Addisons Disease

Hi folks, have just returned from the vets (see comment in Chaos's mums bit about dodgy tums) Any how the vet is unsure what is wrong with Heskey. Hes a little concerned that since we have had him he has only managed to put on two kilos and is still underweight (tho not drastically so) He thinks there is a slight possibility that Heskey may have Addisons disease. I can find out info on the web but wondered if anyone had first hand experience.

Fingers crossed,he goes for blood tests in a fortnight and then atleast we will know where we are or go back to the drawing board. Who knows it could just be one of those boxer quirks (and boy do they have them!) Just thankful that this time i took out insurance.

Re: Addisons Disease

Addison Dogs

Sounds pretty intense, but it seems that, with the right medication, Heskey will be back to his "normal" self! Perhaps you can have some separate meds to prevent that too!

The reason I put that link on is because of the picture half way down on the left hand side! Now that's a boxer that feels sorry for itself.

Fingers crossed for the "boxer quirks" diagonsis - let us know wont you!!

Big hugs to Heskey!

Re: Addisons Disease

Hes fine at the moment and full of beans...think i might have to see about medication to stop him being normal! (normal isnt quite a word i would use with a boxer!)

Re: Addisons Disease

Blood tests tomorrow mornings. His symptoms at the moment are days when hes really lethargic, appears very flat in mood and doesnt want to eat anything (including the food on my plate). That was the reason we went to the vets. He then found that Heskey has a really slow heart beat which is unusual for a boxer who has just been hypermanic in the waiting room. Hes put everything together and suspects Addisons, although he says it is quite rare and that i could just have a quirky dog! Hopefully should have the results this week.

Re: Addisons Disease

Good news folks. All blood test results back and are all normal! (that was quick, we only went yesterday). Have to go back in a month to be weighed and to see the vet for an update. Hes not to worried as says he is not worringly underweight. Will do further tests if weight doesnt improve. At least we know its not addisons, thryoid or diabetes. Suspect i have another quirky boxer!!!!!

Great News!!!

Good to see Heskey is still keeping you on your toes - you know it's not supposed to be easy owning a boxer Liz!

Glad it's nothing ominous though, must be a weight off your mind.:roundnround:

I am really pleased for you Liz. It must have been a real worry waiting for the results.

How is Heskey feeling in himself now?

Hes as bright as a button at the moment (driving us all demented with his "New favourite toy". Also eating grass like its going out of fashion, i think he believes if he doesnt eat it all now, it will have gone by tomorrow. Have to keep a diary of his "off" days to see if there is any pattern.

Re: Addisons Disease

I was watching "The Wright Stuff" the other day and that cute vet Joe (used to be on Vets in Practice?) said that he had a dog that thought it was a cow and constantly ate grass and that some dogs just do.

I don't know if it is true or not, but my theory was, if a vet's dog can eat grass then it should be ok! I suppose you just have to make sure there is nothing on the grass?

Glad Heskey is feeling happy happy happy again!

Keeping me on my toes!!! Keeping my vet in foreign holidays more like! (actually that was Jake as i stupidly didnt insure him!) EEhh he runs around that field, get really sloobery chops and then starts eating grass....its like walking a rabid cow!

Hes sulking now cos Mike has gone out with out taking him!

Re: Addisons Disease

Liz, just caught up with this. Glad Heskey is ok.

On the weight side, what are you feeding him (apart from grass:biggrin:smile: the reason I ask is the girl who's kennels we use swears by Arden Grange. I have had Blue on itt for about a year. There are no addatives or colourants, a bit like James wellbeloved. She mentains it's the only food that keeps weight on her great danes. Blue does really well on it too. Might be the answer. Let me know how you get on.
