my 9 year old boxer has just been diagnosed with a brain tumor

:crying:
my gorgeous baby boy milo who is 9 had a bad seizure last week and we called the vet out,she took him back to the surgery to observe him overnight,he took another seizure a few hours later and went blind for a short time afterwards and a bit aggressive.were were advised to get a full neurological work up on him and an mri scan which we did on emergency appointment that same day.we had a consultation and got an appointment for an mri a few days later and a cfs tap to take fluid for a biopsy.we were sent home with epilepsy medication which has been working and have had no more seizures.we took him back for the mri but later that day we got the dreaded results that he has a brain tumor in the left hand side of his brain and theres nothing they can do.they offered chemo but said it will not make much difference so we are not putting him through it and just want to make the best of the time we have got with him which they said will just be weeks.i am absolutly devastated and heartbroken and just cannot for 1 minute imagine my life without him.i would like to talk with anyone that has went through this with their dog.i really am dreading watching him deterioate and dont think i will bare it,he is my everything.:crying:

Yesterday, my sisters Great Dane Kali aged 5 years, suddenly collapsed and within 4 minutes it was clear that this was the end. Kali, a show champion, daughter and mother of show champions will be sadly missed. The times/memories they could have put in with some advanced warning would have been priceless. Please make the best of time you have.

oh that is so sad :crying:

I have never heard of a dog having a brain tumour before....my dad however died from one 6 years ago at 69 and my great-nephew died from a tumour in the brain at 11 months old.

You are absolutely doing the right thing with the treatment in my opinion, just enjoy the precious time you have left with him, and make sure his last days are his happiest days.

Im not sure about the deteriation in a dog but i do know it was heartbreaking to watch it in my dad and nephew

thankyou all for your reply and kind words,we are just spending the best of the time we have left with milo and taking him out for all his favourite walks and hes loving it.you wouldnt think anything was wrong with him just now if you were to see him which is really sad.he bounds about like a puppy and plays all the time but i know this wont last forever now.he is my baby and i still cant beleive he is not going to be with us for much longer and im dreading the thought of life without him.has anyone else been through the same thing as me with there boxer as in a way im not sure what to expect with his deterioation so any information would be greatly appreciated.the vet did tell us a couple of things but i was so upset at the time i never really took it in.i will give milo a huge big hug from everyone.thankyou xxx:bighug:

I haven't really been throught the same thing.I did know that my Chloe had some fainting type spells, but it was still a shock, with no warning, when she passed suddenly, one day.She had been to our vet,he couldn't detect any problems with herheart. It just stopped, one day.
It's been about 6 months now,and I still miss her everyday.
I can't say it would be easy any way you look at it,but perhaps since you know, you can spend more quality time with your baby.
He will know how very much he is loved as did my Chloe.
I also believe I will see her again someday, when it is my turn to leave this earth.I don't know your beliefs, but it helps me to know that.
I'm so sorry this is happening to you.I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Re: my 9 year old boxer has just been diagnosed with a brain tumor

Tyson is my first boxer and has been a great joy. He is almost 9 and the thought of his being a "senior" dog has been hard enough on me. I cannot imagine life without him and am very over-portective because I need him with me. I got him the day after I graduated high school in the midst of a nasty divorce between my parents. When I thought life was too much (being a stupid, young teenager) it was that dog that kept me going knowing that life had so much more to offer. It's silly but true...that dog has done more for me in his 9 years than any person ever has in my entire life. I am so sorry for your news and will be praying for you. I haven't experienced the loss of a boxer to date but I have experienced the loss of several loved animals. Most recently I lost a cat I had for 19 years. He was given to me by my mother when I was in 2nd grade. I grew up with him by my side, though elementary school all the way through college and even into marraige. We had to make the most difficult decision 2 years ago in March to have him put to sleep. His quality of life was gone and it was very much like caring for an infant in the end. He was a fighter and although I wanted him to go peacefully and naturally, that cat wouldn't have left me for the world. He had got in a fight and was injured many years before that and when I found him all banged up all he wanted to do was kiss my nose. I still cry when I talk about him and still have pictures of him on my night stand, in my office. I have a whole "smokey" picture book. I carried it around with me for a few months and was finally able to put in with the rest of the photo albums. Losing him felt like I lost a piece of myself. I wish I could tell you it gets easier...and maybe it does... but it's been two years and I still think of him daily. Sometimes with lots and lots of smiles and sometimes with a broken heart and tears. You will get through it though and be a stronger person for it. Please keep us posted. I've been realizing that this day may come sooner than later with my older boxer. I can't be fooled into realizing I have another 10 years with him but I wish I did. I hope that I have at least several more years before it's his time to go. I personally believe we will be with our loved pets again in our after-life. God fills our Heaven with all the things we love so why wouldn't they be a part of it? Take comfort in knowing you will see your precious boxer again one day. Please give Milo and hug & kiss from me and my boys.... we are thinking of you all and praying for you in this most difficult time...

