Sasha had been off colour last week and drinking loads, but I didn't know if it was anxiety or the heat. Her dog walker said she wasn't interested in walking on the Wednesday and there was no improvement by Friday, so we took her to the vet.
She had a high temp and blood in her urine, so vet diagnosed UTI and gave her intravenous antibiotics and some for home. Over the weekend she got worse, very lethargic and drinking massive amounts of water and then refusing food. Last night she refused her bed time treat and then was sick in the night. Took her to the vet this morning and he ran some blood tests. Her kidney function is fine, but she has increased white blood cells and very high calcium levels, which he doesn't know why. She has to go back in tomorrow for more bloods and if the levels are the same, she's got to have a chest & abdomen Xray to see if it's a tumour. If it's not a tumour, it's lots of complicated tests to find out what's causing it, but considering how unwell she is and that she's not eating at all now, I don't know how much time they will have to find out and cure her? She's on two lots of antibiotics to fight whatever infection she has, as her urine is now clear and her temp is down. She's not eating at all now - just had to force chocolate spread & peanut butter down her mouth for her tablets! I'm worried sick. |

I really hope it is nothing too serious Karen. The antibiotics are obviously doing some good if they have bought her temperature back down and her urine is now clear.
I know the hardest part about it all is the not knowing what is wrong but it sounds as if your vet is not wasting any time with the investigation. Keeping my fingers crossed that her calcium levels change by tomorrow and that it is all down to an infection that can be cleared up easily. Thinking of you - I know just how you must be feeling right now and to have to deal with it all without Rob around too - you must be so so worried. ![]()

Sasha's levels hadn't changed much, so she is in having xrays and an ultrasound today.
I asked the vet if he had seen this before, because yesterday I got the feeling he hadn't. But he said yes and when I pushed him some more, he said it's generally not good. She has lost more weight and is now down to 28.6 from her usual 32kg |

Still at a stalemate with Sasha, the only thing we know for sure is that she doesn't have a large tumour, but vet said he cant rule out smaller one.
They have sent off for something called ionised calcium test, to see if they got a false reading, so basically we can't do anything til that comes back. She is still taking antibiotics and we are back on Monday. If things are still the same, she'll have to go to Edinburgh or Glasgow to have further tests, which is going to be a nightmare because hubby is still in Afghanistan and I am not capable of driving! She has lost more weight and is down to 28.6kg and hasn't eaten since 5pm yesterday - not even sardines in scrambled egg or chocolate spread. I still don't know what I am dealing with and I am losing my mind over it with worry. Xrays also showed up that Sasha had spondolosis halfway down her back, as well as arthritis in her hips and lower spine. You wouldn't have known that two weeks ago, but vet reckons it's being exacerbated because she is feeling so unwell. I can't get her to take a rimadyl though and I don't really want to give it on an empty stomach. I did manage to get her antibiotics into her, so fingers crossed she feels better tomorrow. I'm normally a focus on the positive kinda girl, but am struggling with this one. |

She refused sardines tonight, which are her favourite treat. Nothing is tempting her at the moment.

Sasha has been eating today and enjoyed a bimble around the block. I was feeling very confident, but then the vet phoned tonight.
Vet phoned at 5.30 today with Sasha's tests results. Her calcium levels are still high & they need to come down before her kidneys are damaged. She has to spend tomorrow on a drip at the vets ![]() Stress levels are back to max! |

Oh Karen - I was really hoping that it was just an infection - especially when i read earlier that she had started eating again and was a bit more her normal self - i thought the antibiotics were finally kicking in and she was starting to get better.
What will she be on the drip for tomorrow? Is is something to target the calcium level directly? I really do feel for you - i know exactly what you are going through and as i have said previously, the not knowing is the hardest part. I so wished i lived closer and could help you out in whatever way possible - it must be so hard for you with Rob away. It is a lot to deal with on your own. I was only saying to Brendan a couple of nights ago, that i am so glad we got back together - i have no idea how i would have got through the last few months on my own - I would be a complete wreck by now. Just remember that we are all always here if you need someone to talk to - and we are all keeping our fingers crossed for Sasha and for you. ![]()

