Henry - at the vets for blood tests

Had to take Henry to the vets today - he was due to go back at the end of this month for a check up after his dental work back in November, but noticed late last week that he seems to have lost a lot of weight.
The vet checked his gums and was very happy with them, no regrowth which was good.
When he weighed him though, he has lost 4kg in 3 months and now only weighs 22.7kg. We were given a sample bottle to get a urine sample and the vet took some blood for a full set of blood tests. He also commented when he took the blood that his blood was very very dark, but said that was not really an issue, depends on the animal.

Henry has been fine in himself recently, he has been sleeping a bit more but his appetite has not changed, when he does get up to play he still has just as much energy and when he goes to the toilet there is no real change there.

I just really hope that it is not anything serious - The vet didnt seem too concerned as his gums etc were still nice and pink which hopefully means its not a problem with the liver / kidneys etc.

We should get some results on Wednesday, have to call them Thursday morning if we havent heard anything from them - Glad he is on his way to getting sorted but dreading the results:worried:

Re: Henry - at the vets for blood tests

We got Henry's blood test results back yesterday.

He has very low levels of Albumin in his blood. Albumin is important as it acts as a sponge to keep fluids within the blood and without this the fluids can separate and cause a build up in the abdomen or chest cavity which can be very serious. We do not yet know what has caused this. It could be due to a liver or kidney problem, however our vet did say that looking at the rest of the results, the liver and kidneys do appear to be functioning normally.

Henry is on a course of antibiotics as it could be something as simple as inflammation or a virus. I had to take another urine sample this morning to be sent off for further tests and he is booked back in to the vets for some 'dynamic tests' tomorrow. Where he has to be starved overnight, blood / urine tests taken and then fed and further tests done, results are then compared to see how things change after he has eaten and to see how his body is dealing with the food.

The vet has also requested an ultrasound to do some further tests on the liver and kidneys, to check for things that wouldnot show up in the blood tests. We are just waiting for a call from the veterinary hospital for an appointment to take him in for that - should be within the next week.

Henry seems ok in himself - he is sleeping a little more than normal, but is eating well and still wants to play ball when we go out into the garden - he has just lost so much weight and looks so skinny.

Thank god for pet insurance, including his ultrasound the bill is at around 600 already.........since Monday  and we are still yet to find out what the actual cause is.

Will keep you all updated once we know a bit more:luck:

Re: Henry - at the vets for blood tests

Poor lad. I do hope its just an infection. I know what you mean re cost, Katie had all that done beginning of last year. As i changed insurance companies of course we were not covered (changed because despite being on life cover, insurance we were with wouldnt pay out for contimued conditions anyway). New vets were talking of MRI scans at 1,000 if she wasnt controlled by food.

Its such a worry for you. Give him a big hug from us.

Re: Henry - at the vets for blood tests

Oooh Helen - I have been in that situation before with insurance companies. In my case it was just as i changed insurance companies - With Tia, we were within the first two week period where they wont pay out when she got sick and ended up having to pay the bill - I think it was around 1100 in total!!

I have got the insurance sussed now though, and if i am going to change i do it well in advance, and don't cancel the old one until i am past the first two week period on the new one. We came very close this time - my old insurance with Tesco was due to expire on 07.01.11, but i started my new one with direct line on 17.12.10, had i not done it early there is a possibility that direct line would not have accepted the claim!

A quick update on Henry..........Not much more to tell at the moment, he went back in to the vets on Friday morning for some more tests, we had to remove his food from 9pm the previous evening and the vet took some blood as soon as we arrived, the idea was then to feed him and take some more blood a couple of hours later and then compare the results - except Henry being Henry refused to eat!!!! But the vet said it hadnt been a complete waste of time, he was able to do some other tests whist he was there - so now we have to wait until Monday for the results from those.

His ultrasound is booked for Tuesday evening and from that and the results of all the other tests we are hoping to find out what is causing the problem. He is on a course of antibiotics as well.

He still seems very well in himself, apart from sleeping a little more than normal, we have been in the garden playing ball and he has a massive appetite (obviously as he is losing protein through his urine his body needs more to keep him going) - we have doubled his tinned food and he is going through biscuits like there is no tomorrow!!! Apart from the severe weight loss, it would be really difficult to tell there is anything wrong!

