Do you tell people that you are a gold miner?

Do you tell people that you are a gold miner? I have been wondering lately if that is a good idea. Particularly with the down economy and more people getting desperate. I wonder if the information reached the wrong ears and somebody gets the idea that you have gold laying around your house like candy, it could get ugly. Anybody else have such thoughts or am I off in left field?
I have been trying to come up with a name for a possible mining company and description for the casual inquirer that doesn't put you or your family in jeopardy. Any thoughts?

I tell some people that "I specialize in the removal of heavy metals from the environment" Or that "I study heavy metal distribution patterns in the environment"

Works for most closed minded liberals and college students.

My response would be: What good could possibly come from telling people?

I like to err on the side of caution.

accentcl,

If the question comes up in conversation I simply answer that I'm a Gold Miner. If anyone ever asks where I store my Gold, I just answer "safety deposit box at the bank".

Never a problem.

My answer is "I'm a gold prospector and not a very good one. I don't find much gold". I can say that truthfully.

Re: Do you tell people that you are a gold miner?

I have never hesitated to tell people that I am am a gold miner. In fact I often find a way to bring it up if I think I am talking to someone who might oppose it or be on the fence about it. Not to be an ass but to try and educate them. No one has ever asked where I keep my gold but if they did I would simply say it's next to the Colt.

I went to the Sportsman's show recently. A guy in a booth wanted me to sign a petition trying to block the pebble mine in AK. I listened then started asking why the miners had fewer rights than the fishermen. He said because the mines can be so destructive. I pointed out that fishermen are the only users who intentionally try to kill fish then pointed out all of the things in his boot that were a result of mining. He got real quiet.

Bottom line is, if you start being shy about talking about what you do, pretty soon it will be taboo to talk about it and later it will be banned.

Speak up ...say it loud and say it with pride!

Re: Do you tell people that you are a gold miner?

what got me thinking about this was a local coin dealer and his wife were taken at gun point at their home. Two stayed with the wife at the house while one went with the husband to the store to clean it out. The husband drove his vehicle into the side of a police substation on the way to the store. Two of the 3 perps were arrested, and no one got hurt. But they were very lucky.

Re: Do you tell people that you are a gold miner?

I don't tell people I'm a gold miner because first, I wouldn't want people to think I'm a Cheechako from Oregon who doesn't know a gold mine from a hole in the ground and second, it's not the job that pays my bills. I sometimes mention I have gold claims and then regret that I called them "gold" and try to remember to call them "mining" claims in the future. Having gold claims sounds like your rich. I get enough of that mistaken impression when people find out I own an airplane (which incidentally is why Iím not rich... $9 a gallon for avgas in McGrath!).

Walt,
We are gonna cut a landing strip in at Ottertail Ck. so you can come and visit. Beer will be on chill in the creek next to the frozen dive crew.

I tell people I am a miner. But I also tell them it is what I get poor at.

I have used the "I have gold claims" when I get a bout of low self esteem..........especially around a good looking girl  Then I introduce myself.

Re: Do you tell people that you are a gold miner?

I usually say "Yes I'm a prospector" and hand them a vial with about 9$ worth of gold in it and tell them "it took me all day to make that but someday I will find a nugget". That usually puts a stop to the conversation. It's the truth for flood gold on top, its the cracks in the bedrock that have flake and flour gold pockets. Reported once was one that produced 3 oz. Can't wait for spring.

I tell people that ask, I AM A GOLD MINER.

I don't make excuses. I don't apologize. I don't sugar coat it because I don't have to.

Gold mining is an interesting thing to do. It always begs lots of interesting questions from people. I meet people from all walks of life that are fascinated by the subject. I show them gold. It's my gold. It came from the ground. There's more gold where it came from too! I tell them anyone that wants to can go do the same thing I have done. I will even help them to understand how they can find gold!

I explain the things we know. It isn't easy. It is hard work. It takes research. It requires tools and the knowledge of how to use them.

In the end, if you are successful, you can have your own gold!

Me too!

I don't want to lie to them so I tell them I am a prospector. Even when I had several claims I wasn't really a miner. Mining is work! Prospecting is fun!
