Gixer update

Hi Guys sorry not been on for a while I've been really busy then have to wait for Brett to get off Ebay!!

Gixer wasn't doing so well a few weeks ago - I took him to our vet as I didn't want to worry the specialist. He was sleeping all the time and not eating and generally not right. I was trying to convince myself it was down to the hot weather but the vet said it wasn't and suggested I went back to the specialist. Our vet prescribed him "Corvental D" which is a bronchial dilator and he really picked up on it. Once off it he went downhill again.

I went to the specialist and on the night before his appointment he developed a cough well I convinced myself I was going to be told heart failure had started. The vet took one look and said he was keeping him in as he had lost weight and condition - when weighed he had lost just over 1 kg - not a lot but Gix has no body fat so it really shows. His fur looked grey and he was really out of sorts.

I went back later prepared for the news that this was the final stretch to be told the heart disease is progressing (expected!!) but NO sign of heart failure - well I could've kissed the vet!!! - BUT they thought they'd found a worm in his urine  so teemed with the cough thought he might have lung worm - I was so plwased he wasn't going to die on me that I didn't really care and told the vet :jump: Test results showed he had a "fungal compound" which was nothing to worry about but he was given antibiotics and more of the Corvental.

2 weeks later I have my cheeky baby back although he wasn't exercising too well. I told the vet who is happy to keep him on the Corvental as it seems to help Gixer - it means he might have the start of fluid building up on his lungs but the meds help.

We have to go back in 8-12 weeks as the vet worrires about GIxers disease - so currently all is OK with him and he is bouncing and being naughty again as he should be!!

Re: Gixer update

He certainly believes in keeping you "on the edge" doesn't he!

If he does get fluid in the chest cavity it is treatable. My old Bud (boxer x) developed the condition - every 6 weeks like clockwork he would suddenly inflate overnight (the diuretics did not keep it under control), which meant a call to the specialist in the morning, took him in where he had the fluid drained under sedation. Being Bud of course he was looking round for a treat as soon as they withdrew the catheter, and would be home again at lunchtime whereas most dogs would be dopey for the rest of the day. A few times he had to have the fluid drained from inside the pericardium. This went on for over a year and he just bounced through it.

Re: Gixer update

Hi Helen
He's loads better after the antibiotics and now he is staying on the Corvental. the only thing now is that he has more energy when out - he doesn't lay down in the middle of a run but he is knackered when he gets home and sleeps all day. He can only exercise hard for about 10 mins now and not as hard as he used to. We have had to stop agility as he was only lasting 10 mins there too - they finally admitted they asked us to stop as they were worried he was going to start fainting there!
His eyes get very red in the evenings whether he's been exercising or not always a sign things aren't good with his heart - a few weeks ago he had 2 10 min runs un one day adn the next day he didn't move at all.
He is still our cheeky boy and has been quite the naughty boy lately nicking things out of the bin so that is good. He has the cardiologist on 7 Decemebr I'm expecting his tablets to change but we'll see.....

Re: Gixer update

Hi all Gixer has the cardiologist next week - 3 month check up. Things not been too good lately. He can only exercise for about 10 mins then he is sparko for about 24 hours. I don't think they'll tell me he's in heart failure yet but I think his tablets will change. It makes me feel so guilty seeing him like this. He loves to have fun then he lays on the sofa or bed and hardly moves. Today he didn't get up till 2pm. Just aspoke to Brett about it and he reminded me the vet said let him "live his life to the full" I will check next week but it is awful when I know what it does to him.

Re: Gixer update

Went to vets last week and he went back on the heart monitor for 24 hours. 2 bits of good news - he has put on weight he is now 26.10kgs and secondly the monitor showed that the beta blockers are regulating his heart beat so the vet was pleased with this.

He also tested him for underactive Thyroid as there are links with this and heart disease although he feels gixer hasn't got that but it would cancel it out.

He does feel though that the cardiomyopathy is progressing as Gixer has less energy nowadays - he even crashed out on the surgery floor!! so he now has to have in addition to his other meds cod liver oil as the fatty acids slow down heart disease and another med that treats heart failure in dogs. He stressed Gix isn't in heart failure (yet) but introducing it early slows down the disease.

Gix will start taking this in about a week as it's all being sent to my vet so I hope to see a difference in the new year. Then back to the specialist in February.

I hope this doesnt make you more sad Georgie, I am hoping it will give you hope! Kai came into our care in April last year and was due to be PTS for cardiomyopathy. We didn't expect him to last the year due to his condition and yet he is still doing really well now!

He knows his limits and lives his life to the full when he can and rests when he cant. His cardiomyopathy is severe, bless him.

Hugs to Gixer xx

Re: Gixer update

Thanks Karen
It's a sad yet happy story. Gixer also knows his limitations and stops when he needs to. It must be a Boxer thing as a freind who is a vet nurse said most dogs don't do this. It does give me hope and it's lovely to see someone prepared to take on a dog with this condition. Gixer is now on diuretics to help slow the fluid build up. I hope they work. He lives his life to the full and has been out playing in the snow today.
We have been told it will shorten his life. He is 5 in February and I hope I will still be telling tales of him when he's 8!!!
This disease is horrible as Gixer looks so fit yet we know underneath he isn't .
I hope him and Kai continue to cause Boxer trouble for many years!
