help!!

Hi all,

Our beautiful puppy Chance has a TERRIBLE habit that may kill him! He eats socks.. So far he has eaten (whole) 4 and has thrown them all up. I have been keeping him on a leash at ALL times, but while I was taking a shower Wed. He found one of the girls socks and swallowed it. I have waited for 2 days for him to throw it up and them this morning he threw it up alng with a WASH CLOTH. How in the world, he did that I will never know. He has been gaining weight and eating and going potty all through these ordeals. You would never know anything is wrong except for the missing sock (or towel). Have any of you ever heard of such a thing. I am petrified that he will eat something and it will get lodged. The vet warned me about that, but never gave me any clue as to what I should do. He goes back to the vet today for his last round of shots. I'm currious as to what he will say..

Thanks,
Michelle

Re: help!!

It sounds like your Chance has a bit of a fettish there!!

I have never had experience of this kind of habit, but I suppose it is just like any other bad habit and you just have to catch him doing it and make it unpleasant for him?

Firstly I would try and make sure that all socks, cloths etc are kept out of the way until he breaks the habit!!

My idea would be to offer a sock to Chance - as soon as he goes to take it, make a loud noise or shake a bottle of stones to distract him. When he looks away, praise him (use a clicker if you have one) and give him the treat. Then offer the sock again........ make the noise etc when he goes to take it and repeat the praise when he looks away. Repeat this process until he doesn't even try and take the sock .................... it may take some time though!

Basically what you are trying to do is praise him for not taking the sock - if that makes sense, and make it more worth his while not to take it. You may have to concentrate on this for a couple of days, but like children, they soon learn what is best for them. Pretty soon he should forget completely about wanting socks etc.

Hope that helps??

Re: help!!

Not experienced the sock fetish but Molly eats stones, we used to worry a lot but she always brings them ba up or if they are very small she passes them through the other end!!

As Karen suggests try some kind of diversion technique or find a sound that he dislikes that he can associate with his undesirable behaviour.

Re: help!!

When I took Chance to the vet, he said there was really nothing i could do except take away all temptations. So we did a thorough cleaning of our house... and I have been keeping him on a leash or with me at all times. So far we are 8 days without eating anything foreign...Keep your fingers crossed for us =) hopefully he will continue to forget about eating socks!!

Re: help!!

Good luck! Sounds like he is on the first of his 10 Step Programme!!

I can see him being able to stand up soon and say "Hello My name is Chance and I haven't eaten a sock in 2 months"!!

Re: help!!

Just an update.

Well he did it again. I have no idea when or where he got the sock. We have been watching him like a hawk! But yesterday when I got home from work he went outside to do his business and he "pooped" a sock. Usually he throws them up, but this time it went all the way through...I don't know what we are going to do with him. We are lucky it didn't get stuck!!

Say a prayer!

Re: help!!

Have you tried the disassociation therapy? If you happened to see Dog Borstal, you can see how effective it can be using the stones in a bottle?

Will keep my fingers crossed for you!
