Mark Chestnut has passed the claims guide information off to me for the first three claims we are going to open on BLM lands in the South Umpqua drainage. I'm going to work on the three claims now and hope to have it to Jason Inks (our web master) this morning.
Maria is working on the new map. In the meanwhile, Mark has set up a KMZ file on Google Earth which displays all of the State Land areas and the new claims, along with the access points and related information. There is also an instructional link on how to make the KMZ file work. This KMZ file will go a long way to get you onto the new claims while we put the remainder together. |

I've downloaded the Access Guide and opened in Google Earth but do not see any data about claims or access, just the normal Google Earth stuff. The access guide shows up in My Places alright but the image hasn't any more claims or access information.
Thanks, Mike

Mike, did you read the instruction sheet provided on the KMZ download page? If not, please do so...
If so... There should be little "+" icons next to each claim; you can click on those icons to expand them -- then you can double click on the items to fly to those points. Let me know if you have any further problems, ok? John |

Anyone familiar with Days Creek? Nuggety or lots of fines?
Incredible work Dave. I have never been in a club that provided such detailed information on the claims. Kudos. Deadmans Creek looks promising as it probably hasnt been hit hard looking at google earth its pretty steep. Getting excited just lookin at the Google Earth locations. I will be up there toward the end of the season so I look forward to reports on where to dry camp with a 25' trailer near Days Creek and the gold reports. I have a Keene 5" (restricted nozzle to 4") with 8hp Honda just waiting to be let loose. Save some gold for me  Thanks, Don |

SoCalProspector --
I recently took a trip up to the Days Creek claim, as I was one of the "insiders" on this project. First of all, at the bottom of the claim is a decent place to camp -- a large work yard that USFS and the logging companies use as a gravel storage area. It is currently vacant and not being used, although there is a large gravel pile on the south side of the work yard. There is plenty of room for your 25-footer there. This yard is just past the bridge at the bottom end of the claim. There is also another access point about 100 yards upstream from this -- look for 2 boulders across a grown-over road. Access gets more difficult the further upstream you go, though. There is a "put-in" point on the creek-side of the gravel pile -- a short road goes to the creek there that has been used by water trucks filling up from the creek. It will take a bit of clean-up to launch a dredge there, but nothing very difficult. The other access point I mentioned will require packing your dredge in about 20 - 30 yards to the creek, due to the boulders blocking the road in. The creek abounds in fines; in 50 test pans up and down the creek, I recovered over 600 bits of color of varying size -- the largest being a bit over a millimeter in size. This was from the gravel bars; I did not sample in the creek itself, so I would say that the larger gold is going to be in the water. It shows a good deal of potential and, if I didn't have another deal in the works down here in Selma, I would he there now prepping my 5" Keene triple-sluice for opening day. John |

Thanks John, I'm sometime dumb as a rock / cobble. A lot of work was done on this. Great job.
Thanks to all, Mike

Dave, is it ok to high bank and sluice these new properties over the next 2 weeks? Maybe a little sniping.

Dave, will these claims be open to dredge for members during this season? I was planing on Dredging the Rouge but them claims look real nice! I'm hoping to find a good price on a membership and join the club.

mnts1234 -- Sluicing is fine, as long as you stay within the historic high water line. Same thing with highbanking. Where Oregon has a problem with highbanking is when you operate outside of the high water line -- that is not allowed unless you buy a pretty pricey permit for it.
YellowFever -- Yes. Dave has now published the claims, under the terms listed on the South Umpqua Access Guide. They are open to any New 49'er Member in good standing (dues current). So yes, you need to buy a membership in order to use the new claims; however, the Public Areas over on the South Umpqua river are open to anyone. John |

I took a drive to see the new claim at Days Creek yesterday and took a couple of pictures to show the current water level and to show a little of the creek. Just for the record, the water temperature was sixty degrees. I did not find anything in the few samples I took, but I was in a bit of a hurry and did not really sample the area well. Here are the pictures;

You have a good eye... That's exactly where it was taken.

Thanks, but it's not really a good eye -- I just have this knack of being able to remember terrain once I have seen it. Like (and I don't know if you noticed it) the pet graves on the rise just to the left of the road coming off the bottom side of the bridge -- in the "Y" between the two roads; a couple of crosses with a blue & silver child's windmill toy attached to one.
That was a skill I learned as a truck driver -- if I have ever been someplace to pickup or deliver, once I get within 1/2 mile of it again I know exactly how to get there again. And now, it comes in very handy in this new "recreational activity" of mine! |

J,
I would set a chair next to you and let my mind wonder with the sound of the babbling brook except I haven't found a way to get the gold to jump up into my pan yet!
