A couple months ago I spoke with Tony Stein and was told the following:

A person is required to have a free permit to mine/prospect for gold on Oregon beaches, the permit being available from the above 2 persons, at least.

Any recirculating, battery-operated 12-volt-type unit must be SELF-CONTAINED, period!!!

Of course, no gasoline-powered equipment.

Permits are valid for a requested area--you can't just travel around on a single permit.

Exactly how much movement up or down the beach is allowed on a permit was not made clear to me. Nor have I been told how many permits a person can obtain, etc., etc.....

You can also get a permit at Harris Beach State Park. Which is located on the North edge of Brookings.
