Do any of your babies suffer from heat sickness at all?
This weekend was probably the hottest Sasha has ever had to put up with and I dont know if it was that, or the constant threat of water pistols, which made her ill? My son took her for a long walk on the beach late in the day, with strict instructions to keep her out of seaweed and water. He says she didnt drink too much seawater, although she did manage to get some. When she came back she threw everything up and then drank three bowfuls of water! Consequently I was up three times in the night and had a couple of puddles to clear up! I dont know if it was the seawater, or just the temperature of the whole weekend that made her sick. Anyone else had problems like that?

well it just sounds like she over did it and I would not let her drink three bowlfuls of water, that alone would make my boxer throw up. He tries to drink really fast and we actually tell him to stop so he will slow down. The can also get bloat from water so be careful on that. I hope she is fine now she is cool and rested..

Yes, they can suffer from heat - shorter nose etc. I wouldnt take mine beyond the garden in intense heat. Keep fans on in the house. Even have a fan for them in the car. It seems to have a placebo effect and they snooze even in the very intense heat if I HAVE to go out in the car with them.
No matter how careful you are with them - out with the wide expanse of the ocean and sand etc, they will go all out to enjoy themselves. I had a dog collapse on me one day when I had him out very early [7am] one hot summer. Vet wanted to operate and trim his elongated soft palate but thought that a bit drastic so took him out earlier at 6am that summer or nearer to midnight. We were concerned about Katie on Saturday night when "Rico" came to play. When he had gone home she was panting excessively for too long so from now on she will be out for a very quick play and in again. Two pups the same age - go mad together and at those ages - 9 and 12 months, they have little to no sense! Yesterday was dreadful here, girls just poddled in and out of the garden into the house where the fans were full on. More in the house though. Im not walking them tonight either, there is a bit of a breeze but its stifling. I will wait until another half hour or so has passed and then do a bit of training with them. Hope Sasha is okay. Sounds familiar - Molly's good in the sun and takes it easy round the house and garden just lying in the shade. Tash used to be a nightmare, suffering from sunstroke and heat exhaustion because she just would not stay out of the sun - even with loads of sun block on she used to suffer bless her. Now she has matured slightly she has started taking it a bit easier and just flops in the shade when it is really hot or lays on the wooden floor in the living room enjoying the draft from the patio doors. Walks are strictly confined to after 10.00pm and then only on the cycle track so that they do not have a wide open space to pelt around!! Both Molly and Tash are prone to vomiting when they have drunk sea water although I have to say they have both learn't from experience that it has ill effects on them so generally now they avoid consuming it if at all possible. Have you tried taking a 2 litre bottle of fresh water with you and letting her have occasional drinks of it every 15 minutes or so - not too much just enough to quench her thirst? Alternatively just stop now and again for 5 minutes and make her lie down in some long grass as early morning late evening it will be moist and will cool her down quite quickly. Hope the above helps - we generally try to keep our 2 calm during the hot days so as not to over excite them although I know this can be hard with young kids or visitors around. Paul |

I dont think drinking the sea water is a good idea! and as Azboxer has said bloat is a terrible thing. Try not to let her drink too much. A little a lot kind of thing.
I dont take Blue out when it's really hot as its too difficult for him to cool down again. A good trick for cooling them down is to place a towel in cold water, then place it over there face.

Glad to see it's not just Sasha then.
I will make more of an effort to keep her calm when its hot like that. Because there wasn't much sun, I didnt really think about it. She isnt actually allowed to drink sea water, she just manages to grab some when I'm not looking - we normally take a bottle of water with us whenever we go out anyway. My son said that she was refusing her bottle water, then going off drinking seawater!! Little mare!! I didn't know about bloat - I was more worried about her being dehydrated after drinking sea water and throwing everything back up, especially with the heat around, that's why I let her drink the water. I will make sure restrict her if it happens again - let her have little and often rather than three bowls at once! She didnt suffer from that though - other than the three puddles and the full bladder at 2am!

Forgot to say I had to stop taking Rosie down to the shore as she would race onto the sand and no matter if the sea was a mile out, she would just zone in on it and go at what seemed like 90mph. I could never keep her out of it and yes she too drank the sea water and then had diarrhea and was sick after it. I said to the vet and she said better to avoid the sea. Such a shame as its great exercise for them and they enjoy it so but they are like kids, dont realise what is good or what is not good for them. She fooled me last year, tried her again and for 2-3 times she ignored the water, then next time straight back to the sea - sneaky eh!!! My first Boxer used to immerse her head under the water [ears and all] and "watch" what was going on underwater. Vet couldnt believe it as he said that dogs dont generally like getting their ears wet/water in the ears. Never did her a bit of harm but then they are all different. Had to watchher too as she would have swam out and kept going. When she pulled her head out of the water, the water would have went everywhere. She was a character. Our other Boxer girl at that time loved the water too and loved swimming but out lad at the time. He wouldnt even paddle and if a spot of rain so much as touched him, he would whinge and cry until he got home!! Glad Sasha is okay. Helen |

Polo sticks his head right underwater in the river - it almost looks like he's looking for fish to catch. He's only been to the sea once and wasn't too impressed with the taste
 but loved tearing round on the sand, even decided to chase a quad bike

Blue hasn't had a thing to eat today, obviously too hot for him, mind you the fly's enjoyed it LOL Had to put it in the bucket. He's not getting out til alot later, still too hot here!

Heat is horrendous here. Nearly midnight and still 29C. Hate thoughts of bed. Last night I had just drifted off as Rosie was uncomfortable in the heat. Woke up about 4am, hotter than ever with just a sheet over me to find tucked against my back - Katie. Her body radiates like a little thermal hot water bottle at the best of times

Sasha got me up twice in the night - dont think she was particularly enamoured with the heat either! Must admit, I hadnt noticed it until she woke me!
She went to the beach again last night. My son says all the seaweed has gone now so that explains why she hasnt come out in any more rashes! He says she was on the beach, she went in the water, but didnt drink any this time. I suppose she just wasn't as hot as last time.
