Im new to gold mining and am going to happy camp in august, I have gold fever really bad, need to know is it possible to make a living dredging if you do things right sampling and so forth, or is it a pipe dream, I am going to try it with a 5" dahlke, I have saved money to cover 2 months of operation but have to leave my job in finance that I hate anyway cant get the time off to do this endeavour, I know also that fortune favors the bold. But have any of you been in this type of situation before you took the plunge into mining where the uncertainty of a regular paycheck was scary as hell and the voices of doubt were beating your ass up every 10 minutes, man i would really like some advice it is truly appreciated.

I wish you all the luck in the world. I also advise you to find another job you DO like, and try prospecting/mining part time. Take one of Dave's classes or try and team up with another experienced miner for a season. There ARE people out there making a living prospecting/mining but darn few making a good living.
Still - it CAN happen. Best of luck to you. |

If you had 30yrs of prospecting experience, I'd say there's a snowball's chance you could make a poor living for a time(if you're hard working AND lucky). Now is certainly an ideal time to try with the price of gold up, but as a newbie, I don't think so. It's a great hobby, but I've never heard of anyone actually making a fair living at it. I know a couple of very experienced dredgers who sorta make it work, but they're backed by some sort of retirement income that pays the bills no matter what.

Curious to know your age and physical condition. Are you prepared to possibly sacrifice your body to mining, gettin' old before your time, livin' on beans and cornbread, catchin' trout to feed your dog, unexpected LONG trips to town for parts and problems. Sure. be a gold miner. Good Luck.

Been there, done that. No chicken here (you'll be lucky to afford chicken.) Pipe dream? YES! Smoke another, brother, that's what got me where I am today. I just heard about some $16-20/hr. oil jobs in Oklahoma, w/ full bennies. NO WAY to make that dredging consistently. Anyone disagree?

Now you are talking smart. A good vacation is the best way to experience gold mining. If you are lucky and are able to make what you need, quit and stay. Otherwise enjoy a great hobby, have a good vacation and head back to the job that pays the bills.
