Sasha's return to the vet

Hi everyone
Thought the other thread was getting a bit long so I started this one.
Sasha pulled one of her stiches out yesterday and was dripping blood, so I had to get an appointment at the vet for her. The vet took out another as it was really tight. I have to bath it in saline water 3 times a day and she is now on a diffrent form of antibiotics as the fiirst lot were more for her mouth. The new one's are for skin and to stop infection. Poor thing has quite a hole in her leg!
Her results were in.
The cancer in her tummors are an agressive form and there is a 50/50 chance they will grow back. The lump in her leg was benine. They have not had word back from the Dick Vets about the holes in her jaw yet but the vet said that it's a diffrent kind of cancer to the tumors as they are in diffrent places (not linked to the tummors). She said that she has had dogs go through getting there jaws removed but they have been dogs with long noses.ie collies. She is concerned that it could affect her breathing with her having such a scrunched up nose.
I have decided not to put her through anymore surgery after talking to both Pat and Lorraine.
It would be diffrent if it was going to cure her but it isn't.
My plans for her now is to get this leg back to normal, give her lots of love and walks. As long as she isn't in pain then she will go on as normal. When the time comes to let her go, she will tell me! anyone that has been in this kind of possition will know what I mean.
I'm sure she will have years with us, but her diet is out the window. However long she has will be happy.
I couldn't have written this last night but I'm dealing with it now. Poor Derek phoned (from the gym) to find out what had happend, only to get me in floods of tears. He then took me for a pub meal so I didn't burn the tea!!!

Re: Sasha's return to the vet

Jacquie I am so sorry about the news, I cannot begin to imagine how you must be feeling right now.

I think you are right about the jaw, it's a big operation for something that isn't going to cure her, or probably even improve her life quality. What is the point of putting her (and you) through all that distress when you can be focussing on love and fun and enjoyment of life.

Sasha must have a fantastic guardian angel to have brought her to you at this point in her life, and I am glad for her that she has you and your family caring for her now, because I know there will be no happier, well loved dog on the planet!

You're right, when the time comes, she will let you know. Enjoy her, fuss her, play with her, and above all love her, all of which I know you are just the best at, and when the time comes, love her just that little bit more and say goodbye. But like you say, I am sure she has years with you yet!

She is a very lucky dog to have you. We are all here for you and will give you all the love and support you want or need from us. Sasha's story has touched us all I think, she epitomises what is both wrong and good in this world, she has gone from total neglect to complete and utter love and she deserves every second of it!

Lots of hugs from me and boxer love from Sasha!

I am so sorry... I don't even know what to say...

Well I can tell you a happy story. As you may know, Eddie came from friends of ours. Tim and Tracey, owners of Eddie's mom and dad, Chance & Casper. Anyways, Chance had a lump removed at age 7. It was cancer. Some small lumps came back over a few years and Tim and Tracey had them removed ( I think 2). Besides the 3 lumps being removed, there was no pain involved for Chance that they or the vet could see. In fact, Chance seemed to be in better shape than Eddie the last couple years! They had Chance put down last week, he was 14 years old!!!! He lived a long happy life.

Poor Sasha..

I totally agree that the last thing she needs is more surgery.

Love and attention is what she needs now and she is in the best place possible for that.

To have a mum with such a big heart - she is a very lucky girl.

You must have been devastated when you got the news Jacquie, I cannot imagine how you must be feeling right now - but knowing that you are doing all you can for her - what more could she ask for?

As long as she is not in pain the best thing you can do is spoil her rotten and give her all the love and attention she needs.

We are all thinking of you.

Big hugs from us all

Re: Sasha's return to the vet

Thank you everyone, What can I say?
Yes I'm hurting just now but for her, not me. I'm going to give her all the love and attention she deserves and needs. I was telling Lorraine that tonight as I was cleaning her wound that it was Blue that was crying. They have a really special bond.
I'll try to put a photo of her leg on here. Dont know if it will worrk. Thats the main problem just now, It's so sore. I picked up some painkillers from the vet this evening so hopefully she will sleep well.
I will let you all know how she is doing. Thank you all again, it really does help to know I can caome on here and let you know what's going on. She isn't just a dog! She's part of my family and you all understand that.

I sent it to you but I dont know if I sent it from my mcdonald_jacquie or boxerlass account. Hope you got it ok.

Sasha had a bad night last night. She was banging about with the collar for a large part of it. I ended up getting up with her at 3am. Then she was sick. She's asleep just now.

