I was wondering if any members have been out to the Gottville claim to do some prospecting. The tailings laid down from the derricks seem great for sluicing. Any reports good or bad would be great-thank you!

There is some gold left in the piles. You won't get rich but if you don't mind moving a lot of rocks the tailing piles will give you some gold.

Soon after we (the club)acquired the Gottville claim my mining partner (wife) and I drove around to the South side of the claims (now opposite the dredge/boat launch. We used a small 2 inch highbanker half way up a main tailing pile. Used our 'vac-pac' to help get what little soil you get that far up the pile, ran only three buckets of classified (1/2 inch) material and got pretty good color, small watermellon seed stuff. It's wicked working on a tailing pile of rounded stone at a steep angle....plenty sore feet and back...........sure wish the anti-dredging thing was resolved!! Have fun! Bill

In your request for more information on the Gottville claim I did a couple sample holes (on the far side from the highway) at the head of the gravel bar.
At about 12 inches I hit a thick clay layer, the material above the clay did show some color. I screened down one pan of material and found four small specks. I tried to dig through the clay but gave up. I went down about 12 to 16 inches and did not find another layer of gravel. The clay where I was working was very thick and sticky (could not break it up for panning). I moved downstream from the rock piles and did another sample. That area was very sandy and loose. I did not find any clay layer but did not find any color either. Like the other reply: Working the piles will take a lot of work to get enough material to work with. Good luck au_dreamer1218 |