Our vet asked us to closely monitor his water intake over the weekend which has been impossible as they all share the same water bowl. It has been a case of measuring the water out and then measuring what is left back into a jug after he has had a drink, however they all just seem confused as to why i am rushing to their water bowl as soon as one of them has had a drink. The vet asked if there was any possibilty of keeping them in separate rooms for this, but that would just stress them all out. I know in the past when one of them has been sick, i try letting one of them sleep in the bedroom with me, but they always end up one either side of the door trying to get to each other - so that was not really an option!! I have done my best with this, but there have been a couple of occasions where i never got to the bowl in time to remeasure it all and have had to estimate........but it really is impossible with three of them sharing!!

Thanks you everyone for your good wishes - As soon as i know any more i will let you know.

Re: Henry - at the vets for blood tests

Awh poor big boy. We had to do that water measuring with Rosie & you are right its hard with more than one. Its very hard to keep weight on Katie, it worries me as you can see her back bone. Today she had a not so good day, refused her food so tonight i tried her with just the tinned renal food & some wet ordinary food mixed in which she ate but not with a lot of enthusiasm. I will call vet tomorrow & see if they have a case of the renal tins & just try her on that. Her bloods are due again this coming week although i may leave it a week as next Friday is 12 months from dad died.
Is Henry ever sick? Its in his favour i would think the fact his appetite is so good.

Re: Henry - at the vets for blood tests

Thanks everyone for your messages of support.

There is still no change with Henry, he is still okay in himself, bouncing around and a good appetite. He was sick once yesterday morning, which was pretty much all fluid, I mentioned this to the vet yesterday and he said it doesnt sound anything to worry about as long as it was just a one off.

We are taking him for his ultrasound tonight at 7pm and then have an appointment booked with our own vet tomorrow afternoon for the results, so hopefully we will find out a bit more then - just really want to know what is causing it, so that we can start getting it treated!

Back at the vets on Saturday too with Pepsi, for the second part of her injections and her microchip - not long now until we can start taking her out!

I know what you mean about being able to see their backbone Helen - Henry is very skinny at the moment and you can see his and feel all his ribs as you stroke him - hopefully wont be long now though until we can find out the problem and get him back to his old self!!
Positive thinking!!!!!

Will update again once we have been to see the vet tomorrow.

Re: Henry - at the vets for blood tests

Just got back from the vets......Finally got the answers we have been waiting for, but not what we wanted to hear.

There is a mass on his left kidney, they are unable to tell us at this time if it is cancerous, but it looks as if he will have to have his left kidney removed. Our vet has referred us to a specialist at the Royal Veterinary College and booked us an appointment for next wednesday. When we take him in it is likely that they will admit him that day.

I am pleased that we now know what the problem is and can therefore start getting him some treatment, but so worried about the operation and recovery afterwards.

Henry is lying here on the sofa completely oblivious to it all - hopefully a vet free week for us now (apart from Pepsi's injection on Saturday). Both me and Brendan are totally exhausted both from the endless vets visits and continuous worry - looking forward to a relaxing weekend filled with 'Henry time' - and Busta & Pepsi time too.

Re: Henry - at the vets for blood tests

Oh Caroline, that sounds so worrying!

I have never heard of a dog having a kidney removed, so can't even offer any support from experience. My step dad had his removed if that helps?

Poor Henry and poor both of you, you must be exhausted with all the worry.

Give him a huge hug from me and a kiss on his spot and good luck for next Wednesday

Re: Henry - at the vets for blood tests

Thanks Karen

I had never heard of this either, our own vet told us that he had done the same operation on two cats, but that he would not do this on a dog himself as it is a bit more complex and therefore has referred us. I know humans can safely live with just the one kidney and the tests and ultrasound on the other kidney are all looking good .........so:luck:

Henry will be getting so many kisses on his 'kiss me here' spot and this whole weekend is going to be a dedicated Henry weekend:love:

Oh I am sad to hear this news, what a shock for you all. Its good though that they can remove the mass even if they have to remove the kidney to do so.

Lots of positive thoughts and vibes from us and big hugs too.

Re: Henry - at the vets for blood tests

Thanks everyone:thanks:

For those of you who are friends with me on facebook too, i will be uploading a video of Henry playing with Brendan in the garden a couple of days ago - as you can see from this, he still has plenty of energy, so much that he managed to pull the ball off of a 'ball on a rope' toy!!

If it wasnt for his weight loss, it would be really hard to tell there was anything wrong with him.

By the way, the bald patches in his fur are where they had to shave to do the ultrasound........poor thing, good job he is not self conscious!!!!
