From what I understand the 2.2 and 2.5 Subaru engines are an easy conversion as far as the minimal amount of cutting needed to get the engine, radiator, and such into the car. At the moment I have a 1967 bug that was my daily driver until it was rear ended at a red light. The engine and tranny were trashed and this has opened up possibilities. I plan to rebuild from the ground up but a couple things I'm not sure of are what Subaru engine would be best for my bug? As well as what tranny would be best to handle the amount of HP it'll generate? Also what kind of upgrades will be needed elsewhere to handle the conversion? If it'll help I plan on using the car more as a driver than for racing but I'd like to keep that option viable. I'd also like to note that I'm not much of a mechanic so this is going to be a learning experience. Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Jon

2.0 and 2.2 seem to be the mos popular, i got a twin turbo 2.0 from japan which most bug lovers dont get because you do have to cut the back to make it fit, but im not a bug lover just a bug user! I had to cut the back pretty good not only to fit in depth but also width, nothing you cant handle with a sawza or cutting wheel. See what you can get for cheap than plan your attack on that. Good Luck, Oh yeah sometimes it takes forever to get a response on this site

Jon,
Keep in mind with the ebuaru motors, if you want to minimize fabrication and make it a better fit you have to purchase one of the SOHC engines. (EJ22 and later model EJ25's for example) the DOHC engines fit but do require cutting and fabrication work. My advice to you is to steer clear of the DOHC because you are doing this as a learner project you dont want to take on something beyond your means.

Hemi- If I start out with a clapped out baja, would I still need to hack away at the bodywork or is it probably clearanced enough for a DOHC Suby powerplant? Thanks.

Im purchasing a sterling kit car here soon, and an 07 WRX turbo is planned for the power plant, I can buy complete engines with all the goodies on them. What else do I need to know for the install? Im going to mate this up to a porsche 901 transmission. This will give me the 5 speed Im lookking for without spreading tranny parts all over the highway when I step on it.
Id be interested in all the electrical mechanical stuff needed.
Please post info and links.
Thanks
Also how difficult is this swap? what needs to be of concern during the install, and to keep the motor properly cooled? My car already had a radiator in it from a Removed V-6 that was in it. As well as all the plumbing for it.
