filling the cooling system
I have a Typ3 with a rabbit gti engine.Cooler in front.I killed the engine last year after installing by not filling the system properly,I think.Let it idle, but fan came not on (switch and wiring ok). When I checked on the upper water outlet on the engine, there was (a lot of) hot air,but NO water! Since I have installed my new engine,I would like to ask you how to fill correctly BEFORE killing another motor (can`t afford even another used one).
1.What cooler to use (with filler cap or without )?
2.When filling, open cooler valve to let air out or cooler closed?
3.Raise the car front / rear ?
4.Expansion tank is on highest point,do I need another one or a separate bleeder valve?
5.Anyone knows why VW uses 2 expansion tanks on the tdi-buses?
Thanks,
Reimar (Augsburg,Germany)

Re: filling the cooling system
is your filler cap at the highest point, and if it is do you have any points where there may be air stuck in the lines? you might need to put a bleeder valve and pressurize the system to get all the air out. im building a baja with an ej22 so cant help u with the expansion tanks, sorry

Re: filling the cooling system
Hi Reimar,
1.I would run a radiator without filler cap.
2. + 3. when filling open any valve you have shortly a few times (valve on the heater etc.) Lift the front of car.
4. no other expansion tank needed
5. no idea
I fill my system this way:
Fill the expansion tank, let the engine run a few minutes.
Let the engine cool down for 30 minutes and lift the front of the car. Put it down again and fill more coolant, let the engine run again. I repeat it 2 more times. It is important to put the cap on the expansion tank while the engine is cooling down. If you donīt put it on the coolant will spill out ,it got to be a closed system. Check the hoses or tubes to the radiator when the engine is running, you can feel when the thermostat opens.
Sorry for my English, I am as German as You are.
You can find lots of informationat this Australian website:

Good luck with your new engine.

Re: filling the cooling system
Thank you for your help! Just coming from my garage and-
it works!
I have installed the same cooling system now as on the transporter-tdi engines, and now there is no problem at all with filling and idling the engine.
Seems to me that air couldnīt get out of one of the coolant lines on the setup before, because there was only one routing to the expansion tank, and when filling, looks like some air gets trapped.
If anyone should experience similar problems,I would like to help and show my setup, works quite ok now.
