Brown bear scat can be easily identified by the jingle bells, chewed mace cans and jammed small calibre pistols mixed in with L.L Bean fabric remnants

Re: Charging Bear Killed in Alaska

It used to be we only saw brown/grizzlies maybe once every year or three out at the claims, or way out in the boonies. Now we see them commonly right at our home property and around town. Earlier this spring one (brown) walked through behind my shed 75' from the house. Then about a month ago another one went crashing through the woods about 100' from where I was working on a boat (in my yard). Scared the frog hair off of me. For whatever reason, bear numbers appear to be increasing on the Kenai Peninsula. I've taken to packing a .454 Casull if I have to work out in my yard after dusk...especially if our two little mutts are barking and growling at "something" in the woods...

Hi

Seam's people on this forum are always a day or so ahead of the news.
On our CBC news tonight they made mention that grizzlies are starving due to the very poor salmon returns this year.
Anybody out in bear country or near salmon streams and rivers should pay very close attention.

HUNGRY GRIZZLIES!!!! BAD!!!

Hell, I come across a brown bear this summer while out mountain biking on a trail right behind the cop shop in good ol' Anchorage. I have lived in Anchorage all of my life and have trompped around around the woods quite a bit and never came across one here in town. I think they are moving in towards and into town for the "easy life".

I am always out walking at Kincaid and at Conner Bog and have been for 31 years. I have never seen a bear of any kind in town. I have seen hundreds of moose and some wolves in those parks, but never a bear.

You saw a grizzly behind the cop shop in Spenard, elkawok?

No, off of tudor road on the "Tour de Anchorage" trail. It runs from over off Tudor back behind where the cop shop is back to Campbell airstrip. I come up to the top of a small rise in the trail and seen him right before a bridge that crosses part of the north fork of Campbell creek. When I first got a glimse of hime I though it was a dog at first, then I stopped and looked up all the way. My first though was "Holy @#$%%^&, it's a @#$$%^& bear!!!". I was probably about 75 yards away from him if even that far, I should go back to that spot and walk it off just so I know for sure. When he saw me he turned and ran off into the trees. I sat there for a moment, yelled at him and made some noise, then I sat and listend to see if he was trying to circle back around me in the trees (I have heard that they will do this). At that point I turned around and rode back out to the road only stopping to shoot a quick text message to my wife to let her know what was going on.

I have lived here all my life and only seen 3 bears on my outings. Never though one would be a brown bear right here in town!

I'd say his dogs did not earn their Kibble that day... I would have thought that they should have alerted to the bear's presence or charged when it became a threat.
