Took Polo for a walk today, hubby had planned it all out, across some moors, follow a wood, across to a pub & back to the car, Sounded lovely..............didn't quite work out like that :nonono:
Started off fine, apart from the path being quite rocky and difficult to walk on in places, never found the fork in the path which led to the pub - bit of a disappointment but not the end of the world. Kept going, through a farmyard and back up a hill, pretty uneven & boggy. Got to a certain point where the path seemed to have disappeared, hubby suggested I turn back (could still see the farm) and he would plough on to try to find the way back to the car. I wasn't keen at all on this suggestion, but agreed only if I took Polo with me. After Polo had nearly yanked my arm out of it's socket beacause his dad was going a different way, we set off back down the hill towards the farm. All seemed to be going well until we came across a small 'ravine', probably about three or four feet deep, which looked quite difficult to cross, I looked around and saw a place further along where it would be easier to cross (didn't remember this on the way up) Set off to the spot I'd seen only to find myself in the middle of a bog where I lost both my shoes as I sank halfway to my knees in sucking mud. By this time I was really scared & cursing hubby for all I was worth - army map-reading skills were being cursed. I managed to get across this bog and carried on, minus shoes, I was so glad Polo was with me & I hadn't gone back on my own. I carried on heading for the farm only to discover that I was on the wrong side of a deeper (about 3/4 metres deep). I tried to get down the banking, but the ground was so soft it was giving way beneath my feet. I managed to scramble back up, you can well imagine I was really panicking by this stage, but found a place further along where I could go down more safely and back up the other side. I finally reached the gate to the farm just as hubby arrived but I was shaking so much it took me ages to open the gate. I got to the car, handed the lead to my hubby, and burst into hysterical tears, I don't think I have ever been so scared in my life. What he thought would be an easier route back turned into a real nightmare - I've lived all my life in the country so can understand how city dwellers can get into trouble in unfamiliar surroundings. I think I'll be sticking to simpler walks for a while. :ohwell:

Good grief Linda!! Just goes to show how easy it is to become disorientated in the country doesnt it! Like you I am a country dweller and find it easier to get lost in a city than in the country, but I will definitely remember your story if anyone suggests a ramble!!
Hope you have managed to recover from your ordeal and that there was a stiff whisky waiting for you at home!! Glad Polo enjoyed it!! Karen ![]() |

Poor Linda! Reminds me of the time I took Rosie for a walk along the shore at the front of the house. She was only about 6 months. I was sure the tide was going out, ha ha. Had been walking a good while and came tgo a wise stretch of rocks, it was either clamber across them or go back. Im not sure footed so decided to go back, only it was a long way. As we walked the tide was coming in so my walk turned into a trot, Rosie was having a super time. I was nearly hysterical as well. All I could think of was the fact that my ill fated walk was going to drown my puppy!. We got back to a place where I could get back up onto the road by the skin of our teeth. I never ever went down onto that stretch of shore again........:
