Nugget Shooting Beyond the Deserts...

Hi All,
I'm new to nugget hunting and living in Montana. I've found tons of info about how to hunt deserts and next to nothing on other areas. I was hoping you folks from Alaska could give me some tips on what to look for and how to work a more forested area with a detector.

Thank
-Joe

Re: Nugget Shooting Beyond the Deserts...

Hi Joe,

Well, it is pretty simple. With a VLF detector you are looking for locations where the nuggets are within a foot of the surface. With a Minelab PI I'd be looking for places where the nuggets are within two feet of the surface. For desert areas this is an easy task. In places like Alaska where half the state is swamp (did I say swamp - I meant wetlands!) the gold is just too deep.

So for much of Alaska where the gold is deep that means getting into old mine workings where they have excavated the deep material and brought it to the surface. Or uncovered deeply buried bedrock.

When going after virgin sites the key is shallow bedrock.

So a little research can save time. If I research a creek and I find the paystreak is 15 feet down, I know right away I need to get into old mine workings.

I know of many places in Alaska where the hills around known gold bearing streams have relatively shallow cover, and would like to spend time detecting those areas. But it is real long shot detecting and so would require a lot of time, patience, and a dose of luck. But really no different than hunting a patch anywhere. Put yourself in the right geology, and detect away.
