Henry and his poorly eye...

Hi Nicki that was me you deleted, not to worry - just means i can skive off work for 10 minutes to repost it!!!!

Henry has got a poorly eye at the moment. He had a lump come up underneath his inner eyelid at the end of last week. At first we thought he had just caught his eye on something and said we would give it a couple of days to see if it would go down but it has got bigger and is now very red.

He does not seem to be in any pain from it and it is not really bothering him at all but we are taking him to the vets this afternoon to get it checked out anyway.

It now looks as if it is some kind of cyst or something.

Will let you all know what the vet says when we get back.

Re: Henry and his poorly eye...

Henry has been to the vets now and has got to have an operation on Monday.

The lump is what the call 'cherry eye' never heard of it myself but basically it is a blocked gland - quite common in young growing dogs.

Our vet said the last one he saw was a bulldog that had it in both eyes, it is a very simple operation but there is a chance that it may happen to the other eye too, which would be another operation as they cant prevent it.

Apparently it can be quite common in boxers, like bulldogs they have short faces which it is more likely to occur in.

Anyway we are relieved that it is not more serious and we are going to get him castrated at the same time as it makes sense for him to just have the one anaesthetic.

When we went into the vets the receptionist remembered us from when we took him to their animal hospital when he was a couple of weeks old and she couldn't believe it was the same dog. She said that i was holding him in the palm of my hand last time - this time i was getting dragged along by a giant.

He certainly leaves an impression on everyone he meets!!!!

Poor Henry, he is not going to know what happens on Monday!

I bet he will feel totally sorry for himself and get everyone completely mothering him!

I hope it all goes well for him and that his eye heals up well. I have never heard of cherry eye either, I will have to look it up.

Take care

All the best for Monday - wonder what Henry will make of having the snip? I'm sure he will be fine.

Re: Henry and his poorly eye...

We had decided we were going to get Henry castrated anyway but hadn't exactly thought about it just yet.

We would have to had done something soon as with two girls we wouldn't want any 'accidents'.

When the vet told us he would have to operate to remove the lump it was him that suggested having him castrated at the same time, partly because it would be better for him to have only one anaesthetic - his eye is only a minor operation so he would therefore not get too stressed and secondly because if we were going to get him done anyway we will only have to pay for one anaesthetic - or rather the insurance will pay for the anaesthetic and we will pay for the actual operation. Sounds good to me!!!

His eye actually looks a bit better today - he was given an anti - inflammatory injection yesterday and eye drops to put in three times a day. The redness has gone down a lot although it is still the same size. There is actually a chance that it can go down on its own but our vet told us that nine times out of ten they have to operate to remove it.

Fingers crossed we may be lucky and it may go on its own.

Re: Henry and his poorly eye...

Thanks for all your good wishes.

Henry's eye is starting to look better already with the drops the vet gave us. The redness has all disapeared - now it is just a white lump and after i put the drops in last night it seemed to have disappeared completely but after a little while we could see it again. I think sometimes it moves around more to the back of his eye.

He is such a little angel - i remember when i was younger and one of my mums dogs had eye drops it took two of us to hold her down and someone else to put the drops in.- and that was a jack russell!!!!

Henry knows what i am going to do and he comes and lays on the sofa at the side of me and just lets me put them in. Although in the mornings he sits up after each drop as if to say 'is that it - can i have my food now???'

I am glad he is good though as i cant see Brendan getting up at 5.00am to help me put the drops in before i go to work. He reckons i start work in the middle of the night!!!

I hope everything goes well for the two Sasha's next week too. A busy start to the week for the vets treating boxer dogs.
Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday!
