Henry has a sore hip

Three weeks ago Henry had pain around his back legs - it wasn't all the time - mainly if he had been laying down for a while and got stiff or if he tried to climb the stairs He would let out a really loud yelp as he moved but then we could prod & poke him and we couldn't find out where the pain was coming from and he wouldn't make a sound so i took him to the vets.

The vet also couldn't find out where the problem was and said he had probably injured himself whilst he was playing and explained that dogs don't have the mentality to rest an injury - we had to stop him running around as much as possible for a week (bit difficult with two other boxers) to give the injury a chance to heal. He also gave him some anti-inflammatory (Rimadyl). The medication lasted for a week and by the end of it he seemed to have no more pain.

He has been fine for the past two weeks - running around playing football, out for walks etc. Last night he was laying on the sofa with me and all of a sudden jumped up and let out an almighty yelp and then for the rest of the evening was yelping as he moved. I ended up crying as i just hate to see any of them in pain.:crying:

Brendan carried him upstairs last night and he slept on the bed with us and i called the vets first thing this morning. I took him in and he was examined again and the vet thinks that it is his hip. He has suggested and MRI scan and blood tests. I explained that we were supposed to be going to Dublin tomorrow morning and he said it was up to us if we still went but his suggestion was to take him back to our regular vet tomorrow morning to arrange the scan and treatment. If we wanted to we could leave it until the end of the week but as in all cases it is best to start the treatment as soon as possible.

What choice do we have:dunno: - Henry has to come first.:blowkisses: I am a bit dissapointed as i was really looking forward to going to Dublin, it was for our wedding anniversary which was two weeks ago, but as i said to Brendan even if we do go we would only spend the whole time worrying about Henry. He would have been well looked after as Brendans brother was coming to stay but i just want to get him started with his treatment. The vet gave him an injection today to stop the pain and he seems a lot better already.

Never mind - I still have the week off work and I am sure all the cuddles i will get from Henry will more than make up for it I will be in boxer heaven - no work and three boxers for cuddles galore :bighug:

I will let you know how he gets on after i take him back to our own vets.:dogwalking:

I'm off for a cuddle
:blowkisses:

Re: Henry has a sore hip

Thanks Karen

Tell your daughter he will be just fine - We are staying home to look after him and he is insured so he will get the best possible treatment. If you looked at him now you wouldn't think there was a thing wrong with him - he is curled up behind me on the computer chair ( almost pushing me off the front of it) snoring away.:jump:

I said to Brendan maybe we could go to Dublin later in the year - we still have Corfu booked for the end of June so we are not exactly short of holidays.

Henry is my special little baby and he comes before anything at all :blowkisses:

I asked the vet what treatment was available for hip problems and he said not to worry as there is almost always something that can be done - probably corrective surgery but until they have done the scan he couldn't really say what they would do.

Will let you know after the vets tomorrow.

Karen

I just took this picture of Henry especially for your daughter. He sends lots of special sloppy boxer kisses.

Look how much room was left for me at the front of the chair!!! - Not a lot!!!! Never mind he keeps my back warm

He is already feeling a lot better from the injection the vet gave him.

Re: Henry has a sore hip

Just called the vets we have got an appointment for 10.45 this morning so fingers crossed it is nothing too serious.

Henry is running round as right as rain this morning - not made a sound. Brendan thinks he knew we were planning to go away and put it all on to keep us home From the moment i contacted the hotel and airline to cancel our bookings yesterday he was fine

At the moment he is fighting with Busta, he woke me up this morning by jumping on the bed - onto my head and then flopped down at the side of me went to sleep and proceeded to push me out of the bed!!

Last time when he was in pain (3 weeks ago) I had been off work for a week and a half with flu and a chest infection - the pain started on the day i went back to work..............maybe he didn't want me to go back.

Either there is something wrong or we have a very clever and very spoilt dog

Re: Henry has a sore hip

Been to the vets this morning - they have taken some blood for tests and he has to go back at 11am tomorrow. They should have results by then. We also have to take a urine sample with us.

If the results are clear then they will keep him in for x-rays tomorrow. So hopefully we will find out some more then.

The vet said when he is walking it is not quite right.

He has had another rimadyl injection so at the moment he seems to be completely pain free.

Will let you know more tomorrow after the blood tests / xrays.

He has been a little sleepy most of the day after his injection but has plenty of energy now - we are supposed to be keeping him calm but its a bit difficult with Busta teasing him:headbangers:

Re: Henry has a sore hip

Sorry couldn't get on last night - Too busy giving Henry cuddles:bighug:

We took Henry back to the vets yesterday. The results of his blood & urine tests came back clear. He has a very slight calcium deficiencey but the vet said it was so slight it would not be affecting him at this point.

So we left him at the vets for x-rays. He had to be an anaesthetised to allow them to get clear x-rays. Called the vets at 3.30pm to see how he was and when we could pick him up and they said he was fine and could we go in at 6.15pm so that we could also see the vet and he could go through the results with us.

The vet was not at all concerned with either of his hips. He said they look perfectly normal and the joints are in very good condition, however there are a couple of points on his spine which look slightly abnormal and he wanted to get a second opinion on. Therefore he was going to drive straight over to their hospital when the surgery finished and take them to a bone specialist there. (I love our vets - they get everything moving so fast). He said his spine may not be the problem at all and that there is no such thing as the perfect spine - it is just a case of whether the bones are positioned correctly for that individual dog. So now we have to wait until the specialist has looked at the x-rays and decided whether those areas could be the problem. If we have not heard from them by the middle of next week we are to call them. In the meantime Henry has painkillers to get him through this week.

