Beach mining in Oregon is regulated under the Oregon Parks & Recreation Department: Key staff Coastal Region Manager John Allen john.allen@state.or.us 401 SW 9th Street Newport, OR 97365 Voice: 541-265-8179 Fax: 541-265-9157 Washington Border to Yachats (Clatsop, Tillamook, Lincoln and Lane Counties) Tony Stein tony.stein@state.or.us 401 SW 9th Street Newport, OR 97365 Voice: 541-265-9871 Fax: 541-265-9157 Yachats to California Border (Lane, Douglas, Coos and Curry Counties) Calum Stevenson calum.stevenson@state.or.us 89814 Cape Arago Highway Coos Bay, OR 97420-9647 Voice: 541-888-9324 Fax: 541-888-5650 A couple months ago I spoke with Tony Stein and was told the following: A person is required to have a free permit to mine/prospect for gold on Oregon beaches, the permit being available from the above 2 persons, at least. Any recirculating, battery-operated 12-volt-type unit must be SELF-CONTAINED, period!!! Of course, no gasoline-powered equipment. Permits are valid for a requested area--you can't just travel around on a single permit. Exactly how much movement up or down the beach is allowed on a permit was not made clear to me. Nor have I been told how many permits a person can obtain, etc., etc..... * * * * * http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/RULES/oceanshores.shtml |

You can also get a permit at Harris Beach State Park. Which is located on the North edge of Brookings.
