New pup and cat issues---help!!!

Peetie----the new pup is having trouble geting along with my cat. I have had the cat for over a year and he is a very calm mellow cat. I don't even think he know how to use his claws!! Peetie attacks him and the cat just takes it. He bites him and I am afraid he is hurting him. Any advice?

Re: New pup and cat issues---help!!!

None I am afraid - I don't have cats and in the past I have only known my family cats/dogs to get along.

I do know of some people though whose cats live upstairs and the dogs downstairs.

Cats are pretty smart and it will eventually learn just to stay out of Peetie's way. Until then, you can only teach Peetie that this behaviour isn't acceptable. I would recommend distraction - either good or bad. Make a loud noise that he doesn't like when he starts to attack the cat or, distract him with toys until he forgets what he was going to do.

:luck:

I also have a standard poodle, he gets along very well with the cat (they sleep in the same bed!!) Thanks for the advice, we put some change in a coffee can and Peetie does not like it at all. As soon as he hears it he lays down and does not move! Hope he doesnt eat the cat!!! Thanks

We have an upstairs cat and a downstairs dog! They are getting better though....Archie managed to walk across the sitting room and go outside without Heskey getting of the couch and bouncing him last night!

I think if it was annoying the cat too much he/she would soon let the pup know. I would keep a watchful eye though. Girl I work with, her 10-week pup has been in the vets four days now. Cat clawed pups face and tore its cornea. Pup has had to have a big op on its eye. Worst possible scenario is it could lose the eye.

I help out with a local group with stray and feral cats. Im always very careful with the cats that come round. Rosie would bounce at them but Katie would go up to them and older adult cats can lash out. We have one cat at the moment who loves Katie, twines itself round and round under her body and feet. Reaches up and "kisses" her and rubs its head against her cheek. It is taming down for Katie but still very very wary of people. It is as black as she is white!!

When Daz was a pup, he would pester our cat trying to play with it. The cat would pretty soon turn on him and let him have it. Daz stopped that game. The cat is boss, cat will evict Daz from where ever he is sitting and take the warmed seat. They get on very well.

Daz looks sooooo cute with his feline friend:wink:

We initially had a nightmare with our dogs and our new kitten, the kitten hated them, being as big as they were and the poor kitty would sit on the stairs with a baby gate between her and the dogs. Every time she moved the dogs would run after her, now is a completley different story, the kitten comes in and pesters the dogs to play, has formed a really close bond with the pup Ray, follows him round trying to bite his back legs, when he's asleep, the kitten will lick the salty tears from his eyes.ahhhhh

It took about 6 weeks for it all to settle down and for them all to get on, now we have 2 boxers who think they're human and a cat that thinks it's a dog:jump:

Great pic's of Daz!

I'm no help with your current problems with Peetie though I am afraid, our brindle Molly hates cats. As Helen has already said beware clawing from cats, Molly once caught a cat that was in our garden, what the hell it thought it was doing is beyond me - the first I knew about it was the most horrific noise I have ever heard.

MOlly had pinned the cat down and understandbly the cat was not happy and was lashing out like a tazmanian devil. Molly's face was a real mess and she had a nasty cut to the white of her eye. She had to have antibiotic injections for a week plus normal medication in tablet form and regular check ups by the vet.

It all worked out OK in the end but it was very worrying at the time. The cat by the way was shaken and a little bruised but made a full recovery.

Can only echo that you try and reinforce that peeties behaiour is undesirable, however he probably just wants to play.

Regards

Paul

Yes, so true. All species on this earth deserve the same right to draw breath. Any other opinion must be curbed, especially from "domesticated" beings.

Awww bless Daz look at him :blowkisses:

Sasha too has developed a dislike for the furry felines next door. Most of them (4) have learned to the run but unfortunately the kitten hadn't picked up that top tip - he has now though!!!

Sasha guards our bird feeder for us - the birds would much rather have Sasha patrolling our garden than the four cats next door!

We thought we were doing so well, the cat was asleep infront of the fire, the dog was asleep on my knee, when i made the major mistake of nodding off! Needless to say we had one of the Tom and Jerry moments, with fur flying and the dog totally hyperactive.

Our kitten definately rules our house, when Ray's asleep she cleans his ears for him, then has a good old tug on his throat, for a little cat she's sure got a lot of balls!!

Re: New pup and cat issues---help!!!

Got home at lunch today to find next doors cat trapped in our kitchen, being carefully guarded by Mille & Ray, I can imagine the commotion that caused, our poor kitten was hiding behind the sideboard. Intruder cat must have got in through the upstairs window. Said intruder cat was hissing and going, I think intruder cat will not be trespassing in our house again, thanks to Boxer Power!!!
