Re: Sasha's not well

Thats great news about the calcium levels - Hope they stay down once she is off the steroids.

If its not one thing it's another - hope the kidney issue sorts itself out.

Hopefully each day is taking you closer to some proper answers.

Re: Sasha's not well

I weighed Sasha before I left her at the vet today for her drip and she has gained some weight :banana::banana:

Ok, it's only up to 27.4 from 28.6kg and she'd had a big breakfast and was on steroids, but that hasn't made a difference at previous visits, where she has either lost or only maintained, so as far as I am concerned it is genuine weight gain :cheering::cheering::cheering::cheering:

Re: Sasha's not well

Sasha hasn't gained weight, in fact she lost that little bit she gained the other day, but the vet said not to stress about it.

Liver function tests are still a high, but that's the steroids and should come down as we reduce them.

On the good news front: kidney function tests are back down to normal and calcium levels remain NORMAL! Temp down, urine clear, so we are on still on course for a recovery (although vet is still a bit cautious).

So all in all, a positive visit!! :cheering::cheering::cheering:

Re: Sasha's not well

Thats excellent news Karen - especially about the calcium as that seemed one of the biggest problems previously.

I wouldn't worry about the weight too much either - I know it seems bad as they lose it so quickly, but Busta is gradually putting his back on again. I think it goes back on much slower than it comes off when they are ill.

Fingers crossed she continues to improve:luck:

Re: Sasha's not well

Well that's Sasha back from the vet and it continues to be good news! She has gained weight and is now 28kgs!! Her calcium levels have remained at normal and, whilst her white blood cell count is still high, it has come down a bit. Liver function still high, but that's probably the steroids, which she is down to 2 a day of now. Back in another week, but vet says it's now unlikely she'll need to go to Glasgow! My clever girl!!

Re: Sasha's not well

Sasha update from the vet today: she has gained another 0.5kgs and all her blood work is still where it should be with the white blood cell count dropping again slightly. She is on some meds to help her liver function to recover quicker, but other than that the vet continues to be stumped, and amazed! Back next week for more results and then THREE weeks after that! Woo hoo! xx

Here she is chilling out with a deerhound at the vets today.

Re: Sasha's not well

Am beginning to feel like an over anxious Mum, but I had Sasha back to the vet the other day because she hasn't been eating properly.

She's lost 1kg and she's just not herself.

Vet took some bloods, just to make sure and everything is completely NORMAL! He thinks she has just been knocked for six and is taking time to recover.

She was sick three times in the night last night and hasn't eaten today and Rob hasn't even seen her out with a stick since he has been back. I just don't feel that she is back to how she was before this all happened, but the vets are confident she is just taking her time.

Re: Sasha's not well

Thought I would just put on a quick update about Sasha.

She has still not regained all her lost weight because she continued to be sick, daily for ages. Every time we took her out, she was sick then or immediately after she got home - even if it was a lead walk around the streets.

She was getting really funny with her food, scavenging, but not eating if that makes sense?

We got her some more Butchers tripe tins and that seemed to encourage her to eat again, strangely enough she was still having all the same food, but with a small amount of Butcher's tripe it. This seemed to settle her tummy almost immediately and she wasn't sick for 3 days after that.

She soon started again though, but has again settled down. Yesterday she had her first off lead run in the woods and wasn't sick after or during the night - this means she hasn't been sick now in nearly 3 days!

Her anxiety levels are up and I don't know if that is contributing towards sickness? She's really stressy, so we have put DAP on her bandana and bed a few times, which seems to help a bit.

Today she seems more settled and is playing (noisly) with Natalie, so we are hoping she has finally turned that final corner to getting back to normal!!!

xx

Re: Sasha's not well

Must agree with the tripe thing, my sister has had great success with Great Danes using this method. Does wonders for skittish or tender tummies, and puts a bit of beef on their bones. It was like total ambrosia healthwise.
Specifically, boiling raw tripe, diced. The boiled dices could be frozen till needed, the juice/water can be heated and used to soak their dry food. The diced tripe can be introduced to regular feeding and/or given as treats. And they love it!
Pity it will stink out the whole village, but that always came as a secondary consideration to wellfare of my sister's dogs.

Re: Sasha's not well

Eww no, we just have the tinned Butcher's Tripe loaf. The vet actually said we should stop it when she seemed to recover the first time, as the tins are so high in fat and have no dietry goodness as such.

They cannot understand why it has made a difference, especially as she is having so little of it - t hey really are quite confused by her. Their answer has been "she's a boxer, they write their own rule books" lol

As long as she's happy, we'll keep it going, although she is sat beside me and her tummy is making lots of noises this morning :luck:

Re: Sasha's not well

Well Sasha hasn't been sick in over a week now :cheering::cheering:

We took them for several walks over the weekend and Sasha thoroughly enjoyed herself and even managed a bit of mischief along the way - taking her and Tizzy off down a cliff path so she could go for a paddle. She was really throwing herself into the walk and had an absolute ball, ears were up, tail was wagging the whole way and she was just bright and breezy!

I have to say, I think we can finally feel that she has put it all behind her! :cheering::cheering:

Great news :waa:

just as an added note Polo has James Wellbeloved, always bought it from local pet shop for approx 46, ordered it online recently from zooplus for 39.99

also just resourced our cat food, one of our cats is on a special (royal canin) urinary dried food, always bought it from the vets as it wasn't available (when I last checked years ago :crying: ) online. We pay over 33 for a 3.5kg bag - have ordered a 6kg bag of exactly the same stuff for 34.46 from pet-supermarket.co.uk - only wish I'd checked it out online earlier :blushing:

Re: Sasha's not well

Back from vets and it's not good news. Sasha's calcium levels and white blood cell count are really high again and her weight is down to 24.5kgs (2kgs loss since Thurs). She is back on 18 steroids a day and antibiotics. We are basically going to try and keep the levels under control and keep her comfy. We have decided not to take her to Glasgow, as it is so rare for a dog with hypercalcema to be cured and it's too much to put her through.

The hope is that we can find a level with the steroids etc, that will keep the calcium levels under control and keep her well. We don't know how long we will be able to do that for, but as long as she is not being sick and seems happy, we will continue.