At least it is not his hips - that was our main concern with him being so young. If the specialist says the x-rays look ok then the next step is an MRI scan which can be booked immediately. They would then be looking for trapped nerves, problems with the discs between the vertebrae etc.

When we got Henry home last night he was still very confused due to the anaesthetic, so he needed lots of cuddles - he is fine again this morning though - completely back to his old self. Kirei was so sweet looking after him - she spent the whole evening cleaning him and coming over to check that he was okay.

Thank god for insurance - the bill so far comes to just over 750 and we still don't know what the problem is.

Main thing is Henry doesn't seem to be in any pain at the moment due to the painkillers and we should be well on our way to finding out what is causing the problem.

I will keep you all updated as and when we find out more.

Love from Caroline and my babies:blowkisses:

Awww give him loads of cuddles from us :bighug: Sounds like your vet is a supervet Caroline - definitely on your case there isn't he.

Let us know what they say about his spine, but it sounds like they are ruling most things out already.

Could he have banged it playing rough with Buster?

Re: Henry has a sore hip

That is what we originally thought that he had hurt himself whilst playing and when we took him to the vets three weeks ago that is what the vet also said.

It is just strange that it has been fine since then and has suddenly flared up again after two weeks off the medication and no pain - when it started again this time he was fast asleep on the sofa with me and suddenly just shot up yelping in pain??

I really hope it does turn out to be something like that - to look at him now you would not know there is anything wrong with him - he keeps sneaking up on Busta and stealing his toys!!!!

Me and Brendan are off to Paradise wildlife park today to see the meerkats (our day out to make up for our missed trip to Dublin) on the way back i am going to go past our pet warehouse and buy them all some lovely treats. Henry definately deserves some - three days solid of going backwards and forwards to the vets and he is still giving me kisses galore.:blowkisses:

Re: Henry has a sore hip

No news yet.

I have to call the vets tomorrow after work. They will probably ask for us to take Henry back in as his painkillers will have run out by then. Our vet should be able to tell us then if there were any problems with the xrays and if there isn't the next step should be an MRI scan.

To look at Henry now you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with him - he is just as lively and hasn't yelped for a couple of days now.

I am glad he doesn't seem to be in pain at the moment but i just really want to find out what the problem is.

I will keep you updated once i get any news.

Re: Henry has a sore hip

Good news for both Henry & Busta!!!!:toungebounce:

I'll start with Henry - the specialist had a look at his xrays (our vet was concerned about two areas of his spine) One area he said looked fine, the other is a part near the pelvic bone - I can't remember all the names & details but basically there are three bones in the spine that should be fused together. Only two of Henry's are fused - it is something that he would have been born with - not happened through injury. Hopefully it is not something that will ever need operating on.He may never have any more problems with it.:loveya:

There are no signs of arthiritis or hip problems. He has not yelped in pain for three to four days now, he is still on painkillers though but he is completely back to his old self. The vet has given us three weeks of pain killers and he wants us to start cutting them down after to weeks to wean him off of them slowly. he has an appointment at the vets in three weeks to see how things are going. If he does start to get pain again then he will be referred to the specialist but it may be a one off (or twice) incident and may never cause him any further problems:jump:

He has also got a calcium supplement as his calcium levels were slightly low when he had his blood tests.

Now for Busta - after all the things that were going through our heads it seems to have been an allergic reaction!!:cheerleader: We explained all the symptons to the vet and he had a look at his testicals and the swelling had completely gone - Busta was still not himself though. He couldn't actually find anything wrong so he said he was going to put it down as an allergic reaction and gave him an injection and we have to take him back with a urine sample in two days for a check up. By the time we got back home in the car ( a twenty minute drive) that injection had worked a miracle. he is still not back to his old self 100% but he is running around and playing - wagging his tail - play fighting with Henry just like the old Busta:
jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:

We think he may have been bitten around his testicals which caused the swelling.

I am so happy and we have three happy babies again - it's started getting very noisy again now though after all the peace and quiet last night:excited:

:veryexcited:  :veryexcited:  :veryexcited:  :veryexcited:

:jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:

Henry has just been back to the vets after his three weeks were up for another check up.

Good news - The vet went over his xray results and the specialist report again. Also found out today that there is no sign of spondulitus in the area.

He has given him another 6 weeks of Rimadyl 25mg. The maximum dose for a dog of his size is 100mg so he is on a very low dose. We just have to monitor him and make a note of anything that may cause him to yelp.

If he starts to yelp a lot like before then we have to take him back and there is another test they can do on his back legs (not his hips) but he needs to be under anaesthetic again for that. If after that they can find no problem then its an MRI to look for any nerve damage.

The vet is sure that it is nothing serious, he said that the xrays would have shown up any major problems and it is not neurological either - its just a case of finding out the exact problem.

I am really starting to thing that it was Henrys little ploy to stop us from going to Dublin :waa:

When i was in the waiting room a family came in with a staffie. Henry and the staffie had a little sniff and then we got called in. As we came out there was a young boy with them - about 8 or 9. He asked whether he could stroke Henry so i said of course. He kept going on about how soft he was and even when they got called in - I was still paying the bill he kept looking round the door at him. In the end the vet was laughing he said 'would you like to go and say goodbye before i close the door' The boy said 'oh can i' and came running back out to give him another stroke before we left. My little monster gets admirers wherever he goes
