Henry - Sadly it is not good news

Just been to pick Henry up from the vets, although they are still waiting for some of his test results to come back, they were able to tell me that the CT scan showed up not only the mass on his kidney, but also that it has spread to his lungs - he has an agressive form of cancer. I still can't quite take it all in.

Fortunately his other kidney is working normally, therefore for now he can continue as he has been, however as the cancer has spread all they can do is to try to delay the inevitable with chemotherapy. By going ahead with the chemotherapy it could prolong his life by several months.

I asked lots of questions about the chemotherapy, as i had read that some owners choose not to do this due to side effects etc, but she was very positive about it and said that for cats and dogs it is very different to humans. They use a very mild form (obviously needs to be strong enough to slow down the growth of the cancer) which most of the time has no side effects, but normally at the most will cause a little vomiting or diarrhoea within the first couple of days afterwards - he would have to go back every 3 weeks for this. There is also another option that sometimes they can prescribe an oral form which is given at home, but needs close monitoring.

She will call us tomorrow with the remainder of the results, and they should also be able to tell us by them which type of cancer it is, not that it is going to change anything. The next step is to make an appointment for next week for him to go back to start the chemotherapy.

I am absolutely gutted - as most of you will know Henry is my baby and we have been through so much with him - we just have to do our best to make the most of the time we have left with him:sad:

So sorry that it's not good news, but hopefully the chemo will help :luck:

So many of us remember Henry being born, that picture of him in a pocket will always stick in my memory, bless him he was so small  He's always been a fighter, just hope his fighting spirit will help in this new battle.

Sending hugs to you all :bighug:

We are devastated to hear this about Henry. Watching him since he was born, grew and develop into quite a character, he feels like part of our family too. Wishing you strength through this.

Re: Henry - Sadly it is not good news

Well thats a very welcome turnaround - just spoken to Henry's specialist and they think that by removing his damaged kidney it could possibly give him up to another 2 years, even though the cancer has already spread - just got to pray there are no problems with his other kidney, but tests so far have not shown anything up!!! Should know more next Tuesday, can't stop smiling

Re: Henry - Sadly it is not good news

Just read all the posts Caroline - I know you were waiting for results - stressful day for both of us yesterday. Sorry to hear the news but glad to see there may be some hope. A friends dog had chemo on a poor prognosis and she is still around over a year on.

Anyway keeping you in my thoughts and big hugs to all
