What's it take to install a Rotary Interact Reply Quote Report To Mod Last Posts Ignore User Global Ignore Whisper This was a question asked on the STF I'll post my answer here,hope this answers some general questions. Anyone else who's done this feel free to add or discuss what they have done. Things needed to install a Rotary engine in a '72 Super Beatle= 1-Rotary Engine 2-Rotary Engine Automatic Tranny counterweight 3-Kennedy Adapter(flywheel,trans adapter) 4-VW Clutch=throwout bearing,disc,press plate 5-6 Volt VW starter 6-6 Volt starter bushing 7-Bolts and nuts for Mazda flywheel,VW clutch, 8-VW engine to tranny nuts and bolts 9-Crossmember for front mount on Rotary engine==(I used steel tube welded to Mazda front mount and all-thread hooked to the bumper brackets) 10-Custom exhaust piping and muffler(flange from Mazdatrix and stainless exhaust pipe,Magnaflow muffler(must use stainless tubing due to high(2000 degrees) exhaust temp.Mufflers and routing your choice.Mine curves under the tranny and comes out under right rear fender. 11-Custom piping for water to and from radiator(muffler shop ran mine) 12-Hoses from radiator and engine to water pipes 13-Radiator(I used a Mazda 3-row radiator from a RX-7 that had a Auto tranny)mounted in the front with vent where super beatle louvers used to be. 14-Fabricate throttle linkage(I used Mazda throttle cable spliced to VW cable and small L-shaped bracket to hold cable. 15-Wiring -from VW to Mazda(Use two manuals-VW and Mazda and just hook it up ,LOL) 16-Gas line hookup(Mazda style carbs use a return line-I used stock VW gas line for return and ran new 5/16 steel gas tubing under car along pan bolts-schools out on need for return line-you decide) 17-Optional at extra cost=Modified carbs,special muffler,MSD ignition,Turbos,fuel injection,etc=how much money you want to spend ? 18-Transmission=I used the stock tranny,cause its what I had.Choices are many- Type 1 bug,Type 2 bus,Porche etc. 19=Oil cooler(Rotaries must use a oil cooler,I used the stock early style cooler with the stock hoses,mounted the cooler on the rear panel below the engine cover with a small fan blowing thru it..Your choice on what cooler and where to mount. 20-Do research on Rotaries,forums,web sites,etc.Lots of info out there. Questions ? --- '72 Super Vert w/12A Rotary,Yaw Carb,custom exhaust w/Magnaflow muffler, stock tranny (no burnouts).

One bit of usefull info I found out was the OMP (Oil Metering pump). You have to either modify this or run pre-mix if you change the carb for a non-standard model. without it, the engine siezes up! It tells you how to remove the "Rats nest" (what they call all the emissions junk on top of the engine) etc, etc

Ever seen the price of new apex seals or housings?

Will share experiences. 1 RX7 13B engine. 1 Remanufactured shortblock. Kennedy adapter. Dellorto Carb and 2 Racing Beat intakes. (one for 12A one for 13B) Flywheel. Counterweight. etc. Everything you need. Was my everyday car for 5 years. Super reliable. Put over 90,000 miles on car. No need to premix! I have an IDA carb that doesn't even have a vacuum port, but it did have a float boal drain. What to do with this is put a hose barb where the floatbowl drain is and connect your oil metering pump to that. That way the oil metering pump automatically premixes the oil and fuel for you! Works great and I have been running like this for over a year. Do not put your oil metering pump connection in the intake manifold, it will suck oil into your intake all the time and make for a very smokey engine. --- For more information on stuffing a Mazda Rotary engine in a Bug, go to my website at http://www.geocities.com/zenjoe/vw.html

The manual trans cars have the rear counterweight built into the RX flywheel which is why it wont work with the VW converted flywheel. The autos have a bolt on counterweight.

But I have not seen or heard any pros or cons about it. Do you recomend a course of action how to accomplish this? I have a few ideas just want to know if I am on the right track. Would rather run the oil cooler up front or under the other side of the seat. Does the smaller civic radiators work well with a rx7? Brother has a civic and the radiator does its job and is small. A 13B will fit if you dont mind trimming the apron a bit. Overall it's only 1/2" longer than the 12A.

Oh and im running a holly. do i n eed just one line going into a vac? or do i need to run both into van lines. and.... what vacume line? haha any? im getting close to this step.
