So Excited!!

This is my 67, its been under construction for a year now. Had a few set backs but now we are rolling again. Have everything to complete the swap minus a few odds and ends. Still have to complete body and paint right now the car is a rolling shell. The chassis is done, stripped and undercoated, discs, new lines, Porsche D-90s. I've had the motor for a while but just got the adapter yesterday so I had to put it in to mock up an exhaust. Now looking at the motor in I am SO eager to finish it! I can't wait. I've done a ton of reading on this site and others so thanks for all the great info!!! I'll keep you posted as work progresses.

BTW:
the motor is a 13b 6 port stock port. I chose to go with the weber 45 dcoe. stock trans for now.

That thing should be plenty fast. You mentioned in an email you thought about regearing it eventually? As is freeway speeds will be about 4000rpm at 80mph which is nothing for that engine. Your top speed however will increase drastically with the rotary's rpm range. Theoretically you could do 160+ with the stock vw trans.

Really? I was unsure as to how it would be when I first get it on the road. I had just assumed from reading that it would need regearing but I would be very happy if not. I dont plan to thrash the car as all of the time and money invested I will drive it with respect. Not to say I will baby it. I would like a limited slip though with the extra power. Luckily they are cheap for these trannys. As for an update: I have all of the 2.5" stainless mandrel bends sitting at home waiting to get cut up and welded together. I finally decided where I am going to route the exhaust and just got the muffler in the mail yesterday. I already cut flanges out of 1/4" stock but the high exhaust temps of the rotary have me nervous and I am going to remake them out of 1/2". I'd rather go overkill than under. Also I just finished a directfire ignition setup so I'll have one coil for each leading plug and one for both trailing plugs ( three total). This will help low end driveability, have better combustion and no backfires. I'll get picks up soon.

here are a few pics of exhaust work under way. what i have is 2.5" stainless pipes with 1/2" flanges.







I think the intake man.- exhaust man. combo looks nice. hopefully it will perform nicely aswell. I am running the exhaust under the motor and will turn towards the rear into a muffler on the passenger side of the motor then dumped. I only have the one muffler at the moment. Any thoughts as to noise level with only one muffler? I know its going to be loud but I don't want to get pulled over every 5 min.

Looks great! I'm just a bit concerned about the header pipes going under the engine. Headers on a rotary will glow red under even a partial load. Cooling the oil may be difficult enough without introducing the heat from the nearby header. It's something to consider anyhow..
Regarding noise, you are correct that it will be loud. How loud yours may be will be determined by how effective your muffler is. I have an RX7 with a catalytic converter and one 3-inch ID, 18" long Dynomax muffler. At 50 feet and at WOT, it measures 89db. Without the Cat, it measured 91db. A more restrictive muffler would likely be more quiet.

yeah I realized the location of the exhaust won't be ideal so I think I'm going to try to reroute it and keep everything on the left side. I might try to get ahold of some presilencers to cut down on the sound. thanks for the input!!!

How exactly are you handling the spark? Distributor or CAS?
I'm patiently waiting for my Kennedy adapter, but there is plenty to think about in the meantime.

I am using a 12a dist. that i found on ebay. once i got it i rebuilt it. basically just took it apart and cleaned it and regreased the advance mechanism bearing. new cap and rotor and good to go. And of course I have to make things complicated. I was doing some research on the mazda ignition and learned about a homemade directfire ignition setup. So I built one and its not done yet but i have to mount it in the car first before i finish the wiring.

with this setup you have one coil for each leading plug rather than both leading plugs having to share one coil. It seems the result is more power better driveability (especially when cold) and more complete combustion, so no more backfiring!

Thank you! I have had a hard time getting anything done on the car lately because the weather in jersey sucks! I don't have a garage and so most of the work has to be done in the elements. I'm sure alot of us are firmiliar with that. Its been an average of 30 something degress and tonight we are supposed to get at least 8 inches of snow. great

but i will continue to post progress. I am waiting for the ez electric fan mounts to arrive, just some zip ties with washers. once i get them mounted to the radiator i post pics and start working on mounting the rad.

Yeah it would probably take flight at 160 and I dont need to go that fast. I am going to rebuild the exhaust man because i am a dumbass and should not have used 2.5" tubing. I have 2" to rebuild with. And also i am not going to route the exhaust under the motor I will keep it on the same side. the motor is mostly ready its just the body thats waiting for love. Its been along time since I've been here. I've gotten alot done with the body and paint. And also got the motor running. Right now I have the header dumping into one muffler. Its horribly loud. So I need to put another muffler on it.

There is alot more I need to update you on I don't have time at the moment but I will do it soon.

Its good to see it go. And it looks like it goes like a bastard too, if the youtube videos give any idea of reality. It looks like its still pretty well stripped down though, no glass yet, etc. Light=fast.
Looking at your carb and distributor setup, it just reminds me of the ongoing megasquirt tuning issues I've been having. My 913B is running ok, but not as well as yours, or so it seems. Nice job, man. Keep it going.
