There's Gold In Them Thar Hills

A friend recently found this coarse gold in a 10-day trip to the Kenai Peninsula, Ak. About 4oz total. He probably wouldn't like me advertising the exact location, but I will say it was on a registered active mining claim. He said each vial was a day's take, as he made a "cut" from one side of the stream to the other. As he got into the main paystreak the amount of gold increased, as shown by the two vials on the bottem of pic.

Nice!

That's a pretty nice take. Do you know what size dredge he was running?

Very inspirational pic Marshall!!!
I haven't been out at all this year, but the last of the seasons company leaves in 2 weeks so I hope to get out then.

Re: There's Gold In Them Thar Hills

Your Photo peaked my intrest.
Found my way to the Alaskan Outdoor Journal which has an Article on Hope Ak area and Gold prospecting.
Then goggled for a place to stay, Bear B & B said all areas are closed and Rangers are giving tickets like water.

Which is accurate?

Are Ressurection and the other 2 Creeks really closed tto Recreational prospecting?

The Hope rec area is open to dredging from May 15 to July 15. After July 15 it is open only to panning, sluicing, and metal detecting, to the best of my knowledge. There are other areas on the Kenai open to dredging all year, such as Bertha Creek and Spokane Creek.

Re: There's Gold In Them Thar Hills

What are the other two streams they talk about? Resurrection and 6 mile are anadromous streams and only open from May 15 to July 15th which is flood season. Resurrection has a small Rec area for people to play in, the Forest Service doesn't want anyone using highbankers or digging in the banks and the Habitat division doesn't want anyone messing with the water outside the window in fear that you might disturb some of the fry. 6 Mile's rec area starts around the Canyon Creek bridge and goes downstream for about 5-6 miles but once again Habitat doesn't want anyone messing around in the water outside the window. The Kenai River Center is tweaking the rules to fit into their Greenie agenda without public knowledge such as they just squeezed a new rule in the dredging application where no dredging of exposed gravel bars on these 2 streams is permitted and they now have a "Hand Tools" permit. Micro managing at it's best, when I asked why they are trying to shut down mining on the Penninsula they said they weren't but 3 times now I've heard them say that just "gold panning" can cause mass destruction so they need to regulate it. I have been working with a couple of the Habitat people trying to educate them on the truth but it's an uphill battle.

Salmon is king and everything else is way down the list of importance.

Thanks for all the info. Seems like a lot of confusion as the B & B lady said - NO recreational at all. maybe she is a Greenie. Check out the Alaska Outdoor Journal. Gold Panning on the Kenai Peninsula for more details. I will go back and print off and read it more thouroughly. Thanks again Tom Two Socks

Re: There's Gold In Them Thar Hills

Okay, now I know what you're talking about.. That Gold Panning guide is actually a booklette done up by the Alaska Miners Association, BLM, Forest Service and I think the DNR had a part in it to help people know where to go. Now the Kenai River Center is changing the rules as they feel fit without telling anyone. So now people who are thinking they are following the rules can get approached by Mr. Trooper and get a fine. There has already been multiple letters to the governor by miners and the Alaska Miners Association is trying to correct the problem. Fortunately for us up here we have a governor that is pro-mining, we were just talking about this in our AMA meeting yesterday.

Is it possible to get the AOJ to pull the Article as it is very , very misleading, to say the least. Thanks for your response. helps to clear it up. Tom 2 Socks Guess I'll head to Chicken in 2012 ; the people seem to be a lot friendlier!