Re: my 9 year old boxer has just been diagnosed with a brain tumor

When I was younger we had a Labrador who was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He was only a young dog, just over 3 years of age and to all intents and purposes you wouldn't have known anything was wrong. You need to remember that each case is different and not any two patients will have the same symptoms.

He had been very friendly and outgoing and then became indifferent and not wanting to know anyone. He would take himself off outside and refuse to come indoors whereas before he was always in the house very much part of the family. He would lie for hours in the garage. I have wondered since if he wanted the "cold" of the cement floor. He was my older brother's dog. His personality changed. If he didnt want to do something he would snarl at us. He just was not the same dog. It was horrendous having to part with him. Although I was only a youngster at the time, he was my big "friend". I still feel very sad for him when I think back and can remember him well.

My advice is to take each day as it comes, dogs live in the present so he will relish each and every minute you spend with him anyway.

I too think you made the right decision re the chemo.

Please keep in touch and let us know how your beautiful boy is.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Must be distressing to see him taking seizures when out but if they are anything like epileptic seizures he wont know anything about them anyway which is a consolation, just not nice for us as all we want to do is hug and love them better.

Re: my 9 year old boxer has just been diagnosed with a brain tumor

My last white boxer baby had epilepsy, and though its hard to believe his seizures distressed us far more than they did him. If milo still enjoys his walks, i would keep them going as its something he wants to do. I know its hard but you just need to be there for him and help him enjoy life. We did lose Jake through him having a large seizure, but he would have hated us changing his routine even if we thought it might trigger something. Yes we still miss him, but can now remember all the good things that he brought to our lives, and not the times he was ill - we can laugh about some of the things that he did and his wonderful personality. We now have a big red baby who is totally different in every way but who brings us many moments of hapiness and joy (though we have had our moments!!!!)

My thoughts are with you all.

Re: my 9 year old boxer has just been diagnosed with a brain tumor

I'm so sorry to hear your news I know what it's like to be watching your dog's every move. Our first Boxer, Buster was diagnosed with SPondulosis - not anything like a brain tumour but it was a degenerative disease all the same. we had to watch him go from a big strang powerful boy to a dependent baby. It stopped him from walking properly and it killed the nerves in his spinal cord so he became incontinent. the steroids finally took hold of his kidneys so we madde the awful decision for him that enough was enough. My lasting memory is "the day" when he hadn't got onto our bed for months for his morning cuddle just because he couldn't and that morning he did and had his last cuddles with us - it's like he knew and it was a very treasured moment. To this day I don't know how he managed it. That was about 10 years ago now and we think about him every day - he gave us our love for Boxers. Even now telling his story I get choked but it's OK - remember that. All I can say is let him do the things he loves in the time and pace he can manage even if it's just a short walk he will love it and you will have memories to treasure. Let us know how he gets on. Thinking of you

thankyou and yes milo is still with us,he is still having the odd small seizure every now and again and then they dissapear for a while.he just suddenly starts shaking his head and foaming everywhere and his whle body tenses up.it lasts about 30-40 seconds but he remains standing.his medication has really piled the weight on him and he now weighs about 7 and a half stone.obviously this is slowing him down exercise wise and he really struggles with the heat.other than that he is doing really well thank god and long may it continue.thanks again to everybody xxx:thumbs:
