![]() As I said in the other thread Gixer stayed at the vets last night - we went to pick him up this afternoon. The vet needed to talk to us. the good news..... the beta blocker is doing it's job now and regulating his heart beat nicely so we seem to have the levels right the bad news.... The Cardiomyopathy has worsened. Gixer's heart has got bigger. The vet is quite surprised as it has enlarged so quickly in 5 months. This obviously means Gixer's outlook is very poor. He has prescribed a drug to make Gixer's heart work more efficiently with less effort and we have to go back again in 3 weeks. Needless to say we are gutted I'm struggling even writing this. We have been told to let him live his life to the full and not to stop him from exercise and enjoying himself as he will hate it. On the plus side he's not showing signs of heart failure - yet. We have decided to carry on as normal letting him do his thing- we will know if he needs to take it easy. the vet said he is a fantastic dog who is brilliant to work with. they kept him in reception behind the desk all afternoon! As gix loves life he will continue to do so until he can't really don't know how long - it could be a few years - or more - or less. As you can imagine I disgraced myself and broke down at the vets - everyone was looking at me then Gix burst in to see us looking right as rain I did get some funny looks as he looks completely healthy and there's me blubbing !! ANy wayI'll keep you all updated as we go....

So sorry to hear this bad news. Hope you have a good few years left with him, he sounds like a wonderful character and you have given me a few giggles over the months with his antics, especially at dog training. Keeping you in my thoughts.

so sorry the news wasn't good, hopefully with the right meds he shouldn't deteriorate too quickly. Think it makes us all appreciate & make the most of the time we have with our amazing babies

Many years ago I had a dog who was born with an enlarged heart - we didnt even know about it until he was about 7 years of age.
Devastating for you and I would have been the same at the vets. I will get some healing thoughts sent across to Gixer. Helen xx www.freewebs.com/velvetboxers/ Home of the White Boxer Dog Club

He was given a drug called vetmedin and the vet wanted me to ring him after a few days. When I started giving it to him he just seemed to be sleeping all the time and had hardly any energy. I told the vet this and he asked us to come back in. He was quite concerned because the Vetmedin should've made him perk up a bit. He took bloods to make sure nothing else was wrong with Gixer which thankfully there wasn't. He put him on the ECG machine for 5 mins and found that the irregulasr heartbeat had got worse. We had a chat to agree the plan and what he thought was that maybe the Vetmedin had wiped out the effect of the Beta Blocker as it was such a small dose so now he is back on the original dose that knocked him out before but it seems to be working now.
He's been on this dose for a week now and I have my Boy back (although not sure which version I prefer!! :lol It's great to see him like this I hadn't realised it had been so long that he hadn't been himself. Although he still gets tired after exerting himself it's not as quick and he seems to recover more quickly. We are taking it day by day as we know this won't go on forever but at the moment it's great to see

WE went to the vet on Wednesday (last week) who was pleased with his progress and doesn't want to see us for 3 months unless we need to which is really good. He's not had a goos weekend though and has been really sleepy an dhas no energy. i'm trying not to panic and see how he goes for a few more days and he perked up a bit today. Evenings seem the worst for him. Oh Well we are going to have to take the rough with the smooth.
