I have been reading this forum for some time. Very interesting! Been in project management for last 7 years after getting out of Army. Make a good living but am so bored. Looking to get back to some physical labor and the outdoors.
Does anyone need a helping hand this summer. Would love to learn to see what it takes. Willing to work for free for this experience. If all goes well would like to see if I could support myself doing this. I have some money saved but not sre what sort of investment it would take to get up and running. Kind of rambling now. If anyone is interested in some dedicated labor that works for nothing let me know. Wouldn't leave job yet but could put in about a month mid summer. |

I am guessing that a vehicle would be needed. Would probably fly and rent a truck. Probably costs 800-1000 in gas each way. Flight and rental would make more sense.
Never been to Alaska, is Fairbanks a pretty typical city where truck rental wouldn't be an issue? |

Fairbanks is far from typical to someone from the lower 48. I am sure after you live there awhile it is just like everywhere else. However the one time I visited in 2009 I was pleasantly surprised to find it looked like a 1940s or 50s town with a sprinkling of modern stores for good measure. I am sure most everything that you will need can be found if you have enough time. A much better way would be to continue the way you are going with your computer on line research. Put your plan together ahead of time and make as many arrangements in advance on line. Getting a local miner to work with is the best plan.