Sasha is tucked up at the vet today, but will get plenty of attention as she'll be taken out for so many pees with that much saline being pushed through her.
Caroline, they are reducing her calcium levels, before it becomes dangerous to her kidneys. She'll be going on steroids tomorrow, which is to halt the progress of any tumours that could be lurking. Basically, if it is a tumour, she is going to have to have chemo to sort it as it is too small to find and they don't know where it is. She is now down to 28.1kgs My poor baby girl! ![]() ![]() |

Today's treatment didn't work and she still has very high calcium levels.
She has been given dieuretics to keep the fluids going through and on Saturday she'll start on steroids - 12 a day!!! The steroids help prevent the calcium having any effect on the body, organs etc as well as hopefully slowing the progress of any tumour. Day off tomorrow and then back in to the vet on Saturday morning ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Poor Sasha just had a wee in her pull-ups! I put her in the utility room to eat her tea in in peace and she had an accident while she was in there.
Feel so guilty for stressing her like that! ![]() |

Awww poor Sasha
![]() We have given up on our flooring and have just resorted to continuous mopping - our hallway floor was slightly damaged anyway - then when we got Pepsi, we decided that once she was fully house trained we would replace all the flooring - It is in a right state now with all Pepsi & Busta's accidents!!! Luckily we had laminate flooring - can imagine it would not be so easy with carpets ![]()

Sasha has lost more weight and is now down to 27.1kg. Her calcium levels are still high, they have gone back up to the small amount that it was reduced to after the drip. Vet did think about putting her on the drip today, but is doing to give the steroids a chance to take effect over the weekend.

How is Sasha today? Have you seen any improvement yet?
What steroid is she on? Busta is on Prednisolone - 6 x 5mg tablets twice a day. Makes him drink and pee more than usual, however it has got a bit better than when he first started on them, he was on 10 x 5mg twice a day to start with. We are using Tripe to help put some weight back on Busta and it is really working - our vet was amazed that he had put so much back on so quickly. Most pet shops and also pets at home sell it frozen - its only about 80p per pack and we defrost it and mix in about a quarter of a pack with every meal - we also used it with Henry when we were trying to get weight back on him and it really did help. Might be worth a try with Sasha (Both Henry & Busta absolutely love it) - although i was warned not to try cooking it as it stinks out the whole house and is impossible to get rid of the smell!! I really hope you get to the bottom of her problem soon - i really found that the most frustrating thing with both Henry & Busta - the not knowing - at least once you do know it is easier to treat and to deal with overall. Fingers crossed for a proper diagnosis soon ![]()

Now that Sasha is on the steroids, she is eating better. She's having pasta and tinned dog food (chappie & butchers tripe) and managed to maintain her weight today.
She's on 9 x 5mg Prednislone twice a day and 2 x diuretics three times a day. She is lethargic but tries to be happy Caroline. She is my little shadow at the moment, even more than before, bless her. Each day I swing between the fact that I am going to lose her and hope that the vets will find out what it is before it's too late. Here are some photos of her, she looks better in photos lol! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Awww poor Sasha - she has the same expression as Busta - I know what you mean about trying to be happy!
THe steroids do also come in 25mg tablets, but for some reason work out quite a bit more expensive. I actually asked our vet if we could just use the 5mg ones instead as it works out about a third of the price per dose. I got a prescription from my vet and bought Bustas online - they only work out 4p per tablet, whereas my vets were charging 16p each for the 5mg ones and almost £1.50 for the 25mg ones!! Thats good that she is eating better now, the steroids apparently do increase the appetite - Busta is still on three meals a day and he has biscuits down all the time, he is almost back to his normal weight now, just needs to build up the muscle again - it is difficult though as we have to be careful with his exercise so that we don't cause another flare up of the polyarthiritis! Do you know when you will find out if it is a tumour from the tests they have done? Has your vet tested for Lyme disease - this one was of the things that was considered with Busta when they were unable to find the problem. It can also cause high calcium levels and some of her symptoms - lethargic, pain in the back legs are the same. Apparently Lyme disease is becoming a lot more common in the UK. Might be worth a mention of it has not already been tested for? All this must be so stressful for you- I hope you get some answers soon ![]()

Sasha doesn't have hyperparathyroidisn, so now we are back to square one. On the good front her calcium levels are down, but her kidney function tests are up. She is back in tomorrow on a drip to flush her kidneys through. Being weaned off steroids to see if calcium levels stay down, if not through to Glasgow to find either malignant tumour or granuloma.
