Prospecting with post hole digger?

Just a reflection from Gold Rush 2 on discovery channel.Ive seen several different types of core sampling drills, and even have used a spoon end to grab a sample from a certain depth. But really? using a churning action will drop the heavies down if the material is dry. from watching Todd and jack and their driller, fill his bucket from what the screw brought up was close to being accurate,ha ha I suppose, but wouldnt bet on any of those test results. Good Gold to all, Dan

Re: Prospecting with post hole digger?

Haven't seen the show but having tried a 6" power posthole digger in my area (cobble and boulders), it is like wrestling a monkey. I get beat up, accomplish nothing and I annoy the monkey.

The auger section needs to be run through a pipe to keep the material inside the flutes otherwise you get exactly what you mentioned; partial loss of the sample. Below the water table it would be much worse.

I tend to think the bucket drills mentioned by Steppegold are the way to go. Just not man-portable.

I am a big fan of a thorough sampling system. But for portability, I'm stuck with a #2 shovel.

I wouldn't really trust the results of the drill for quantifying the gold, but for measuring the depth to gravel and to bedrock and indicating the existence of 'some' gold,.......I think it could be pretty valuable.

Frankly, I wonder why they spent $4000 on a dozen shallow drill holes when they have one or two excavators sitting on-site. I spent good money on a drill, but quickly learned that the hoe is a better testing tool. The drill has an advantage in material too deep for the excavator, but they could have taken a dozen samples with the shovel for 1/4 the cost,...............and possibly recovered enough gold in the process to offset some of the expense.

At 15' depth, I can take a 10yd sample of bottom gravel with the hoe in about the same amount of time is takes to get a 100# sample with the drill. IF it's decent gravel and the drill sample shows $1, the same hole will produce $350 using the excavator and the info gained is more accurate. Drilling is for deep gravel or for people who don't already have hoes.

Ya gotta remember...Its a "Reality" Show...Therefore there is no intelligence used, only scripts.

We cut our cable to the bare minimum sos I don't get discovery any more. I found the show entertaining (in a sick/twisted sort of way) last year. Last year someone had links to the shows, anybody know where to catch the shows on the puter this year? HH Mark

Yes, Exactly my point Kaveman, They do stupid things so that people watch, I dont have any computer links to you tube videos of the show,Im sure theyll be up for entertainment purposes.Using you rown shovel and pan to prospect with would be too much of a stretch for Todd and Jack since neither understand the word "prospect". Using their own excavator and their own mini washplant trommel deal, would of saved them thousands, and they could continue prospecting while others mine(theyve got 7 guys for a 2 man operation)In my camp Everybody works all the time or they dont get paid. Its that simple,The reality show pays these guys up front plenty of money to survive now so they can have more drama to the show. they all seemed to have put on weight since last year too. Good Gold to all , dan
