Healing nicely..........but........

Thought I'd start a new thread as the other one was getting rather long :computer:

We were back at the 'hospital' today & after x-rays we were told that they were pleased with the progress and that the x-rays showed good progression of bone healing

Here comes the but................we mentioned that Polo has started lifting his right leg up so they examined that and it looks like the cruciate has ruptured on that side now too, probably all those extra weeks on one back leg waiting for the insurance to get sorted didn't help matters :worried:

They made him a new appointment for 4 weeks to give his first leg a bit extra healing time, but it looks like he'll need the same operation on his other leg now :thud: think we'll need to get back onto the insurance company - methinks our premium will be going up at renewal :nonono:

I suppose we'll get all the ops over in one go & then hopefully get back to normal again - had to laugh as they said over the next 4 weeks to increase his exercise by 5 minutes a week - now considering they told us three 10 minute walks a day that's about an extra 14 seconds per walk :dunno:

Oh no poor Polo!! What a shame for him.

Let us know what happens Linda - at least you'll be prepared for it all this time.

Hope Polo doesn't get too excited about his extra 14 seconds!!!

Oh how disappointing for you all. In one sense you will know what to expect second time round. Poor lad.

Have you any updated photos of the boy?

Just taken this one just now, in his usual sleeping position, you can see how the hair on his leg is growing back nicely

Back to the 'hospital' tomorrow, not sure if they're going to keep him in to do the op on his other leg or give us an appointment to go back again, will let you know :flowerkiss:

They operated on his other leg today, reported that everything went well, they'll phone tomorrow to see when we can pick him up, the house always seems really empty when he's not here

When hubby spoke to the surgeon yesterday he said he thinks Polo holds a world record :cheering: he said usually when a dog ruptures it's cruciate ligament there's only a 50% chance of the other leg going the same way within 18 months, he's never known both legs to be operated on so close together :smash6:

He seems to be doing remarkably well, it's difficult to imagine that this time last week he'd only just had his op  he's so lively & trotting around without any trace of a limp :jump: only if he's been lying down for a while he seems a little stiff.

Us humans are nowhere near as tough :dunno: just a pity we forgot all about his birthday  :blushing: :smash6:

Have you thought of getting a bioflow? Apparently they do them specifically for dogs, cats & horses and are meant to help with pain and stiffness - my daughter uses them on horses and also had one for her GSD and said it made a great improvement to mobility

I hadn't heard of bioflow but Googled & looks interesting, hopefully he'll make a full recovery from his surgery, though we have been told that arthritis is more likely after cruciate rupture so could be worth looking into

we're at the vets tomorrow afternoon so hopefully he'll have some of the staples removed, seems to be healing really well - the only problem is I have to take one of our cats at the same time (sore eye) could be fun, hopefully hubby will finish early & be back in time to give me a hand :luck:

Had to take them both on my own  but Polo was really good while Rusty was being examined

Polo has had all his staples out :cheering: last time it was over 3 weeks after the op his last staple was out - not 10 days, having said that it was the main guy who did the op this time, longer incision but much better job all round, including shaving - last time it looked like he had been hacked to pieces  vet says we should mention this when we go back, but I'd rather just let it lie :blushing:

MMMM! Daz had an Op. on his ear last year. It went bad. The practice said that their Polish intern trainee had done the work. The old man went ballistic, brought the practice to a halt. They will remember us! We will get their best attention now. You really can not just assume they know best! Remind them. It cost nothing, and can save a lot of heart ache.
Lessons learned:- Let the "Silverback" loose on them before any treatment is considered.

Spoke too soon :thud: had a call from hubby yesterday afternoon, I was at my parents' house telling them how well Polo was doing, to say Polo's leg was bleeding & he wasn't walking properly on it.

We got an appointment soon after & they said it looks like an infection so gave an antibiotic injection & we had to go back today. He was a lot brighter this morning & eating again so hopefully he'll be ok, just has a swollen lower leg that wobbles like a jelly :mischief: vet gave him more antibiotics, back on Friday with both dog & cat, they like to see me juggling :smash6:

Well you wouldn't think it was the same leg today, all the 'jelly' seems to have gone as well as the redness around the scar so hopefully it will be alright :luck:

We got the cheque through today from insurance company for his second op  The first one was dealt with direct, this time as the time scale was less we had to pay & then claim back. In the same post was another cheque for his last xray at the 'hospital' - he's insured with Churchill and I must say they have been very good, no quibbles at all & pretty prompt payments :cheering: - dreading the hike at renewal though as we've claimed well over £4k since about October
