New Year, bad start

If anyone has spotted that I haven't been as noisy as usual, I am sorry. I am just getting my head above water after a very bad week.

My dad was ill before and during Christmas with a chest infection and finally got taken into hospital last Fri with pneumonia and had to have a chest drain done etc - still draining a week later

Trouble is, he had a chest xray at the local hospital on Friday and the charming doctor there told us, point blank and very bluntly, that he thought it had all been caused by a tumour Needless to say it has been a stressful week waiting for results - none of which are arriving very quickly.

Anyway, I finally managed to get a long chat with one of his doctors yesterday and apparently they aren't concerned that it is anything other than what they are treating him for. He said it was very "brave" of the other doctor to give such a firm diagnosis without waiting for any further tests.

So, we are still waiting for news, but it appears it is less threatening than it was. Dad is still in hospital and wont be home til next week, so I am visiting him every day etc. I had to put his poor lab in kennels on the RAF camp here - I feel so guilty, but I just cant cope with another dog, plus he is really neurotic and it took us 6 months to cure Sasha after he stayed the last time!

Hubby is away just now (RAF) but my sister is arriving tomorrow so at least I have someone to share the workload with.

I am checking posts everyday, just not finding the time, or energy to reply to many!! I didn't want to say anything until I was a little more sure of what was happening.

Sorry to hear your news Karen

The waiting has to be the hardest part - you always think the worst - its natural.
Sounds a bit more positive now though.

I know how tiring it can be visiting someone in hospital every day. It really does drain you, its not just the travelling etc but the worry too.

I don't think you should feel guilty at all for putting the lab in kennels - you are already doing plenty and after last time when Sasha became very unsettled it is not like it would be a short term fix.

Hopefully you will get a bit more rest once your sister arrives and you have someone to help out.

I hope you continue to recieve good news and that he is well again and home soon.

:blowkisses:Hugs and kisses from us all.

Sorry to hear your Dad's not been well Karen, hope it's nothing more serious and he's soon on the mend :flowers:

My Mum's not been too well recently so understand a little of what you're feeling - as Helen said, they're a worry :worried:

Hi Karen
Hope all works out well and your dad is ok soon. It's not nice when our parents get older and we have to worry about them. My dad wasn't well last year but eventually all turned out ok although he was too stubborn to see a doctor. I saw him at Christmas and he doesn't look well at all so I know what it's like to worry. Keep your chin up and we'll all be here when you're ready to post stuff again. This hug is from Gixer :bighug:

Thanks folks. Had my sister up this weekend, so we did both visiting times at the hospital - tiring, but it was good to see her.

My Dad had his drain taken out on Saturday, but it seems they are thinking about having to put it back in :worried: We were beginning to think we were looking at a home time date, but maybe not now.

Will find out more when we go and visit him tonight. It's his birthday so we are taking him in a big choc cake with a candle and a balloon.:birthday2:

Re: New Year, bad start

Dad has his drain back in and probably wont be home until next week now!

Feeling really guilty, I went up to see his dog Alfie at the Police Dog section today. I had held off because I didn't want to confuse him.

Anyway, Alfie was one of the three dogs who came to the door to greet me and he looks great! Apparently he is spending most of his time in the office area with the other guys' dogs, so today he had a sprocker and a bull mastiff/english bull mastiff cross to play with.

He said hello for about 5 mins and then went off to see one of the guys and practically ignored me for the rest of the time I was there - he didn't even try and follow me when I left.

I am so relieved to know he is so happy and relaxed - it's a weight of my mind because I was feeling so guilty!! He would be stressed out with us and instead, he is having a party!! :excited::waa:

Thats good to hear about your dads lab. Hope your dad is on the mend as well though. Tell you the truth, I had to look up "sprocker" OK, it's a dog.
By the way. The sky was very active over Aberdeen last night. At around 7 to 8 o'clock there were many objects hitting the atmosphere and burning up. They seemed to be moving a lot slower than the usual shooting stars, and glowed bright blue. All came from "The Plough" area and shot south, burning off (with a flash) before they left the starboard. It was glorious, I wish I could have watched it all night.

Re: New Year, bad start

Got a 20 mins warning yesterday before they took my Dad through to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary which is nearly two hours away from me.

I managed to get through to the hospital with all his stuff but were in no way prepared and he left without any money, not enough pjs and no fresh fruit etc!!

They said he would have treatment at ARI and then be sent back fairly quickly, so I didn't stress too much. Found out today that they aren't doing anything until Thurs when they MAY operate!! What was the bloody rush!!!

I am not a nice person just now am either  or :crying:

Am hoping he will be back this way by week on Monday but don't rate our chances! Unfortunately the distance and my health make visiting very hard now.

Re: New Year, bad start

Well I finally managed to get through to Aberdeen to see my Dad today and have found out all about his surgery tomorrow. For the more gruesome amongst you, I have given you links to find out more, but I figured not everyone would want to know!!

He is having surgery tomorrow which will include a thoractomy, a pleurectomy and a decortication. This will take about two hours and will include the removal of one of his ribs.

I am going to be a bag of nerves tomorrow, but I know this is the right thing for him to have done.

I spoke to the surgeon today myself and he is very comfortable that Dad will do well during the surgery and should make a good recovery.

Hope your dad is doing well Karen.
Well, my dad got out today from (Ward 16) yet another blood transfusion. They are working up to a prostate cancer surgery. We are so happy to have him home, and wish the cure(surgery) would come soon and conclusive.
We may have passed in the halls Karen! Been up and down, in and out for quite some time.
Did not really want to push family problems on the site, but to relate, this can happen to us all at any time. I visit the ARI regularly. (I can go ballistic at parking costs, so don't start)

Re: New Year, bad start

Sorry to hear about your Dad Jill, I hope the sort something out for him soon. It's frustrating isn't it, just waiting for them to sort things out - when there is nothing you can do about it. Glad he is home now though - ARI is a horrible place!

We went up on Wed and had to park right up by the Eye Clinic, and that was with a disabled badge!!! Walked miles to get to Ward 50 as we came in at A&E!

Dad had surgery yesterday and is in the High Dependency Unit just now but will be back on 50 this afternoon. We have got special permission to go up outside visiting hours today. We didn't get back until 7pm last time, and that's just not fair on the kids!

Fingers crossed he will be heading back to Elgin early next week.

Please let us know how your Dad is doing Jill - if you don't post, I will PM you! :flowerkiss:

We still have to have the biopsy results, but I think the third thing is the fact that it turned out not to be cancer. I'll happily take that as my third!
