Hi

Has anyone shortened the sumps on subi motors? They are pretty low.

Hey Steve,

I am really new to this...just got my engine today. We are getting out kit from Sharpe built, and they have a new aluminium short sump...
I am doing mine with Jak and Paul...

Re: Sumps
What is the asking price for the oil pan, and sump from Sharpe? Kennedy Eng is charging around $200.00 USD and that is :confusedgreen:if you send them your items to shorten, and they return them to you. I'm not happy about their turn around time. One would think that they would have some pre-mades on hand? In the mean time one must sit with no pan and sump while your's is in transit and being retyro-fitted by Kennedy, when I spoke with them they wouldn't even give me an estimted turn around time? Heck it could takes weeks, or longer?????????

Hi,
If any one knows where to find the shortened sump for the subaru engine could you please post it. I have searched like scooby doo after the crew split up and have came back empty. Any reply is greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

Hi, Im a gearhead at heart just kinda new at stuffing different things into a bug. Looking for alt power for a street legal sand rail. As far as a shortened pan goes what is it made from? I would suspect any welding shop could shorten one for you or am I missing something?

Re: Sumps
Well, The first I had heard of it was here, andmade by "sharp built" along with his adation kit. As for shortening the sump I don't know if the oil that would be lost from shortening the sump would be redistributed or the engine would be fine with a little less oil.

Thanks for responding

Re: Sumps
The sump could be lowered as well as widened on the bottom similar to what we used to do to small block Chevy's when added capacity was needed and we could not go lower.

In Oz:
you could try Brad. He's making shortened sumps that hold the stock oil capacity for $440 exchange per this post
http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=24449 and
http://www.customoffroad.com.au/partFull.asp?partid=30

Also Mike Sharp of Sharp Built. He was going to have alloy ones made up that were shorter than stock but the same capacity. I don't know if that eventuated.
http://www.sharpbuilt.com.au/dunebug.htm

If money is no object then go for the fully baffled alloy race version from MRT Rally. http://www.mrtrally.com.au/shop/
The product code is suwe120a , but at $1079.50 + GST I'll have to wait 'till I win the lotto!

Re: Sumps
I've spoken to Mike and he will modify the stock sump so it's 2" shorter but with the same capacity for $285.

The alloy design he was doing was for a 3" shortened sump with the same capacity, but that has now been canned because other people have had problems with bearing failure.
Not sure if he is eventually going to get an alloy 2" shortened one made up.

John Edwards of Costa Mesa R&D Automotive machine shop was making a 6qt aluminum shortened pan. I can't get the pic to load but his # is(949)631-6376 it also was about $400

Re: Sumps
:newtonguesmile:Yes they do a 5-speed-trans conversion, its a Porsche 901 or a 914.But it is too expensive I think. If you want a 5- speed-trans go for a Porsche 915. I talked to some Porsche folks and read in Porsche websites. They all said that the 901/914 boxes are too weak and even Porsche 914 drivers installed the 915 box. And no they only got the sump for the ej- engines. But you can shorten the original sump 2" and widen it at the bottom. I did it to mine loosing only 0.7 liter oilcapacity. A friend of mine rides his bug like that for more than 4 years without any problem, even in summer.

subaru in a 72 ghia help!!!
hey everyone, this is the first time i've posted on this site. i've been reading quite a bit about putting the subaru engines into bugs and i've seen some radical turboed ghias, but nothing about what it takes to put the engine in. i know i need the adapter kit, radiator in the front(i would like to see some pictures of radiators in ghias), piping for the water, wiring harness and ECU(how do you splice the harnesses together?), are there any suspension issues, oil cooler, what engine to use and does it need to be braced. what will i have to cut to make the engine fit. what tranny can i use for the stock subaru hp? i've seen something about the oil sump, what's up with that? these are a lot of questions, but i appreciate your help. i was looking at the rotary conversion, but motors are too hard to find here for cheap. thanks for your input.

I have the 5 cm (2") shortened sump from Bugat5speed in Germany

The owner of the shop is German but communicates very well in English via email, took about 2 weeks from payment to arrival.

Sorry for this late reply, but the dimensions are 270mm x 400mm x 50mm. I cut the sump so there was 50mm left standing.
For the drain-plug I welded in a nut M20x1.5 so I could use the plug of the suby

Re: Sumps
regarding shortened sumps, bad idea. think about it, you shorten the pan and you lose capicity. ok you say, i'll widen the pan with pockets, remember, you only have one pickup, with this type of pan setup you have created a greater area for the oil to move awat from the pickup. result, spun bearings i have been building subaru's ssince early 1992. don pauter made the first stroker that i am aware of for me with the stroke and overbore we ended up with 2445 cc's. cams from web cams, titanium retainers forged venolia pistons, pauter aluminum rods, ported and polished heads, hilborn fuel injection, t4 turbo and methanol we ende up with right at580/600 hp in a sand bugggy that weighed in at 980 lbs. i have been through all sorts of combinations. current motor is H6 turbo and link plus engine management. what a ball to dune with! don't shorten your pan, bearing failure will follow.why do you think race cars have tall dry sump systems with several pickup points on the engine?

Re: Sumps
I think if you are close to stock stance, you shouldn't need to shorten your sump. I checked mine out and it looks like I have at least 5 or 6 inches clearance. If you have less than that you're probably either too low or sagging. Just be careful... or make sure your exhaust hangs a bit lower.. that way you'd lose your exhaust before your oil.

Re: Sumps
Reviving this thread due to question I saw earlier.

Some folks had asked about the Bugat5speed Sump.

Here are some pics:

Some info on the product:
Details:
-Works with EJ 2.0, 2.2 and 2.5 blocks
-The sump is sandcasted like all our other parts.
-The capacity of oil is 4,25 litres (thatīs only 0,25 less than original). If you shorten an original sump you loose about a 1 litre.
-It is very stabile (you can put a hydraulic lifter under it and lift the car), so nothing happens if the car is low and the sump hits the floor). If you have the original sump, thatīs virtually impossible.
-The cooling properties are much better than with the original one. Water temperature is reduced by about 10 degrees Celsius, if you switch from original to the bug@5Speed sump.
-The pick-up tube inside the sump must be modified (shortened). But thatīs no big deal. Anyone who does such a project will easily handle this task.
-The original dipstick can be used, but must be shortened a little.

If interested, feel free to contact me: Bugat5speed@yahoo.com

Re: Sumps
a friend of mine (subarubug) just had a good idea to avoid the oilpan has to be shortened. Just raise the rear of your gearbox by modifying the rear mounting. Doing it this way the engine will be angled like in the stock engine bay in a legacy and lift the oilpan.
