I originally posted this appeal on the boxerworld forums. It got a positive response but unfortunately (for my purposes) it seems that a large portion of their membership is US-based.
I have an appeal to make to all boxer puppies (and their owners, naturally) based in or around London (UK). My girlfriend of 14 years has breast cancer. She is responding well to chemotherapy but the treatment takes its toll, mentally and physically. That's why I'm hoping to arrange for a very special visitor this holiday season. Jan dearly loves boxer dogs. We both do. I had the privilege of owning one when I was younger (see this thread on Boxerworld for stories of Khan, the wonderboxer). And that is why I humbly ask if you would allow your boxer pup to visit our home for a few hours. This would serve as more than just a treat. I know for a fact that good morale is a vital factor in the healing process. This is a critical fight we face and I'm prepared to try anything in order to win it. The company of a boxer pup for a few hours would be a small but significant weapon in that fight (for many weeks afterwards too). If you have a boxer pup who you would like to volunteer for this worthwhile cause, please let me know. I understand that this is a huge ask of anyone. We live in a distrustful age where such requests from strangers are, rightfully, treated with suspicion. I wish I knew how to easily get beyond that and offer you the necessary reassurance this request is not a scam or a ruse but is in fact nothing more than a madcap scheme dreamt up by someone desperate to do what he can for a loved one. It would be the highlight of the holiday for her, I can assure you. And the pup, needless to say, would be treated like a king. Jan doesn't know anything about this mad scheme of mine. The surprise alone would deliver more endorphins into her system than a barrelful of chocolate! For practical reasons I won't go into you would have to deliver the pup to us and pick him/her up at the end of the visit but I imagine that would preferable anyway. If any of you have the slightest interest in helping me make this happen or know of other individuals or organisations or online communities based in London who might be able to help, please let me know or pass on the word with a link to this thread. Thank you all so much. |

So sorry to read About Jan, such a worry for you
I would imagine anyone with a pup would want to stay with it for the duration of the visit. That may be something to think about. Puppies cost a lot of money & most new owners dont like to let their new babes out if their sight for long especially to someone they dont know. You might be better contacting a breed club in your area to see if they could help, they would know breeders with puppies currently who may be able to help you. If you click on link below it will take you to a website with club details for different areas in the uk http://www.ukboxerdogs.co.uk/clubs.html

Sorry, I can't help as I live up in Scotland and both my girls are grown.
Not being funny (any maybe you have specific reasons for it being a puppy) but I would have thought an older, slightly more calmer boxer would be a better idea, rather than a young puppy? Good luck with your mission.

@Katiesnowflake: Unfortunately it really isn't practical. She's extremely self-concious right now (what with the bald head and all). If there was some guarantee I could offer, I would. But I do understand what you're saying, of course I do.
@SashasMum: You know, perhaps you're right. Not that she couldn't handle a pup; she's well used to dogs. I just imagined it would be easier to keep a puppy amused for a few hours in a single room (she has set up camp in the front room) than a fully grown dog. Any opinions on this? |

Again I would contact one of he breed clubs. There will be members who may take their dogs to Care Homes, Hospitals and the like to visit patients + would be calm. There may even be someone in your area who would agree to visit you and Jan not once but weekly which would give her something to look forward to - just an idea....

At Christmas I tried the London & Home Counties Boxer Club via Facebook with no success. They never even got back to me.

I think it would be more practical to have an older boxer around the house than a puppy. It's more like to just be happy to lay and be stroked, rather than trying to keep it amused and out of trouble.
Have you tried Pets as Therapy? This is what they actually do as their charity. They may not be able to guarantee a boxer, but I am sure they would be able to provide four paws of some sorts. The handler would always want to stay with the dog though. I have to agree with Helen, there is no way I would drop my puppy off at a stranger's house to collect it later! It's not something I would be happy to do even with my older dogs, unless I actually knew the people personally. Good luck!

I understand completely. But one can live in hope.

I agree with Karen & Helen, i don't think you will find anyone who would be willing to leave any dog, whether a puppy or adult with anyone they do not know personally.
Pets as Therapy deal with this type of request as part of their work and would be your best hope. ![]() Good luck and i hope you are able to fulfill your mission to make your girlfriend happy - I am so sorry to hear your news.
