Drozd review

Received my Drozd today.Im impressed like others who have noted the quality of the airgun. It is made pretty tough and isnt like your average airgun from the sporting goods store. It ate 30 rounds very fast! The speed loader it comes with is really nice. Im using Nimh rechargeable batteries which will save me plenty. Im going to try to get some video of it in action with my Mavica camera. I bought mine from AirgunDepot btw. It took about a week, which is good considering they got some in Tue,and I ordered it the previous FRi.

I just got mine today, and I am REALLY impressed. Basically I have one word to describe this weapon is WOW!!! The first thing I looked at in the owner's manual was the exploded drawing to see how it was designed. I assumed and expected that the fire control system would be some type of motor/gear drive unit. I was totally suprised to see that the fire control system is designed around an electronic solenoid (electromagnet). I was similarly impressed with the design of the gas system, which uses an expansion chamber, which means that you don't see the rapid decrease in velocity as the CO2 cylinder cools down, which has been the bane of other fast firing guns using the 12 gram cylinders in the past . Also, while I haven't yet chronogrphed the actual velocity, I does seem considerably higher than the 330 fps that is listed in the specs. I have an idea why this is so. Being that the gun has a rifled barrel, I think that the velocity listed is for lead BB's, which are quite a bit heavier than steel BB's, and while common in Europe, are virtually never seen in the US. Given the design of this gun, and Izhevesky Mekhanichesky Zavod's reputation, I wonder if this gun isn't derived from some "gadget" they made for either the KGB, or GRU. And incidentally, during the sxties and seventies theKGB was into designing air weapons for some of their covert units. My advice, if any one is thinking about getting one of these, do it now, while they are still available, as I think that soon these may no longer be imported, and also may be seeing some unwelcome attention from the ATF, even though they are still classified as airguns. You also might want to consider buying two, and putting one aside as a possible investment, as I think the value of these will skyrocket once they are no longer available.

Some very good points and more comprehensive review than mine.Bravo! I believe it will be banned eventually, in part to its well built ways. The Makarov co2 pistol which is made by the same company is no longer being exported here. Youre absolutely right about dropoff in power. You dont notice it as much although when the batteries ran down I noticed significantly less power. Also ive been getting into the habit of removing the co2 without draining it a little more which could be bad for the seals. From now on Im going to give it a couple 6 bursts before reloading the co2. Never could justify spending this kind of dough on a good airsoft (Tokyo Marui) Gun, but for a Russian made Auto bb it is well worth it!

As I use this gun more and more, I am more and more impressed with it. I finally got a chance to chronograph the gun, and every one's impressions that it is faster than the listed velocity are quite right, it is shooting quite a bit faster. Here are the results. Chronograph used was a Chrony model F-1 Manufactured by Shooting Chrony Inc., and is accurate to +- 5%. The temperature was 86 degrees, and the gun was kept in the shade until the actual firing was done. The chonograph was placed approximatly 3 feet from the muzzle. After the gun was charged, I let it set for approximatly 5 minutes to let the gas temperature stabilize, then fired a couple of shots to clear the valves.
Shot #1 509 fps
Shot #2 516 fps
Shot #3 512 fps
Shot #4 506fps
Shot #5 510 fps
Avg 510.6 fps
I fired the rest of the clip let the gun set for about 5 minutes then fired 5 more. Velocity was down a bit.
Shot #1 472 fps
Shot #2 468 fps
Shot #3 475 fps
Shot #4 467 fps
Shot #5 469 fps
Avg 470.2 fps
After firing the rest of this magazine, and following the same procedures, the first five shots of the third magazine were still in the 400 to 425 fps range. Also, after firing the Drozd, I used my Beeman P-1 pistol as a check, as I am very familiar with I'ts velocity, Using Crossman wadcutter pellets, it was shooting between 535-550 fps, which is it's normal range.

I forgot to mention in my last post that the BB's used for the chronograph test were Daisy Quick Silver brand, and the CO2 capsule was made by Daisy as well. Also the only criticism I have about the gun is that the space for inserting the COs cylinder is rather tight, and I find that the CO2 cylinders reguire a bit of manipulation to get them in. Does anyone else have this problem?

You need to make sure the lever on the bottom of the
mag is pulled all the way back. sometimes i will pull back
on the lever while inserting the CO2, this allways works.
All i have used is the crosman CO2s, In some past post
someone said you need the ones with the flat dimple on
the ends ? I got mine at walmart in 40 count pack.
Ive bulk fitted several guns with paintball tanks but the
Drozd seems to be a small tube CO2 tube only gun.

