Back to the vets again

Had Polo back to the vets again, having problems again with his back leg ( see here for what happened last time) after a run on the beach yesterday he's avoided putting any weight on his leg :worried:

It was same vet we saw last time & she said we should maybe think about referring him to a specialist (she did check first to see if he's insured :eek:smile: he's going to have more x-rays tomorrow to see if there's any change from last time, & said these can always be forwarded ahead if we he does need referral. He's got some pain killers to take too.

Fingers crossed :luck:

Linda its just a thought but could it be spondylolysis? Arthritis in the lower back. Rosie has this and it can make them lame and stiff.

Re: Back to the vets again

Helen, you've hit the nail on the head - could have saved me 150 :waa:

They're going to send his xrays off just to double check but are pretty sure this is what it is, in the area where his ribs meet his spine. They said he was quite young at 5 but hey, these things happen and could be a lot worse.

How is Rosie affected, does she take medication all the time, Polo's been given some anti-inflamatories, do you give her anything else like gluosamine?

My parents' dog has arthritis , which at 12 is more expected, & they were told by someone they met while away in their caravan last week that he gives his dog Flexi-joint - he said he'd used it & benefitted, then noticed they did it for dogs too.

Feel guilty posting after Sandy's sad news as this pales in comparison :blushing:

Re: Back to the vets again

Hubby spoke to vets today as they sent Polo's x-rays, along with the ones they took in June, for an expert second opinion. The second opinion has come back saying he has ligament damage in his back left leg, which fits more with the fact he's walking around on three legs. The spondylosis is still there but obviously the ligament damage is more of a problem at the moment :ohwell:

Polo is insured so vets are looking at, subject to agreement of insurance company, referring him to specialists who will operate. They said they can do the operation there but result & recovery will be better at specialists. Hubby spoke to insurers who will send claim form. Will keep you posted :luck:

Re: Back to the vets again

Hey!Don't you feel bad about posting!
I know if my Chloe could have met any of your dogs, she would have loved them all!
We ALL love and care for our "kids" here, you folks are helping me more than you know.
I had Chloe on joint medication, right after she turned 5 or 6 months old.She hurt her leg playing and the vet even had me switch her food,to one for adults. To help build her bones stronger. She had glucosamine and chondroitin tablets and vitamins everyday. It improved,to where she would walk normally, but I massaged her alot,VERY carefully.I also had to be careful, when she would FLY around the yard, that she didn't reinjure it.Once in awhile,it would hurt and bother her,but not often.I would get her pain meds and after awhile,it would get better again.
I so hope your baby's condition will improve and soon!

Re: Back to the vets again

Thanks Sandy, we've spent the last week or so trying to get things sorted, we seemed to get conflicting advice from the vets, specialists & insurance company :nonono:

Finally seem to be getting things sorted thanks to a wonderful veterinary nurse at our vets, who contacted the insurers for us, hopefully we will get the go ahead by Tues pm/Wed am so we can get him booked in at the specialists, it would be great if we can get him booked in during half term when hubby is off with me, but running out of time as we break up next Friday

We are looking at an estimate of 1800-1900 for the op, (thank goodness for insurance - if your pups aren't insured think seriously about it!) he'll probably need to stay at least overnight, if not a couple of nights (specialist is about an hour away) presumably then he'll be in plaster - the worst thing is the nurse warned us that with cruciate ligament problems there's about an 80% chance that the other leg will go the same way within 2 years

I'll keep you all posted

Oh poor Polo

I hope he feels better soon, it must be such a relief to know that hes covered with the pet insurance.

I also have Keasha insured because lets face it we never know whats around the corner.

If the same thing happens to his other leg will he still be insured for it as well?? Im not sure how the pet insurance works.

I hope all goes well

shona x

Re: Back to the vets again

The veterinary nurse said it shouldn't be a problem if his other leg goes as it should be treated as a seperate condition, we'll see :luck: hopefully have confirmation either tomorrow or Wednesday, no doubt will have our premium whacked up at next renewal

Re: Back to the vets again

House seems really quiet :ohwell: hubby & Mad took him this afternoon, they were in with the vet about 40 minutes before they had to leave him, they said he wasn't too happy to stay with the vet :worried: They said the vet was very thorough & explained the different ways they could do the op & what would be the best for Polo.

They will operate sometime tomorrow & ring tomorrow evening, they said not to worry if it got late, we'll then be able to collect him sometime on Friday, hope he won't be too sulky :luck:

Re: Back to the vets again

Vets phoned this morning, hubby said he panicked a bit  but they just wanted to let us know he'd had a good night

Surgeon phoned earlier to say the op had gone really well, he'd done a TTA  something about extending the bone at the front ( a bit whoosh! right over my head :dunno:smile: but he said he was really pleased with how it had gone. He said Polo was just starting to lift his head up but was still really sleepy (nothing new there :wink:smile: but was full of opiates so very woozy.

He said he couldn't see any reason at the moment why he wouldn't be able to come home tomorrow, ward rounds are in the morning when a nurse will ring to let us know & hopefully make an appointment to pick him up. Hopefully this won't be too early, Bill has got the day off but I'm at work till 12 & would love to go with him to pick Polo up (hospital is a bit under an hour away.)

Will keep you posted, don't know if he'll be in plaster or just strapped up. Thanks again for all your good wishes - love the pic & message on the quiz :bighug:

Re: Back to the vets again

Well he's home & still very sleepy, not eaten much yet, except a few treats (he had his painkiller/anti-inflamatory which he had to have with food, he wasn't interested in his food so had to get something down him :ohwell:smile:

The bill is amazing, everything is itemised, including individual screws, from the anaesthetic ppart of the bill it looks like the op took 3 hours

He has to do very little for the next 7 weeks (that's when he goes back for another x-ray & check-up) no climbing stairs or on furniture, max 3x10 minute walks a day, even out in the garden he has to be kept on his lead, but I suppose it'll be worth it in the long run

He has to do very little for the next 7 weeks till he goes back for a follow up x-ray & check up, no climbing stairs or on furniture, max 3 10 minute walks a day, on the lead - even trips out in the garden have to be on the lead, but hopefully it will all be worth it :luck:

Thought you might like a couple of pics

Good luck keeping him still for the next 7 weeks Linda - can't imagine how frustrated he must be. I always laugh at the vet when they say that:doh: - how do you keep a boxer calm??:dunno:

Like you said though - it will be worth it in the end.
