Hi all,
Hope everyone is doing good, sorry havnt been around much had a few problems (hopefully all sorted now tho). Xena, Duke and Carrigan are all doing ok, we've had a few fights (i think they are still trying to work out whos the boss) Carrigan has settled in well, he's very protective and dont like new people, has been a bit snappy to some of my kids friends, also to some visitors we get. Not sure what to try to calm him down when people visit, he dont snap with everyone who visits, he gets on ok with my eldest sons friend, but then we get a regular visitor every week who he just barks at and if he had the chance would probably attack heheheeee, any suggestions would be a great help. Oh and im bored tonight so ill add some more pics to my photo bucket.

Glad to hear he is settling in ok, despite the few teething problems!
My advice would be the old gravel in a bottle trick. We use it on Sasha all the time and it works a treat. It has stopped her digging my lawn, jumping the fence, chasing the cats, jumping on my flower beds, jumping up at people (esp kids) and taught her to walk to heel!! Just get an old water bottle and 3/4 fill it with gravel. When Carrigan is doing something you dont like either drop the bottle near his feet or give it a good shake. Basically they dont like the noise, so they associate the bad behaviour with that horrible noise and think twice. It also means you dont have to shout at him and tell him off, which makes him more likely to come to you for comfort from the horrible noise and increase his bond and trust in you. Yesterday we had a house full of 13-14 year olds for my son's birthday party and I just kept the bottle to hand to keep all four of Sasha's feet on the ground! Nowadays, if she sees me reaching for the bottle, she'll stop what she is doing! I wouldnt say she is scared of it, as it has never done anything to hurt her, but she certainly doesnt like it. If Carrigan is really bad at snapping etc, the next couple of times he does it, drop the bottle near his feet (not AT him!!!!). That will show him what the bottle sounds like. Then have a bottle near your front door and have it in your hand whenever the door is opened, so you have it ready. As soon as he goes to snap or growl, shake it and he will stop to avoid the noise of the bottle!! Trust me, it works and it's a nice kind way to do it, as long as you never throw the bottle at him or hit him with it (not that you would, but I have heard of some people that do!!) All you want to do is make him wary of the noise and associate all bad behaviour with the bottle - you can use it for everything then! Good luck, Karen ![]() |

Now that is keen! Watched it today - excellent race! Was a sad day when Senna died, I didnt want GP for a whole year, couldnt bear not seeing him go round the track!!
Elaine, you can get Bachs from just about anywhere, I even saw some in Tesco today. Your local chemist will have it, Boots, Superdrug, Holland & Barrets - its everywhere. My daughter uses it so I have to know where I can get it! Karen ![]()

Will get some Bachs on wednesday (shopping day)
Thanks ![]() The bottle with gravel in is working great on Carrigan, im evil tho and got my sons friend to visit so we could test it on visitors heheheeee You'll be pleased to know he survived!!! He wore 3 pairs of trousers and 2 jackets (just incase) also rob stood inbetween him and Carrigan. It worked a treat ![]() Unfortunatly Duke tries to attack the bottle, once he hears the noise he barks like mad and tries to get the bottle (good job we dont need it for him). And last but not least Xena, What a laid back girl we've got, She totally ignores the bottle and the noise, shes too intrested in her squeaky hedgehog lol

He he good old Duke!
Glad to hear the bottle is working. The trick with it is not to over use it though - just a couple of short sharp shakes each time. I had a friend who when their dog was running away from them, shook the bottle at her to come back!! Of course, that kind of thing doesn't work - you can't use it to "correct" behaviour, just to stop something that they are doing at that precise time. We have a bottle by the front door as Sasha still gets a little over excited when guests arrive and has started jumping into their faces again. She was so wound up with a house full of teenagers on Friday that she managed to hit a 6ft guy square in the mouth - I was mortified! Good luck!

Bachs works wonderfully well, me and Mike took it everytime the Jake had a fit. (suspect it was the Brandy in it that did the trick!) Will try the bottle trick with Heskey, though not sure it will work while hes jumping on my head just as i nod off on the settee

He he he, can't imagine it helping in that situation!! You have to be one step ahead with them there!
My Mum & Dad were staying with us when my wee girl was in hospital and one morning the stair gate had been left open. My poor Dad said he was lying there all comfy and all of sudden something launched itself from the door and landed squarely on his stomach. Nothing like boxer love to get you going in the morning!! Hope Carrigan is still working well with the bottle Elaine?

Hi,
Well we brought some Bachs and it does seem to relax carrigan a bit, and the bottle trick is no longer working (suppose cos it sounds like biscutes being shook in a box). Carrigan is still very wary of strangers and tryes to dart at anyone who comes in the house who he dont know, im also having problems with one of my sons friends, hes only 10 and carrigan just does not like him how ever much he sees him, all carrigan tryes to do is bite him. So really anymore suggestions would be a great help.

I am not an expert on these matters by any means, but I do remember a few things our dog behavourlist told us when she came round to see Sasha when we were having probs with her.
It feels to me that Carrigan may feel he has to protect you perhaps and this could make him jumpy around people and situations he doesnt know? If this is the case, the best way is to make him understand that YOU are the boss and that he comes right down the pecking order. This then puts the responsibility on you to look after him and he should leave strangers alone knowing you will fix it. Its a very simple process. When you walk in or out of the house, put him behind you. Same for getting in the car etc. When he is eating make sure he knows YOU decide when he eats, perhaps even pretending to take food from his bowl? Like I said, I am no expert, but maybe this could help. With regard to your son's friend. Can I ask a really silly question - does he come in the house wearing a hoody, hat or baseball cap etc? My last girl hated hats and always went for people wearing them?? Another idea that may work - perhaps if you could get an old item of clothing from this boy and put it in Carrigan's bed? That would get him used to his scent and make him less of a threat/upset? Hope some of my ramblings help????!!!!

Elaine, have a look at this site which was previously posted on the forum - you may notice pics of a few of our babies on there - some good reading, particularly on the Links page.
I remember picking up some good tips from there, some of which Karen has mentioned. One particular one I remember was to take the stress from your dog by showing that you are the leader of your particular 'pack', one way you can do this is when you come home don't go to your dog first or even make eye contact, hang your coat up etc before going to the dog, showing them they are down the pecking order and don't need to worry about protecting you and your family. The Jan Fennell books make good reading too, I borrowed one from the library, 'A Dog's Best Friend' which told stories of dogs whose behaviour had been helped. ![]()

I think as the girls have said it is a protection/pecking order thing.
Another thing to look for is when your doorbell rings or knocker knocks. Make sure you go to the door first, the person greets you takes there time and then claps the dogs. It's not easy but it can be worked through. Give me a call if you want.

Hi,
My sons friend dosnt wear hoodies or a cap, hes only small (hes 10 but looks 5) we thought this might be the reason carrigan dont like him cos hes so small, but my other sons friend is nearly as tall as me and carrigan dont like him either. We are trying everything tho, it must be a lot for him to come into a new home which is a total mad house with kids appearing from everywhere all the time. One thing which is confusing us tho, Carrigan gets on great with Robs son who only visits everyother weekend but then the kids and people carrigan sees more often he just dont like. Maybe its to do with the people rather than carrigan. Saves us having a house full of kids too, well other than my 5 that is!!! lol Will keep you all updated and let you know if he ever manages to eat anyone hahahaaaaa

Are these friends scared of Carrigan? If yes, he will pick up on it and "bully" them.
Robs son obviously isnt afraid
