What works?

Hello.... :hello:

As a proud new owner of a white boxer puppy, I'm after some advice from those in the know!

I see lots of white boxers with very marked tear staining and am keen to avoid that, if possible. Has anyone any tips about how to
1. stop it happening and
2. how to reduce the staining, as my wee boy (only 12 weeks old) already has some on the white side... he has an brindle eye patch on one eye!

I wipe his eyes, if I see any "sleep" in the corner and he's already good at allowing me to do that carefully...

I asked the vet, who said nowt really works, though she'd heard of cold tea... I also bought something from the pet shop, but am not sure it's making any difference.

Needless to say, he's a very handsome boy!
Looking forward to any advice you can give...

Re: What works?

My boy Brody has the same thing. As did Chloe,my girl that passed 2 years ago.
Myself,I've still not found anything that truly gets rid of,or prevents this,so if you find something that works, let me know, okay?

Re: What works?

I tried using something on keasha when she was a puppy...but because she has deep folds in her face ...the liquid caused an infection so i dont use anything now....i think someone once said it can depend on the food you give them...hers aren't as bad as some i have seen so im not sure..... and because she got quite a few infections in the crease and had to get cream on her face..she now runs a mile when i try and put anything near her face.

I bought Diamond Eyes from the pet shop, so time will tell if it works... I'm just being conscientious about keeping them dry and wiping them several times a day. I did that anyway with my old red boy and he never had any eye problems in his 12 years.

Re: What works?

ive tried the stuff from the petstore....it didnt really do anything. i was told by a pet grooming service id called that it is caused by the iron in the water...so u could always try buying the distilled water from the store....chili has bad tear stains , but i cant afford to buy them water with as much as she drinks, shes a camel with a bladder the size of a pea!

I do clean faces around here, alot.Brody just resigns himself, when I say I'm gonna clean your face.He sits and looks sooo sad.
It's kinda funny, cause he is sooo HAPPY when I'm done.
I always try to keep his face as dry as possible,so it doesn't get nasty.
Hope the new stuff works!

Re: What works?

Your vet is right, the only thing that really works is regular cleaning to be honest. I have been warned against Diamond Eyes as it is quite strong and can do more harm than good.

Sasha used to have them quite badly, but then we changed her on to white fish food (James Wellbeloved Ocean Fish kibble) and that seemed to help - perhaps something to do with with oils in meat? It does seem to be the cheaper foods that cause staining too.

I wipe Sasha's regularly and if they are getting stained, I just put a little bit of sudocream on them as I find that helps with the skin underneath. Once they start, they will take longer to clear because the hair will be stained and you need to wait for the new to grow through.

I would just get some sensitive babywipes and maybe some Aloe vera and just keep doing what you are doing.
