AOL and logging in?
We have several members who are having a hard time accessing our board. The only ones that seem to be having trouble are using AOL. We've suggested all of the standard solutions...delete temp files, check computer date and time, check privacy settings, but nothing has worked. Has anyone else noticed a problem with AOL users being able to access their board? Does anyone have any other suggestions that may help?

Hi SuzyMc  What exactly happens when they try and view your board?

I've applied to join your board

Re: AOL and logging in?
I just approved your membership Nick, thanks!

She can see the main page, but only by clicking on a link that I sent to her by email and even then she cannot get into any forums or her user cp.

Otherwise, she can't even get the main page to load...just a blank screen and then after a long wait a "page cannot be displayed" error message.

Thanks for your help!

Re: AOL and logging in?
Nick,
I just tried logging in as one of the members who is having problems and wasn't able to from my computer either, so maybe it doesn't have anything to do with AOL...

Ignore that last post Nick...I was just able to log in under her username, but she is still unable to get in.

Re: AOL and logging in?
Ahh, thanks SuzyMc

Not sure if this is whats causing it or not, but i've just had a look at your boards source code, and its missing two important HTML tags at the bottom. Could you try copy and pasting the two codes below at the very bottom of the Footer box in your boards Edit Board Template screen to see if it'll work for me?

Code:

</body></html>

Re: AOL and logging in?
Hmmm...not sure how the HTML code was lost, but we'll fix it.

I'm not sure that is what was causing the problem though, because they were all able to get in last night and things are running smoothly for everyone so far today.

I really have a feeling that it had something to do with AOL...it was the only common denominator.

Thanks again for all of your help! :thankyou:

Re: AOL and logging in?
Nick, we have more problems...

Our other admin backed up the board a few days ago and there were at least 2 other backups at that time. She went in just now and there were not any backups for our board! Any idea what happened? She noticed it when she was editing the HTML coding as you suggested and thought she should also do a backup. She double checked the HTML codes after doing the backup, but they were gone again!

Do you suppose we have gremlins???

Thanks Nick! We also noticed that the "newest member" isn't showing up either. Not a big deal though...we are a private board and don't get many new members, but something is causing some problems somewhere...

Re: AOL and logging in?
No problem

Do you currently have the 'Use Dynamic Registration?' & 'Enable Auto-Member On Dynamic Registration?' features enabled on your board? If not, if you enable them in the Edit Board Settings screen in your boards Admin Center, the Newest Member feature should reappear

Hi SuzyMc

I've asked BbBoy for you, and he's asked, not only the backups disappeared, but also the changes to the HTML she made?

The backups that were done last Friday and Saturday have held, but the HTML changes that you suggested did not take.

You're welcome, Nick and thank you for all your help with this!

Just to let you know...our AOL members are still having problems off and on. We have passed on your suggestion that they contact AOL to see if there might be a problem on their end.

Re: AOL and logging in?
No problem, SuzyMc :thumb:

Ahh, thats weird :ohwell: As it suddenly started happening to a few members, it sounds like its being caused by something on their end rather than something on our end i'm afraid, we haven't changed any codeing recently which would cause something like that to happen :ohwell:

Re: AOL and logging in?
It looks like AOL isn't going to be of much help. One of our members just reported back..."I wrote AOL and they don't know what is going on, why I can get on some sites and not others".

Do you have any other ideas, Nick? :thankyou:

Ahh, i'll let BbBoy know that some members are still having a few problems accessing your board using AOL

I'm afraid i'm out of ideas of what could be causing the problems or how to fix it at the moment, sorry SuzyMc :ohwell:

I've asked BbBoy for your boards Edit Board Template problem, and he's asked, even if you change one bit of HTML right now (like adding something to the top) it doesn't stick? But you could change things before with no problems?

Re: AOL and logging in?
We rarely change anything on the main board, so I can't really say how things were acting before. We honestly didn't notice the problem until you suggested the HTML changes the other day.
I did add the suggested changes to the Footer box in the boards Edit Board Template screen again this morning
Code:

</body></html>

and so far it seems to be holding. I'll keep you posted on that...

On another note...we had a member, who is an AOL user, return from a 2 week vacation the other day and she is also reporting problems accessing the board. :ohwell:

Thanks again for all your help with this! :thankyou:

Hmm, very strange :ohwell: Does it only happen on your board? Or does it happen to other boards on the BbNetwork as well?

That was one of the first thing I tried when the problem first started...I emailed them URL's to several BBboard's (all on different servers) and they couldn't access any of them.

Re: AOL and logging in?
Thanks Nick. I got this message from one of our AOL members this morning...

I had problems getting in again this morning. I shut down my computer and tried again. I got right in!

I don't know if that "solution" works for all AOL users or not and I don't mean to suggest that restarting their computer every time they want to access our borad is a solution, but maybe it will give you some insight on how to fix the problem.

All morning -- same issue. It has temporarily cleared up again.

At this point, it would be great if a webmaster could address this problem. It's affecting many people...people who are paying for a service.

Thanks.

Hi SuzyMc  NYC_Gal

I've asked BbBoy again for you, and he's certain that it really must be a problem on AOL's side, not BbBoard's. We didn't change anything to make it work right again, so AOL must have. They just need to change it again, by the sounds. BbBoy has also asked if you got a reply from AOL yet?

Re: AOL and logging in?
We did suggest that our members who use AOL contact them for help. So far only one has received a reply from AOL and they were of little or no help. This is what that member said...

I wrote AOL and they don't know what is going on, why I can get on some sites and not others. Usually if I turn off the computer and turn it back on, it resets itself and I can get on.

That was several days ago and the others are still waiting for replies from AOL.

I agree with you Nick...I'm certain that it has to be a problem with AOL. None of our other members have had any problems at all, only AOL users. Thank you so much for all of your time and efforts to correct the problem from your end though...I really appreciate it!

Ahh :ohwell: We're positive that the problem is on AOL's side, as we've not changed any code/HTML recently :ohwell: I'm afraid i dont know what else to suggest, sorry SuzyMc :ohwell:
