Punctuation problems showing up on threads ( 13:25:51 FriFeb 2 2007 )

We have a FanFiction site and as of this morning there are quite a few stories posted there that have mysterious "?" marks when viewed on FireFox and upside down squiggles when viewed on IE where normal punctuation should be, which makes reading extremely ridiculous and difficult. I've checked several stories on several threads, some have been posted for months and months now (with no previous problems). It seems that only certain threads have been affected.

We would appreciate a speedy answer AND a speedy correction to this problem.

It looks normal to me in IE, I couldn't see any out of place "?" or squiggly lines at all. It must be a browser issue, I don't know if this is something we can fix or not because it's not coming up that way for me in IE6. Can you take a screenshot and show me what you're seeing Rosgmom?

In IE it appears to be alright now, although it wasn't alright in IE this morning; but in FireFox, which many of our readers use, this is what appears..

Is this only for some fics and not all? Like specifically are they curly type quotes or the slash style we have here? "" is differently interpreted then the curly looking quotes and that might be what the trouble is. Can you link more threads this happened in to see if we can spot a pattern Rosqmom?

Thank you for whatever it was that you did. Everything appears to be back to normal now. I have no idea how or why it happened as it did.

Several of our story threads have been locked since the end of last year because of Bboy's Spambot problem. Which is btw, something we might expect on a small, novice or free board, but not as an inconvenience we have to suffer through while we pay a fee for our website.
No, the problem this morning was something that affected the stories and threads randomly, both locked and unlocked threads on random browsers, which leads me to believe that it was/is a bug of some kind in your server.

Speaking of bugs, if you run a 'Search' through the posts on this Help board on both myself, Rosgmom and Deeboy's name, you will see that we have alerted you several times to our inability to make a serverside back up, as early as mid 2006.
We were promised again and again that the problem was being looked into, and then .. nothing at all. At a certain point we were looked over and forgotten, because to this day we still have no serverside backup nor did we hear another word from anyone in charge. This makes us very nervous with the amount of information stored at Fics4Fans, especially when strange and 'unexplainable' things such as this morning's problem arises.

What is it exactly that we need to do to again have backup?

The serverside backup issue is resolved now, you should be able to make those again. I am glad the problem with the punctuation was resolved as well, I did show the screenshot to BbBoy and he might have adjusted something on our end.
