Gixer's heart

Why is nothing simple? Got Gixer's blood test results back on Thursday. He has an abnormal heart but nothing definite at the moment. The chemical that shows heart disease is "high normal". The vet thinks this is because it has been found in the really early stages so he wants to see Gix in 3 months or before if we have any worries. He may take more blood then and he is also getting a canine heart monitor that we might have to use to get a clearer picture. In the mean time we can carry on as normal. It's really worrying coz i keep noticing every little thing and think it's his heart. We are going to get in touch with the breeder to see if his siblings have any problems

Re: Gixer's heart

:luck: for you Georgie.

I would be surprised if your breeder was willing to give you the information or even knows. If it is an hereditary disease they wont want it on their records. That being said, you may have a wonderfully responsible breeder

Have they said which condition they think it is?

With all the boxers we have had with heart conditions, we got some information put together on the BWS website, don't know if it helps at all.

Heart Issues

We have got a wee girl in just how who has Ventricular tachycardia. Basically she has an enlarged heart and all of a sudden it will start beating faster.

Good luck, let us know how you get on

Re: Gixer's heart

THe vet said the murmour is Aortic Stenosis but nothing to worry about and he thinks the large ventrical is Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC). We have to wait until the 8th June for next trip to vets. I have noticed Gixer seems to tire very quickly now but am not sure if ti is because I know he has a problem. We are keeping a diary of what happens which will hopefully help the vet. I contacted the breeder's mum but he hasn't got in touch with me. I said I wasn't blaming anyone - it's one of things but thought it might be handy for others to know. Will keep you all informed.

Re: Gixer's heart

Thanks Karen - I have just read the articles and am now wvwn more worried!! I know we are in early days with Gixer and nothing is confirmed but the vet agrees he has an abnmormal heart. From the credentials of the vet he knows what he is talking about as he is a cardiac specialist so as he thinks it might be ARVC it probably is but he has to wait for proof. Will let you all know in June!

Re: Gixer's heart

Thought I'd update you on Gix's heart. He is currently sporting a Holter Heart Monitor covered by an Equafleece tankie - which he looks very dapper in!!! (Will try and get a photo!) We went on 8th but the vet was off sick and they had forgotten to let us know - I was not impressed  but they gave Gixer a toy. We went back yesterday and he had the monitor fitted for 24 hrs so we have to go back today. We also have to keep a diary of what he does at certain times. He doesn't really like wearing all this but he's being a very good boy. THe vet told us yesterday he has already noticed irregularities in the heart so it does sound like a positive diagnosis but we just have to wait till we get the results. I spoke to a lady at the vets - (who happened to dislike Boxers but decided Gixer was soooo hansdsome she had to change her mind !!) her border terrier has exactly the same condition but they have known for a while and he is being treated with Atenalol ( a Blood pressure drug for humans) and it has helped so much that there has been no further damage. Hopefully Gix can be treated the same way but I will fill you all in after I get the results.

Poor Gixer, let's hope a positive plan for the future can be gleaned from the results of this technology. Googled the Holter Heart Monitor and found a pic of one on a bulldog(Wikipedia)

Re: Gixer's heart

Well - got the results back today. He is getting abnormal rhythms once every 10 mins approx so it is quite mild. The vet has said it is indicative of ARVC  but exercise etc is not affecting it currently. He has decided to prescribe Gixer a drug - can't remeber what it is called but it is a human drug not the one I said the other day. He only needs half a tablet twice a day that way it can be increased if needed. GIx may have to have the monitor on again in the future to check progress. I am hoping that as it has been caught early the drug will slow the prgress of the disease. We have to go back in 10 days time.

Re: Gixer's heart

Gix has been prescribed Soltalol Hydrochloride (Beta Cardone) which is a beta blocker. will update after next vet trip

Here he is wearing the t shirt that had to protect the monitor. I have ordered one to use for sun protection because of his tumor last year and as a calming/focusing tool.

Just catching up with Gixer's news. How are you feeling about it Georgie? Hopefully the meds will work - do they slow him down at all? I remember feeling like a walking zombie when I was on beta blockers?

Big hugs to you all x

Re: Gixer's heart

He wasn't happy but didn't try to remove the clothes. I think it was more the harness they used to attach the monitor that bothered him. I'm Ok about it, thanks Karen, I trust the specialist he really kows his stuff I have read up about him. As I now know exercise isn't afffecting his heart at the moment I feel alot better. I have stopped reading about ARVC as it scares me too much - we'll take it each stage at a time. At the moment it is early days hopefully the meds will help. Gixer seems ok on the meds only been 24hours but hehas been a bit chilled about 2 hours after the tablet. One thing I noticed today while out weas that his eyes didn't go so pink and bloodshot as usual so that is a bonus!

Re: Gixer's heart

HI all we went for a check up today. The tablets are really helping GIixer he has so much more stamina when out now and his eyes stay white and don't go bloodshot. He has been really quiet though and people have noticed how slow he is. We told the vet and he checked on an ecg and Gixer's heart rate has slowed which the tablet does - but we only want it to regulate his heart beat not slow it so now he has reduced the dose and we go back in 2 weeks.
I spoke to the vet about long term effectsof this disease he said the table should control it however there have been no formal studies BUT the disease usually catches up with the them in the end again he's not certain if is the disease or the tablets but hopefully this will take a long time...

Re: Gixer's heart

Back to the vets yesterday for another checkup. Vet put him back on the holter monitor to check that the tablet effects don't wear off too soon before his next dose. He kept him overnight as he wants to see us today - it was easier than keep going back and forth as this specialist is about 30 mins drive away. Bit strange without GIxer lst night but at least I got the complete half of the bed that's mine!!
Will find out later what the next move is
