Hi everyone
Well Wednesday we had a bad night when out walking. My little snowflake decided she would like to "sail" through the air, on a shorter lead too, she went across me and half landed on Rosie. Oh what a trial last night was, wonder my throat was not sore saying "Katie, heel". She was soooooo naughty! Thursday night: What a change, still had her moments of course but for most of her walk, she kept more or less beside me. Much more pleasant all round. Bathed Rosie again tonight, her skin is bad at present. You have to leave this shampoo on for 10-15 mins. She toddles about outside / conservatory covered in a creamy lather. Once rinsed she soon dried off as it was hot today. I have two new harnesses on order so hope to get them tomorrow. They sent the wrong colours to the shop last week. I had asked for two reds and they sent a black and a blue!!!! Helen:spinsmile: |

What's wrong with Rosie's skin Helen? I only ask because I am still having probs with Sasha's and I wondered if it was something similar?
Sasha has bad skin under her neck - it is rough and fur is falling out, as well as there being a rash, some of which is red and raised (but not hives???!!!) It is so frustrating trying to pin it down! Sounds like your Katie is a real handful!! Good luck with the harnesses, hopefully that'll calm her down a bit while on the lead! Sounds like she has far too much energy compared to yours and Rosie's levels!

Yes Rosie has that on her throat too - is Sasha's itchy? Rosie's is. Her feet are red, sore and itchy all at the same time. Then she will be covered in hives at intervals and itch like crazy. At the moment she is being bathed twice a week in a rich oatmeal based shampoo which is certainly helping the hives. It is called Epi-soothe and we get it from the vets. It leaves a protective film on the skin to moisten and protect it. She also gets 6 Piriton a day to help with the itches and I am trying a new ointment from Dogs Stuff [Kleen face Company] called Mink balm on her feet - it is sort of glycerine/oil based but I think it is helping her feet problem, anything is worth a try as the steroiid ointment from the vets was not doing anything. The long term antibiotics were wrecking her tummy. I was told by a Boxer breeder to spinkle a little sulphur in their food but darn if I can get any anywhere. Saw some advertised in a Health company site under the name of MSM so ordered some of that although its in capsule form so will have to be very careful on what to use. You will most likely find that once the summer is over and the cooler weather comes in Sasha's throat will clear up. In the first instance I would get an oatmeal shampoo. You dont need to bath the whole dog although it would do no harm but twice a day bath the affected area. I would highly recommend the Epi-soothe but I have a pal with Boxers and she buys Oatmeal shampoos from Shaws pet products over the net and has had great success from it. My poor Rose between her hip and swollen feet does not have high energy levels and just likes a dander, preferably not too far. She gets several walks a day other than long marathon sessions. Katie would walk as far as you could take her and more. She would spend all day running so have to give her exercise on her own but she likes the dander with Rosie as well. She gets her fast exercise in the form of ball chasing and her training sessions. The latter I do seperately as Rosie is very good at it whereas Katie is too impatient but she needs to learn her p's and q's. With a pup not yet a year old you have to balance their exercise and too much is not necessarily a good thing even though the vets may tell you otherwise! Helen |

I will take all that info on board! Sasha's feet and paws are fine though and, apart from that recent incident, doesn't have any spots etc anywhere else.
She is having 16mg of piriton a day now and I will continue that throughout the summer. Her neck didnt just start in the summer though, she has been suffering from it since around Christmas. I wrote about that in a previous thread about collars and took the advice there to loosen her collar til it was hanging and took her feather pillow away from her. At the moment she is completely collarless in the hope that her neck clears up a bit - am wondering if the salt that got into her collar has aggrevated it. Being collarless makes it very interesting to try and grab her when she bolts to the door to say hi though!! Yes the skin looks dry and sometimes she does seem to itch at it, but I will look out some oatmeal shampoo in the meantime. I am wondering if she has taken a reaction to the Baby Shampoo we are using and may well switch that to a hypersensitive one in the meantime. Thanks Helen!

We leave the collar off too as much as possible. Vet told us to leave it off. Rosie's problems would be all year round too, just worse in the summer. Seasalt shouldnt really aggravate her. My first Boxer used to get relief from her feet [she had itchy feet syndrome too] after being in the sea. I used to buy packets of seasalt to bathe her feet in. I heard from a girl recently who has a boxer with same skin problems and although she breeds her dogs, she decided not to breed from this particular bitch so as not to pass the condition on to future generations. Unfortunately it does seem to be in some breeding lines. Passed down so to speak. Hopefully Sasha's problem will never get worse than round her throat. Helen |
