not think "Oh I will just Wee here to be annoying". A puppy thinks, "I gotta go" and nature takes over. Definitely not laziness, she is just too young and just does not understand what you want from her. When you put her out, do you go out with her? If you dont, she wont understand why you are putting her out. Nomatter the weather, you need to stay with her. 13 weeks is no age - she is a very young puppy.

Helen

Hi Helen,

Thank you so much for your advice!
I see that far more effort is required on my part - as I suspected, the problem is with me not her!!!!

I love the fact that you have worked that out so early on in your relationship with your boxer!! So many boxer owners bemoaned their poor pets when it is them that is the root of most of the problems!!

Well done you :cheering:

As for house training - Tizzy was over a year

Good luck and keep up the good work!!:flowers:

Hi my girl dogs took a lot longer to toilet train then our boy jazz he got it really soon yet indie and gracie seem to take awhile to get it, we did as helen said you know letting them out in the morning and after they have eaten and it really does work the girls were around a 1 years old before they really got it and they both now ask when they want to go out, indie sit's by the back door and gracie cries and 9 times out of 10 they do it so they can go out and play or to watch the cats next door:lol:

Hi all,
I would jut like to add to my post that I did what Helen advised once after catching Roxy in the act of weeing inside, and she hasn't done it since!
She has just turned 6 months old, and I cannot remember the last 'accident'!
Yay for my clever baby!!!
