crevicing danger and common sense... ( 18:53:58 SatMay 11 2013 )

I know most everyone on this forum knows this already, but there are dangers out there that we often overlook in our quest for the gold. Here is a short video about a danger I met while crevicing a couple of days ago at the K-15 claim.

Here is a whole other kind of danger there. This picture was taken in 2005, just about where your camper was a few days ago.

I was just packing away some of my last gear when a CHP officer stopped to speak with me. He warned me about walking around in the dark and wanted to be certain I was closing up my RV at night because the prior night he'd seen a cougar cross the road very near my RV.

Personally, I am always thrilled to see these creatures. I feel safer around them than I do around most people. The Happy Camp area is a GREAT place to see REAL wildlife. Those places are getting more and more rare. It is one of my favorite areas to visit; bugs, bears, cats, poison oak, and all. The beauty far exceeds the dangers.

True that Jim...I grew up in the mountains of Southern California but never did I understand natural beauty til I came up to Siskiyou...To think we can swim amongst the fish abd treasure hunt for a living if you put serious effort into it.
Be safe, and happy hunting....can't wait to span the waters of the Mighty K with the team in a few weeks here:doublethumbsup:

The big cats are out there. I ran into one across the Independence bridge, just up the road from where folks park to walk down to the upper claim. I didn't stick around long enough for pictures. He didn't make any threatening moves. So I slowly turned and walked back down the road, watching over my shoulder just in case. I had some comfort in that a couple just pulled up and parked.

Attacks on humans are rare, but you never know. Stay safe out there.

I was prospecting with two brothers on East Fork River in So Cal a few years back when they told me about a week long mining trip back in the Narrpws of East Fork when a bic cat gave them a two day stalk...needles to say..when they realized it...they hiked back in and cut the trip short...nothing like a good shot gun for peace of mind

That's good to know. We happened upon 2 scorpions on Indian Creek last season so we'll be on the look out for those, snakes and precarious rocks.

Thanks for the video.

I should add to my post about year rings because I know someone is going to say you can't tell age by rings. Yes, your right you can't. The Western rattlesnake typically sheds 3-5 times in its first summer and 1-3 times in subsequent years, on average.

I guess what I should have said was that snake had been around for awhile

Some of you may of seen the native jungle guys on a documentery a few years back. When trekking thru the jungle they wear "painted face masks" on the back of their heads so they appear to be watching and those big cats leave them alone. A couple years ago a cougar seemed pretty po'd that I was camping at O'Neill creek.