Something I highly reccommend doing is lubing the seals every so often. I found some paintball gun oil. PMI brand synthetic paintball gun oil. Two spots on the magazine.
1. At the top the valve seal
2.Where the co2 connects theres an O ring
[A drop and then swap excess with q-tip.]

For the outside of the gun mag and barrel I use Beeman MP-5 oil.

WILL TRADE DROZD!!
I Also have one of the new Drozd guns & I also own a Strafer I got almost 2 years back. At first I was VERY IMPRESSED AT THE DROZD, the styling is cool & the engineering is top notch for russian made. I don't understand the yellow color though, but it is like the Ferrari of airguns.. The downside is the lack of a really good full auto burst... My strafer I will admit is sort of ugly & simple compared to the Drozd but once you squeeze off a 300-400 round burst NOTHING YET has ever come close to what my Strafer can do.
so if anyone out there has a Strafer they want to sell/trade I WILL TRADE my almost new lightly used Drozd & $200 Cash for a Strafer :sad:

Hey Everybody,

I just got my Drozd from airgundepot.com and like most of the opinions Ive read, it rocks! So far no complaints other than I wish it had higher BB capacity. I asked airgun depot about availibility of additional clips, and they said they just got their first order for a bunch in. They are in the process of making them orderable on their site, so y'all may want to check there in a couple days. They added the clips to my order at my request so you probably dont need to wait until its orderable on the site if you are impatient like me. I cant wait till the extra clips get here so I can make some serious swiss cheese out of my cans....

Hi.

New to this forum.

I have been researching the Drozd. My local gun shop chronographed one and got velocities very similar to yours.

I believe the reason for the higher-than-expected velocities has to do with using steel instead of lead BB's. My understanding is that the manual suggests using lead BB's and I would guess that their spec'ed velocities are for lead BB's. Being lighter, the steel BB's would be expected to travel faster, and I believe that is why you are getting the numbers you are.

I don't think an larger co2 canister would work. The nomal bb co2's have a way hight psi, than a paint ball large tank. So even if you did hook one up. The bbs would only come out at about 150 fps. Because the air chamber built in the gun could charge the psi fast enough to keep up with the fire rate. (but I could be wrong) Now with Paul Pipper's design, in conjunction with the the paint ball co2 tanks, the psi flow operates on a totally different system, not unlike water blasting out a hose, once you turn it on. While the Drozd operates on a very quick ON of OFF pre-metered spurts of co2.

The only way a person can hook up a paint ball co2 tank to this gun with cheap mods without modifing the whole gun is to... Take a usedl bb co2 cartridge, buzz a hole in the side to accomendate a airhose attachment *the air hose attachment would have to be welded on** (you would also have to buzz a notch in the plastic flip cover in the drozd so the airhose attachment would slip thru. Now if you ever have the STRAPHER MACHINE GUN BY PIPPER INC. They have a rig (paintball tank with hose attachments that can plug and play right in to thier machine gun. The tank is held in place by a water bottle waist belt. The shop hose comes off the tank, and plug right into the side of the airhose attachment in the gun) Same thing with the DROZD.

By welding the male airhose attachment on the side of the used bb co2 cartridge, the cartridge can be fit into the gun, and used to transfer the co2 gas from the paintball tank to the gun, without any major mods.

As long and you turn the valve "on" on the tank, you will have a constant psi flowing into the gun, and with the gun's electric firing system, you can blast the hell out of anything without running out of gas, you just have to re-load your ass off with the bb's)

Pardon any spelling errors of typo's, or bad grammer. If anyone does this mod, I would like to know if it works...

Hey Valkari, Thanks for the info re: modifying the drozd. It shoots great and accurate exept for the last few shots in the 30 round mag, Velocity is lost and therefore accuracy. I might get 5 more shots out of a freshly loaded mag using whats left of the co2 from the previous 30 rounds. I now just blank fire the remaining co2 and load a fresh co2 with each 30 round mag. Just a waste of $$$. Other than that it is a lot of fun. Thanks again for your post. MA.

Looking for a good holster for the Drozd. Was looking at a shoulder rig, but that would be too goofy. I was thinking about a leg rig, like in Blade, but cannot find the right one. Anyone have experience with this (ps, looking at paintball rigs, because these things are hella-huge compared to real guns)

I'm thinking about trying this idea. I'm new to BB Machine guns. You say that the CO2 won't work with the larger paintball canister but then say it may work later by I guess using the Strapher system?
How does the Strapher system work?
Sounds like you need something between the tank and the modified CO2 cartridge to boost the pressure since you say the pressure would be too low. I just don't see how it is possible to boost air pressure without an air compressor.

I have been working with holsters for my Drozd for a couple of months now. The classic leather cowboy is always an option. I developed a clear plastic one that looks really robocop.
