Vet Trip

Gixer went to the vet and he has got kennel cough - an injection, antibiotics & tablets all given plus advice on using Benylin.

That's not the worst bit she checked his throad which is swollen and then listened to his heart. The vet then said "you know he has got a slight heart murmour" :worried: I looked at her blankly and she "you do know don't you" and we replied "well we do now"

She said he has what they call a"squeak" and as a Boxer when he is better he has got to go for an ultrasound. Luckily he is insured as apparently it could cost about 800  I don't think it will be serious as he seems quite fit and the vet said luckily he is "perfect" in weight etc I'm a bit worried as this is new territory for me - has anyone else's babies got murmours - i know hearts and boxers are common! I will keep you all posted but have to get over the cough first. At least he seems more settled with the cough now.

Re: Vet Trip

Sorry to hear of Gixer's "squeak", it doesn't seem to have held him back any!!! Shame, poor baby.
Daz had the kennel cough about 3 months ago, it went through our heighbourhood like wildfire. He was looking and sounding very sorry for himself for 5-6 days. A shot from the vet, course of tablets and some junior benylin seen him alright. We kept him away from other dogs for about 4 weeks, 'cause they had almost all had it. It was good to see, everybody in the neighbourhood were quite responsible about treating it, so the local kennel cough epidemic left as quickly as it came.

YEs its really bad here but not everyone is being responsible - the vet said it seemed to have cleared for a couple of weeks and is now back - oh well he seems brighter today. Wll keep all informed about the "squeak"

Re: Vet Trip

Ah poor lad. My first boxer was diagnosed at 9 as having a murmur. She went on to live quite happily on heart pills until she was just under 13 years so dont let it worry you too much. That is very expensive for a scan. Harveys was no where near that. Are they referring him on to somewhere else to get the scan done?

Re: Vet Trip

Yes, they don't do it. There's a hospital in Canterbury - about half an hour away so not far but it does seem expensive. If he wasn't insured we couldn't do it. We want to just to see how bad it is - I don't think it will be too bad but as he does agility I want to know if he should

Re: Vet Trip

Ah well probably taking the referral into account. Vets we go to, can do their own. They have a vet comes in twice a week for that sort of thing. Have you got a date for the scan yet?

Re: Vet Trip

Glad it is nothing more serious than KC. I agree if people were more responsible it wouldn't spread so much. It is airborne so I think they recommend keeping dogs in 2 weeks after they have stopped coughing?

Sorry to hear about his "squeak" hopefully it is only a very mild murmur. It is very common in boxers and we have a lot of them coming in with them. There is a grading system to find out how serious it is. Have a look on the BWS website under health issues.

Good luck!

Re: Vet Trip

Just got back from the vet. She wanted to double check his squeak wasn't just from the KC. Mope it wasn't it is still there. she said she would grade it 2-3 - not sure if the good or not anyine know? Referral going in tomorrow and we will arrange a date for the ultrasound. She thinks he may not need meds now but will in the future but the scan will give a diagnosis then we know what we're dealing with. We have to keep exercising him as he stops when had enough and she said "keep him the dog he is!" As if we have any choice!!!! Gixer doen't know the word gentle.

Re: Vet Trip

He's quite bouncy most of the time. then after he's run around he's been quiet. I have noticed he seems to get tired more quickly but that could be after KC or just me being paranoid. Sometimes he's off his food - always has been funny like that. Saw a poster today that said appetite loss is a sign!! Anyway when he runs around of course he is like a bullet and then he will lie down - not collapse - and then is knackered for the rest of the day. we've been told to keep exercising him as we do to keep him in shape. I found out today that where he is going one of the nurses is the ady who trains him at agility so I know he will be in capable hands.

Re: Vet Trip

Hi all - we had the scan today and it's mixed news. the murmour is nothing to worry about but the vet found something that concerns him - Gixer's right ventricle is larger than it should be which apparently is a sign of heart disease so he has taken some blood to look for a chemical in the blood. If it is there then he has heart disease (i think he said ARVC??) but in the early stages. We won't know for 2 weeks. He told us that even if it is positive it's nothing for immediate worry but he will need monitoring and we will have to watch for the signs of heart disease (loss of energy, coughing, fainting etc). So it's good and bad but we are waiting still. gixer is fine apart from lots of bald spots and we have just got his fur back to loveley condition!!
we were very proud parents because the vet called him handsome and wrote in his notes he is in very athletic condition:biggrin:
On another plus side it wasn't quite as expensive as we were warned which is a bonus!!!
