Gas dredges in Calif.

I just read this on Drudge.

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D99TKTBG2&show_article=1

HAPPY CAMP, Calif. (AP) - People who want a modern-day piece of the California Gold Rush will have to do their prospecting the old-fashioned way.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill Thursday that temporarily bans miners from using gasoline-powered dredges to glean flecks of gold from river bottoms. The measure allows time for an environmental review to determine how much the popular form of small-scale mining harms salmon.

The new law is part of a long-standing campaign by the Karuk Tribe and environmental groups to restore salmon runs in Northern California.

About 3,500 permits are issued each year for suction dredge mining in California, where people come from around the country to search for raw gold.

Gold miners will still be able to use techniques like panning, but the new law halts the most effective prospecting method. :gonetoofar:

Re: Gas dredges in Calif.

a local non green biologist was talking on the radio and explained that 75% of the salmon smolts never make it out of the esturary because of predation from cormarants (a protected non native invasive species) and an over protected specy the marine mammals, the seals. at the mouth of the columbia river there is a man made island from dredge spoils its basically a buffet bar for puffins and other fish eater birds. common sense has nothing to do with goobermundt decisions though

Re: Gas dredges in Calif.

i don't understand this law. according to the article, what exactly what does 'temporary' mean? and when does fish & game have to be finished with their study? and if it's a temporary law, when does it expire?
and if the article is accurate as to the number of dredge permits issued, AND if they were all residents (which of course their not) that's $42 x 3500 or at least $147,000 stolen from the gold mining citizens of ca because their permits are now worth less thasn toilet paper.