Hi Jacquie - so  sorry to hear your news but as everybody has said she could not be in a better home or with a better family and I am sure she knows that as well :roundnround:!!

Personally I think you have made the right decision regarding the op on her Jaw - their are too many down sides if she did have the op and as you rightly say I'm sure she will let you know if she cannot cope.

We are all routing for you and Sasha, Molly and Tash send big slobbery kisses :yummy: and Mair sends a big toddler hug and kiss. Wish we could do more to help other than offer support I think we could do with a magic wand at the moment as so many of us seem to be experiencing problems with our babies at the moment.

Take care and you know where we all are when you need to off load any problems or need some support.

Thank you so much!

She has left her leg alone but is quite down today. She seems to be quite sleepy. Mind you she didn't settle very well last night and was sick.
I think it could be going through her system, possibly a bit delayed shock.
I'll keep you all posted. Will get more details from the vet on Friday.

God what a bunch we are! All our babies are going through the wars just now!

This says it all, we took off Katies collar as she was so scared of it and Rosie was petrified. They hate the collars.

Healing thoughts go out to Sasha.

Nicki has put a picc of Sasha's leg in the art gallery.

It's looking a bit better today although she did have another restless night. It's the collar I'm sure, I feel really bad leaving it on but that's how she got a stich out (not wearing it) caught between a brick wall and a hard place.
Hopefully the vet will dress it or something tomorrow.

Re: Sasha's return to the vet

Last nights visit didn't go as well as I expected. Sasha's leg is still in a poor way, she only removed 2 stiched with 2 more to come out on Mon if it heals better. She got more painkillers and more antibiotics. The vet also dressed the wound as it isn't healing as well as she had hoped. I have to be realistic, she isn't young and older skin does take longer to heal so it's probably just normal.
Now she is concerned that the cancer has gone into her cheast. Were probably looking at another x ray to see if she's right but that was one of my concerns in the begining. Her breathing didn't seem to be normal. Sasha still has a long way to go, It may be a case of keeping her pain free for as long as possible.
I'm not getting her jaw removed, I feel that's just too much for her.
She is stil keeping us on our toes though. The dressing had to get re done last night (even with a collar on) and again this morning! It just keeps slipping down.
She is eating fine and runnung about with Blue. Whatever pain she was in before she certainly isn't in as much now, so that has to be a good thing! Dont know what else to say.
Thank you all for your support and I will keep you all up to date with her progress.

Re: Sasha's return to the vet

Hi Jacquie

Sorry that you didn't get the kind of news you were hoping for when you returned to the vets.

I certainly think you have made the right decision about her jaw - if it were a dog with a longer jaw i don't think it would be much of a problem - but as boxers have much shorter jaws (to give them their lovely soft squishy faces) - they don't really have a lot to spare anyway. Sasha has been through so much already - the best you can do for her is give her loads of love and attention and make her as happy as possible.

If she is running around with Blue then she can't be i a lot of pain - if any.

I hope things go okay on Monday - I am suprised your vet hasn't given you your own bed yet - you seem to be living there at the moment!!!

The vet has never had a boxer go through this op before. She has had a Lab and a collie, but as she said they didn't have short noses! I think were doing the right thing!

Re: Sasha's return to the vet

Well back to the vet again. She re dressed Sasha's leg and gave me extra dressings. She's back on Thursday. The vet is going to ask for her results to be faxed if she hasn't got them by tomorrow.
She thinks she will be advised to x ray her cheast, while she is under the anistetic they will re stich her leg. Poor wee lamb!
No news yet, but will keep you all posted.

Re: Sasha's return to the vet

We are unsure of Sasha's age, we think she may be about 6.
My vet thought she had the beginings of a cataract, but when she put dye in her eye she said that she had had an op to it. Yet another thing we didn't know about her!
We had details of a vet she had attended, but when my vet asked for records to be sent there was nothing on it exept that she had an eye infection about a year and a half before. That was the only time he had seen her. Before him there was nothing.
she was getting really depressed, I have taken off the "lamp" shade and she seems to be a bit brighter this morning. If her bandage comes off again (which it probably will because of where it is I can re dress it) She is stil on her antibiotics and pain killers.
The funny thing is though, when I was washing it with saline water she used to put her leg out for me :loveya:.
Well roll on Thursday so we know what were dealing with.
Sasha sends hugs to everyone. (((((())))):loveya:
