Our gorgeous granddaughter has arrived, well she is now 12wks old. She has had a few overnight stays and the area I need some advice on is how to have two almost 3yr old fem boxers in the same room. We tried it the last time with a barracade in from of lap on which Paige was sitting on, Molly and Sasha were able to have a good sniff and lick her toes, we also tried letting them in room when she was in little chair, they just wanted to lick her profusely, they are a little bit jealous to be expected as they have been out babies previously, Molly has also started this awful growl like groan as if she is speaking, daft I know, any hints and tips would be appreciated, most often than not they are behind a gate in their beds, safest place whilst Paige is still very young but moving forward I would like us all to be a happy little group together after all boxers have a great reputation with children I just don't know how to let this begin.

I swould veer on caution as they are not used to babies, let them in while you are all there for a short period of time, then out again with favourite treat - ie stuffed kong or chew/bone etc. I'd used baby gates too - there are others on here with more experience with dogs and children than I.

When my best friend had her baby Tyson did great. He was mostly just curious and wanted to sit next to her. If I held Brooke, Tyson would nudge the baby as if he didn't think I should hold her but after the first few visits he got very used to her. When my cousin's baby started coming around it was no big deal to him at all. He would just act annoyed when the baby cried.... if you love the baby I think they will too. Just be cautious at first and I believe you know your girls well enough to know how they feel about it! Best of luck!!!

I think caution i s good to start with - Boxer's are known to be good with children but after all they are still an animal and you have to be careful. My experience is only good. When my great neices come round Gixer is fanastic one is 4 he's known her since she was born and the other is 5 months. He is very gentle and caring (I know you are thinking is this the same dog!!!) his main problem is that he wants to like the baby - I think it's his way of letting her know he's looking after her. He gets a stern "no - leave" and when he does lots of praise and play with his favourite toys. As they only visit for a short time I haven't shut him out except when he was a puppy when the older one was a baby as he would get too hyper. NOw he doesn't need to be kept out. But if your granddaughter is there for a longer time a "time out" period for the dogs is a good idea. He's brilliant with the older one too she loves to play with him and he is just so gentle but she has a whale of a time. Get it right now and it will be klovely as she grows up. Gixer doesn't seem to bother if I hold babies but the groaning sound sounds like the noise Gixer makes makes when he is trying to get attention. Could it be described as "singing"/ whining? I find it best to ignore GIxer when he does this - I turn my back on him and when he stops he gets loads of praise. It seems to work. Hope at least some this helps. Congrats on your granddaughter!!!!

The noise Molly was making sounds like Sasha when she is talking - Chewbaca off Star Wars impression?
What about getting some blankets that the baby has been on (or by some cheap ones) and then once they are covered in the baby's smell you can let the dogs sleep on them and get used to the smell. Babies are very exciting, they kick their legs and wave their arms around and the boxers think this is just great. ![]() Try not to believe they are jealous, you are putting a human emotion on a dog and it probably does even feel that way. They will be curious etc, but they wont think they are being replaced as your "babies". Try and make sure the dogs are exhausted and calm before the baby comes round so they are less likely to get over excited and don't let them near her if they are wired as they can get over excited and accidents may happen. Try just leaving the baby (in a cot etc) on the table or something where they can't reach, but then they can just sniff around and get used to her sounds and movements. Eventually they will just learn to accept having her around and they will soon become firm friends. Boxers and babies are a great combination when dealt with properly !! Congratulations!! ![]() ![]()

Star Wars, that's it. I have been trying to think what Molly reminds me off when she starts. Anyway thanks for your advice, we were babysitting on Sat night and they definately are getting use to Paige being around, and we kept them out of their beds to wander around when my husband held her, problem with Molly is that she is still very much a jumper but I think as you suggested is getting them tired out before she visits would lead to them being calmer, you know what though staying here in Dunfermline I struggled on Sun morning when I was trying to think of anywhere where we could wheel a pram and let dogs off to run about at same time, poor girls lost and we took them out in the afternoon themselves when it got cooler, I will keep you posted on our next babysitting stint, would be grateful of some hints on how to post some pictures, of all my girls, I have them all saved in files.

Try opening up a photobucket account and then you just post the links. This forum doesn't have much room for attachments which makes it a little tricky to post photos.
Didn't realise you lived in Scotland? You will have to visit Boxer Welfare Scotland's site as well. Good luck with the babysitting!
