Dredge / trommel combo ( 06:18:37 SatApr 8 2017 )

Hi, I got an idea in the morning while packing for goldpanning... What about dredge/trommel combo? I saw some trommels with suction hose, but still highbankers. But what I mean is regular floating dredge with trommel drum above sluice. At first I know two disadvantages: 1) more mechanical parts to make problems, of course... 2) The gravel with water must be lifted a few inches more, but not much, maybe 3" would be enough.
Advantages: Less rocks in sluice, smoother run of material in sluice, zero stone jams in sluice...
What is our opinion?

Yes, that would work - but only if the dredge portion can lift the slurry high enough to place it in the drum of the trommel.

Another disadvantage would be that an engine would have to be used to power the water pump for the dredge and a second, small engine, would have to be used to rotate the trommel's drum.

Two engines needing fuel and maintenance.

Honza,

It's a good idea. Examples go back to the original bucket-line dredges.

It is possible to add a trommel to a commercial suction dredge. I don't see a practical solution for small recreational suction dredges with minimal lift. Commercial dredges with high volume trash pumps can move material to a trommel within certain limits.

There's a thread on this topic called "Dredge Question" that was started back on April 29th.
